before they got in on the ground floor of disco with "free man," this chicago band waxed "shadows" for a local label called nickel...what i like about a lot of early 70s soul is that a lot of it sounded urgent and paranoid (and sometimes even angry), even when singing about a topic like love...along with "shadows," i'd say that war's "slippin' into darkness," the o'jays'"back stabbers" and cymande's "the message" would fit into this vein
This reminds me of my stay in france multiple years ago. I spent a lot of time in the record store, 12 inch, and one of the workers would always play this track. I definitely came home with that record.
