  • You know, as much as I love to look at Sanford & Son, that Youtube fragment that Guzzo posted takes a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG[/b] time to finish and prove its' point (c'mon, Guzzo, people wanna at least read the rest of the damn thread before you derail it with a ten-minute clip ), but having seen every S&S episode a thousand times, I know where its' going.

I will say this...there were quite a few episodes where Redd Foxx used the "n*****" word. Nick At Nite usually edits that word out (but it stays in when local television runs it)...

one of my favorite episodes cause it makes no apology for what its saying.

to sum it up I'm saying we're all acting like some sensitive bitches if one guys 2 minute breakdown gets this much outrage imagine how Redd Foxx's comedy would be interpreted by this same group if it was introduced to us today.

Jesus, you weren't challenging my beliefs at all; you were putting them down. Do you think the people on here are that stupid?

I never gave any opinion whatsoever on the death penalty. What I did was agree with the hypocrisy of people willing to extend forgiveness to a convicted murderer while raking me over the coals for wanting to do the same thing to a piece of shit racist.

Did I ever say Tookie deserved condemnation in place of forgiveness? No.
Did I ever say Tookie deserved to be put to death? No.

I'd start to worry about saving face if I were you. You aren't looking so good in this thread.

Dude....logic and facts don't play here.

You've been "outed" as a Republican AND a Christian within the last 24 hours.

    You're doomed.

  • Hey, remember the episode of Seinfeld where a subplot involved Kramer dating a black woman?

And the running gag through the whole ep was him using a sunlamp?

And by the time he went to meet his new girl's family, he was toasted brown (ala C. Thomas Howell in Soul Man)? Presumably so he could pass for black himself?

That scene was the first thing that came to mind when I found out about Michael "Kramer" Richard's tirade. This thread has now run about leventy-seven pages and I'm surprised no one brought that up.

All I know is that that particular episode is going to have a whole new meaning from now on. THAT'S what oughta be on Youtube right now, 'cause the irony is insane.

  • You've been "outed" as a Republican AND a Christian within the last 24 hours.

and we all know how prejudiced you Christian republicans are...

  • That was truly bizarre. I love Seinfeld, and I watch it everyday, but now, Im not so sure.
Who is going to watch Richards on seinfeld's spot on the letterman show in a few minutes? I think that is kind of a weird move for Seinfeld, btw.

Of course, this all looks terrible. the kneejerk, and probably right reaction should be disgust. But the clip Ive seen is out of context. Not that what richards said is excusable, but his whole stage persona was weird, man. He was holding his arm all limp. He was pacing back and forth, doing strange unnatracive things with his voice. Something was not right with him. As a pro with experience, you'd expect him to present a better front while on stage. Very bizarre.

  • the kneejerk

    official dance of the 'Strut.

No comparison. Redd's use of the word "nigger" in the courtroom scene was probably scripted and intentional. Michael Richards was babblin' off the top of his head.

Besides, at least Redd was a black man talking about other blacks[/b], so he was keeping it in the family. What's Richards' excuse? He's an honorary "brother?" (No, definitely not because he said "YOU'D be hanging upside down," not "WE'D be hanging upside down"...)

  • Although I find Richard's tyrade offensive, ignorant and bizarre..yes bizarre...all this talk of "hiding Seinfled boxsets like they're porn" and "not watching seinfeld" a little silly, if not hypocritical...anybody not listen to Ike Turner because he was a misogynist who physically beat women, or not listen to or oggle at old pics/movies/albums of Brigette Bardot now that she is a member of the French Nationalist Front?

in the particular clip I posted Redd Foxx talks a whole lotta shit about Mexicans too. Not to mention that he ripped into latino's a whole lot throughout the series.

the broad picture is that he used shock and racism in his act and it was accepted; it was not something that made the news. I'm not making a comparrison of their comedy abilities just saying that the overall PC attitude of many that chimed in during this thread shows just how oversensitive we've become

But the issue is not black and white. Oh wait.....yeah it is.

I get what you're saying, but I might really not be able to enjoy Seinfeld after seeing this. Im not sure yet, honestly. Comedy is about being funny, and its funny cause its all done in good fun. Richards was coming from a strange and dark place that breaks that trust. Its kind of like if you've ever had a girl cheat on you or something. Logically, you understand it and are even cool with it, but just thinking about it makes you nauseous.

With a lot of music, there is a certain amount of violence implied. i feel its different somehow.

...or is now BUTT-UGLY according to some reports?

  • anybody not listen to Ike Turner because he was a misogynist who physically beat women
I probably would if I saw a video of him beating a woman on stage in front of an audience.

  • why are people laughing? do they know what happened?

I was thinking back on some of those Montel oxbloods vs bowties shows. Or was that Ricky Lake? Anyways, I don't even remember those racist fucks saying anything as bad as, "If it was 1955, I'd go ahead and lynch you..."

  • Okay, that was one of the most real moments in the history of TV. Michael Richards was obviously not scripted, and I at least believed that he lost control of himself. But I don't know what I just saw. Was that contrition? Or was that a man who just had his celebrity revoked, who is about to be exiled? He is obviously stunned and reeling. He clearly suffers mental anguish. He said the words that he was sorry, but then tried to explain it, but in a way that he did not even believe what he was saying. And I also am not sure if this was part of a free association act. Notice at the end of his outburst, he almost mumbles, "Still those words." Was he trying at the end of the 170 seconds to make a Lenny Bruce point, turning some unintentional, improvisational pro-lynching racism into a statement about how all of us can't deal with race in America? And seriously, what does Katrina have to do with this? And how can he simultaneously regret that hate flows out of him and then say he's not a racist. But we don't really care about the condition of Kramer's soul or the purity of his heart. Our interest, as just a bunch of observers, is to draw a cultural line. I don't think that's a complete waste of time. So did Kramer suffer enough? Jerry's still down with him. I dunno.

This has to be one of the strangest threads I've ever seen on Soulstrut.

Guzzo had it right from the very beginning - dude fucked up. Shit was racist.

    DONE.

The fact that we managed to get Tookie insinuated in here was .

and how....When I woke up this morning how was I to know I would be fighting back feeling sorry for Jerry Seinfeld of all people....

Did the band play out with that hokey Seinfeld bass riff? I had to excuse myself while I had some dignity left, but that woulda been funny.

  • That was a very interesting TV moment on Letterman. Richards is in a really confused state. I'm not making excuses for him, but it really looked like he was possessed in that clip. He does do a lot of free association that is driven by anger and there has been real evidence that an actor's brain circuitry can actually change when playing a character with a mental problem of some sort. Watching it again, it was almost like Richards got stuck in some sort of mid gear shift zone. Almost an OCD stutter or something. It seemed compulsive.

On Letterman, he really seemed shocked and broken down. I believe he came from an honest and conflicted place on Letterman. It wasnt a slick PR thing, with lots of scripted PC terms thrown around and obligatory mea culpas. He was being open enough to admit that he deosnt know the en vogue term for African Americans. I dont know, while I do not deny that he was acting like a racist and probably harbors those feelings, part of me thinks that he just got stuck in this uncontrollable stutter. if you think about how an acor works in an improvisational free association setting, its not hard to see how a person might slip into a racist delirium. Like every one else, I am conflicted.

For what he said, fuck him; there is NO excuse for that. But, I ain't about to hang the man. He is human and flawed- no news flash there. Let's see where he goes from here, and let's try to rise above reveling in one man's humiliation and downfall.

    you sound very white

Maybe Michael Richards was the reason there were never any black folks in Seinfeld episodes.
