harold melvin and the blue notes - you know how to make me feel so good
i think i play this like 10 times in a row each time i throw it on.

  • So it's not just stuff on CD's and/or the iTunes, right?

Well then...Bobby Marchan's "Get Down With It" 45 on Dial has been making several return trips to the turntable all week.

    NOW HOLD IT!

And when I say hold it, I mean HOLD IT!

    Snap yo' fingers..

  • charles "mr c.c." carlson - don't want to sit down

just picked this 45 up for the song she's not to blame but can't stop listening to the flipside, what a great record

I just listened to this 45 last week...twice.

But the most recent song I listened to on repeat was "All Over Again" by Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. I was driving down to Springfield for this conference and listening to the iPod on alphabetical all songs. When I got to All Over Again, I listened to it four or five times, singing along with an increasingly embarrassing amount of passion. It vaulted to the top of my list of songs that remind me of my wife and make me remember how glad I am to be married to her.

    Every time I see you,
Every time I see you, darlin,
    Every time I SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE YOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUUUU
    I FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALL in love
    All over again.

    XO Wife,
    JRoot

"Come Through" by Endle St. Cloud.

It starts off with melodramatic Snidely Whiplash piano rolling underneath a brief monologue delivered in this reedy, slightly jokey, hippie Paul Lynde voice:

"All right, Bunnetti--I've fronted the bread, I did everything you ask.

Is this another one of your super-heavy, super-duper deals?

    Bunnetti,
    WHEN WILL YOU COME THROUGH?!?!"

I haven't listened to the rest of the record recently enough to remember whether the whole scenario gets explained--it may be about some weed deal gone awry, or about some inside joke, or about nothing at all--but know this: Even if the whole thing is a put-on, the voice summoned in those last five words is as absolutely real as it gets; whatever it was about before, those last five words are about something else. To hear that kind of cartoonish hippie shit--"bread," "super-heavy," maaaaannn--mount so quickly into this incredibly real-seeming anger, this bone-weary frustration that just kinda explodes, is straight gut-punch, no matter how many times I hear it.

And the catharsis is made complete when the closing question mark and exclamation point take less than a second thereafter to contort into the left and right fists of this searing/smearing fuzz-guitar grind that stampedes away on double drums, gone in just over two minutes. Brutal.

    Not an average song.

    Swoon

  • "Get Ready" by Rare Earth.

Not the most obscure choice, I know, but it came up at random in my iPod shuffle rotation and hit me in the right place at the right time. Sounded so good I had to back it up at least ONCE before I moved on.

I've been playing the whole album two or three times a day for the past couple weeks, but I always repeat this one in particular a few times in a row.
