  • If the first debate ended in a PUSH-Possible edge McCain, I feel this is PUSH-EDGE BIDEN.b,121b,121People noticed that she didn't answer the questions; my boss, who wrote in McCain in 2004, is apoplectic about her performance last night...

font class="post"1b,121b,121Yeah I couldn't believe she said that, and more surprisingly, Biden didn't react.

  • Biden was right not to react - let it turn up in stump speeches and commercials later.b,121b,121I think it was the 528 blog that said "that was just the sound of every schoolteacher in America pulling the lever for Obama."

  • Sorry I couldn't be here last night but I was too busy getting blitzed with my RenFair buddies. Homebrewed mead = killer hangover. Thank the gods for Ye Old TIVO and the local barber being able to bleed me with leeches.b,121b,121My verdict on the debate is, meh.b,121b,121Palin stopped the bleed from her disastrous interview with Couric. Tina Fey is going to have to work for this weeks SNL sketch. Biden put to the lie that he doesn't have the self discipline to control his mouth. A tie goes to the Obama/Biden campaign and I don't think that Gov. Palin achived a tie. b,121b,121The debate is fighting with huge job loss numbers and the House's likely passage of the $700 Billion bailout rescue (plus pork sweeteners) on the morning shows. Battleground tracking poll has Obama up +7. McCain pulled out of Michigan yesterday. Things are looking grim for the Maverick.b,121b,121Edit: Transposed Rasmussen with Battlegound which is at +3.b,121b,121BTW, my wife want's a "Bosniacs for O'Biden" button.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Biden was great as far as distancing himself from his 'wild card' reputation, he was poised, didn't fall into any obvious traps, and he let her own her statements. The people who will fall for overt Reagan references and all the 'gosh darn it' corniness are lost causes and always have been. Biden appealed to the idea that these clowns offer NOTHING different from what we have endured, and he did it forcefully.

font class="post"1b,121b,121The exact quote is:b,121b,121"You mentioned education and I'm glad you did. I know education you are passionate about with your wife being a teacher for 30 years, and god bless her. Her reward is in heaven, right?[/b] I say, too, with education, America needs to be putting a lot more focus on that and our schools have got to be really ramped up in terms of the funding that they are deserving."b,121b,121It makes my eye twitch when I read it, the mangled grammar is painful. Must go get bled by leeches again, my humors have become unaligned once more.

  • If you read it in a strong accent it gets funnier.b,121b,121But yeah, that's the quote.

  • Gwen Ifill was the worst moderator I have ever seen. How is it a debate if Palin is allowed to give stock answers to questions that weren't even asked of her....and get away with it????????b,121b,121The first time she did it (which I think came on the second question), Ifill asked her if she was going to respond, but from there on out, Palin got a free pass....no follow ups!b,121b,121Biden is a little bit of a wimp for not stepping in, after every evasive answer, and demanding that Palin actually participate in the debate, not recite her note-cards and canned speeches.

font class="post"1b,121b,121Because she was put on the defensive by the GOP this week, relating to her book? I don't blame her for not following-up on Palin's non-answers. The last thing I wanted was for Ifill to be the story today.

  • Dudes, she couldn't follow up - it was against the new rules that the McCain camp laid down for Palin, the equivalent of political training wheels.b,121b,121I understand wanting her to ask tougher questions (although that might have backfired) but she simply was not allowed to follow up. This was tightly scripted.b,121b,121It helps to know the rules before you go off bashing the moderator.

this bar in my neighborhood was insanely packed for the debate. they handed out snacks and palin word bingo cards. every time she said "maverick", "joe sixpack" or "hockey mom", the bar hissed. it was a satisfying experience.b,121b,121img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3170/2907930617_3fcc845086.jpg"1b,121b,121img src="http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-snc1/v351/95/61/836062210/n836062210_829400_9668.jpg"1b,121b,121img src="http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3233/2909225942_92d5e2a710.jpg"1

Re: Notecards, On the Israel question, you could clearly see that she didn't have that card at the ready and just improvised. b,121b,121b,121The way I see it as that, yeah, Palin did "not as bad as expected." If we had one of those surveys asked whether she "exceeded or met expectations," personally I'd circle a "3." b,121b,121But Obama-Biden is more or less solidified as a strong and, more importantly right now, STABLE ticket. Folks can feel comfortable getting with their brand. b,121b,121Obama is going to continue to be cool as a cucumber and McCain is going to get angry again in the debate on Tuesday.

font class="post"1b,121b,121b,121No. If Ifill asks Palin about last year's bankruptcy law, and she responds by saying - "hey, let me talk about energy", you cut her off, and say - No, bitch, that's not what I asked you.b,121b,121A moderator is supposed to "moderate", if all Ifill had to do was ask questions, she might as well have been on videotape. She didn't do her job. b,121b,121b,121b,121 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/155.gif" alt="" /1

  • smh... I know what a moderator is supposed to do. The McCain campaign insisted that the responses would be done in short statements and there would be no follow-up... even if the question was about capital gains and the answer was "Well, I believe that stars at night are just peep-holes into heaven."

  • white_teawhite_tea 3,262 Posts
McCain was wise to handcuff Ifill somewhat beforehand, criticizing her book on African American politicians. That likely was just enough to give her pause in taking a hardline on some of the non-answers. b,121b,121Still, every politician takes liberties with the questions; Palin was just stupid (or smart) enough to say that she didn't intend to answer.

  • I don't she connected with anyone outside of the people already excited by her candidacy. She didn't choke on her own tongue up there, but she didn't look smart. But she sure is spunky!! Also, she comes across as mean and condescending. Which is paradoxical, because to come across condescending you generally have to have a position to condescend from.b,121b,121I think Joe Biden exceeded expectations, in that he actually connected with people emotionally while exhibiting a command of the issues and not once speaking down to her. He was excellent.b,121b,121This wasn't a tie.

  • I seriously believe that if you had Tim Russert, Chris Matthews, or even a light weight like Katie Couric, the headlines today would solely be about Palin's ineptness, instead of this nonsense about her exceeding expectations. Shit, we know she can read from a teleprompter, is memorizing lines that much different....especially considering she didn't even know when the right time was to use them.b,121b,121 img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bucs.gif" alt="" /1
