b,121A very wise TV executive once told me that the key to TV is projecting through the screen. It's one of the keys to the success of, say, a Bill O'Reilly, who comes through the screen and grabs you by the throat. Palin too projects through the screen like crazy. I'm sure I'm not the only male in America who, when Palin dropped her first wink, sat up a little straighter on the couch and said, "Hey, I think she just winked at me." And her smile. By the end, when she clearly knew she was doing well, it was so sparkling it was almost mesmerizing. It sent little starbursts through the screen and ricocheting around the living rooms of America.

b,121
b,121A lot has been made of this quote for some reason. I don't think people are looking at it from the right perspective. It's quite a lot more innocent than what the analysis has been. She's saying that teachers are rewarded in heaven because it's a selfless profession and that teachers are inherently blessed by virtue of doing good works. It's a typical religious thing to say. I don't think there was anything political about it.
b,121
b,121I hate the woman, but just sayin'.

b,121yes and no.
b,121
b,121I hear what you're saying but I nonetheless think it was a thoughtless thing to say. She was trying to come off religious/folksy/kind but in this particular case I think it was a fail.
b,121
b,121the reason people say that teachers' "reward is in heaven" is because it's pretty much universally accepted that teachers are underpaid, and that there is little we can do about it. so there's some consolation in the idea that teachers' work is appreciated at a higher level and they will get their due karmically in the end.
b,121
b,121the problem with Palin making this remark is that, as POTUS, you actually [i]can
/i1 do something about the pitifully low wages teachers receive. she and John McCain don't have to throw up their hands. the idea that low teacher pay is somehow inevitable is condascending when you're on a presidental ticket.

b,121Also implies that being a teacher is a thankless task, which I think many teachers would find insulting. If you are suited to it, it is a uniquely rewarding profession. My mother is a longtime teacher and she has a higher level of job satisfaction than anyone else I know.

b,121To be blunt, especially now that you've revealed that two of three are non-white, this just sounds more superstitious than paranoid... and frankly, disconnected from white folks.
b,121
b,121As RootlessCosmo mentioned somewhere else, people who think that white Obama supporters are racist and therefore will secretly vote for McCain don't understand the stealth with which racism operates in 2008. These white folks may well be racist in some way: they may not want black neighbors, may put their kids in homogeneous prep schools, may be scared to venture into mixed urban neighborhoods (let alone actual ghettos)...

/i1 to vote for Obama. It makes them feel a lot better about the elements of racism that still exist within them.
b,121
b,121There are plenty of reasons to oppose Obama that don't have to do with his race - and there are plenty of folks who will be open about not voting for a mixed-race candidate with a Muslim name without having to lie. The idea that there is a massive population of whites who will secretly vote for McCain after they've supported Obama to telephone pollsters (how much more anonymity do you need?) just has no basis in fact at all.
b,121
b,121As far as massive diebold voter fraud... again, as Onetet posted elsewhere, Americans might be ok with a little vote flubbing here and there... but anyone who thinks that the Republicans can pull off a massive vote heist - and have America just go along with it - and have it take place across numerous states hundreds of miles apart no less - is...

font class="post"1b,121b,121In 2000 there was of course vote fraud and tampering, as has been documented. But the Supreme Court decision was the factor that led to Bush being given his first term, and Gore accepted it. He rolled over "for the good of the country".b,121b,121Also, nobody ever talks about Democrat vote tampering, but it exists.

When someone mentioned something negative about Cheney they were confused. AS far as they were concerned Cheney has never been in the news, a quiet do little vp. b,121b,121Biden nailed Palin on powers of a vp question. Biden was all constitutional scholar and Palin was gee whiz it would be fun to have a lot of power. Same with the gay rights question, Biden was saying we will do this because the constitution demands it. Palin said some of my best friends like gay people. b,121b,121Speaking of vp power Palin is not just the candidate of the Republican base, she is also the oil companies representative on the team.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Doubtful. Highly. b,121b,121Obama's turnaround in the polls have far, far less to do with Palin and much more to do with the economy. Palin's incompetence no doubt helps - for moderate Republicans, they may be more likely to vote Obama or just sit this election out - but it's not like fear of a Palin presidency was going to convert most conventional Republicans to the Democratic side; see Quayle in '88. b,121b,121Palin's main importance has little to do with her public persona and everything to do with her private-made-political views on issues social conservatives are invested in. And therefore, it doesn't matter what her foreign policy experience is or if she can't competently handle a Couric interview. So long as she doesn't say, "you know what? I changed my mind - I think Roe Vs. Wade actually is good for America," she'll serve the main purpose she exists for - to prevent the conservative base from staying home on Nov. 4th.
I'm not talking about early voting in Ohio, which was a legislative decision I believe.b,121b,121Daley was a democrat. There are old political machines still in place that will produce for either party. Stated that cheney's idea that the VP is part of the legislative branch is a bizarre notion invented by cheney'(the article biden incorrectly cited as referring to the executive branch actually names the vp as the president of the senate and historically the vp has had no executive power, it is only in the last 70 years or so that the vp has been granted executive power by the sitting president).b,121b,121Palin's answers have been mocked here as being largely generalisations, and while her answer on this question was general, it was also far closer to the truth than biden's.
