I don't think you can compare the pirating of a television program, with a music release anyway. Everybody involved in The Wire is going to get paid the same, regardless of whether I d/l it, or wait till July to pay to watch it. And like Herm, I'll purchase the dvd so they'll get money from me anyway. It's not like cd sales, were internet sharing seriously effects sales and profits. This is one case in which old argument about providers not keeping up with the demands of the modern markets, rings true. If I could go on HBO's website a pay to d/l it I would. But they want you to watch more than just the Wire, so they won't let you do that.
I actually do turn down a lot of downloads. I can't say I've bought everything, but I can say that I've bought about 75% of what's on my Ipod (ie: the stuff I have kept past the first listen). I used to download shit and then go back and buy it all up, and have sealed CDs and unplayed promos and things. Recently I'm actually trying not to download shit at all. I have not listened to the new Freeway record, because I have not been in a place to buy it since it dropped. I have not downloaded it. I didn't hear the UGK record until I actually went out and bought it. Needless to say, I have only watched up to Episode 51 of The Wire. If I could stop downloading porn I'd be a golden god!
The only reason I deprive myself is because I prefer my take on a record when I hear it fresh, not one where I heard several iterations of it on a crappy mix. I seriously believe that I would not enjoy The Wire as much if I watched the new ones in just a day or two.
Even so if all I watched was The Wire, I would do the same as you. Like I said I'm not some booster for HBO. It is an enviable position to only watch one show on television! I watch sports, movies and shows on HBO, not to mention other channels. It is worth it to me.

It's funny, DK TV2 just started showing the Wire yesterday. Season 1, episode 1. Better late (way late) than never I guess. With all the hooplah about it on this board I decided to check it even though I don't like to get too much into TV series. It seemed OK. Might continue checking it.

Anybody out there catch The Wire: Odyssey? It's a documentary style recap of the first 4 seasons, lots of commentary by David Simon, critics, writers, and all the actors. Really well done. I peeped it on my Comcast Ondemand. Here's the dates it's showing:

no one is talking about how marlo is having chris get info on mcnulty and his old case. thats some serious drama right there. other than that, i thought the storyline about mcnulty's drinking, or maybe his acting, left a little to be desired.

I loved the episode. It was so nice to see all the characters back.
One thing though, I read that this season they're going to try to wrap up all the different story lines from the previous seasons. Knowing that I think I already figured out two things about how the season will progress. That's something I've never been able to do with a season of the show.
I have a guess as to how the B. Sun will tie in with the cops and drug dealers, and I also think I know what Marlo is up to vis a vis the other drug dealers.

hindsight...shouldnt even have said that. i havent seen any of the future episodes (2 tonight though!!!!!) and will patiently let things unfold.
anyone heard the rumors for next season's Wire/Sopranos crossover?
1) During Season 4 the major crimes unit sent out the subpeonas following the Barksdale money to various politicians. The Major Unit was able to hold onto 2 detectives to keep up the case against Mr. Sheeeeetttt Clay Davis. The Baltimore Sun just stumbled on a drug dealer giving $40,000 to the woman who I think is head of the City Council. That probably all comes together in something about city/political corruption.
2) Chris went to the courthouse where he got the picture of the Russian that worked with "The Greek" down at the docks in Season 2. He was in charge of bringing in the drugs from overseas and then giving it to Prop Joe who then splits it up amongst the various dealers in the city who are part of their co-op. Marlo is going to try to find the Greek and cut out Prop Joe and them so he can get right to the source and get rid of the middle man.

They do show Avon in the lock telling Marlo he's gotta go through him if he wants to get at the Greek. The cirminal record Chris finds is Serge from S2. Marlo's gonna try and cut out the coop and Avon's gonna get a piece of it somehow, or so it would seem.

Saw the S5 premiere last night - and I remembered why this has to be the best show on TV ever. Two things stuck out for me.
1. The way Simon and company bring characters and themes together in subtle and almost subliminal ways. For example: the scene where right after roaming the streets aimlessly at night when his sis is at work, Bubs comes back to her house and leaves early the next morning. Next thing you see is him selling the Baltimore Sun paper. He gets a 50 cent tip from a woman in a Benz. Guess who it is? The head of the City Council (forgetting her name) and she goes ballistic when she sees the front page story on her shady real estate deal with a well-known drug dealer. Amazing how everything comes together in that one brief scene: Bubs, the Baltimore Sun, the corruption of city politicians.
Another: Immediately after the scene where Lt. Daniels finds out how broke the police department is (no more investigation of the 'bodies in vacants' case, mo more take home cars, etc) you see Mike and Dukie at home with the wide-screen TV, video game system, etc etc. So who's getting paid in Baltimore? Surely not the police.
And another: The Baltimore Sun guys standing outside having a smoke and one says "I wonder what it's like to work in a real newspaper." Later in the episode when Major Crimes finds out about they're being reassigned due to funding cuts, McNulty says: "I wonder what it's like to work in a real police department." Budget cuts are a bitch.
2. The whole Clay Davis issue and the federal grand jury investigation. What's going on with the deal the fed was trying to make with Mayor Carcetti?? I didn't get that, any theories?
i think the davis case right now is being tried in a state grand jury rather than a federal one; hence the appearance of the fed in carcetti's office offering to take it federal.

Isn't the deal just that the Feds want Davis in Federal court and the City (Carcetti) already has a pending investigation on Davis? The Feds say they'll help out during the budget cutbacks if Carcetti will give Davis up to the Feds. Carcetti doesn't want to mess with Davis because somehow their money was connected in previous seasons I believe (it's getting a little hazy), but he has to do something to get help with crime while he's trying to pour money into the schools. That's why he decides to leave 2 detectives on the Davis case and everybody else gets sent back to their normal rotations. In the preview of ep 2, you can see Davis going apeshit about something, probably finding out that he's being indicted or something.
