You can't put Funkadelic and the Isleys in ROCK.
I know they rocked out sometimes but they're funk/soul/r&b.
Basically do you think they referred to themselves as ROCK bands?
No.

Please stop with the nonsense.
Settle down, Francis. It's the internet.
Do you file Funkadelic records under SOUL/FUNK/R&B or ROCK at Academy?

Gotta give another vote to CCR. Love Hendrix or Tom Petty but consider them solo artists. The Dead belong in the discussion. GnR was the first band that came to mind. Always good to see ZZ Top getting some love. I even like their 80s stuff, the synths don't drown out those guitar solos. But that also could be nostalgia talking. Are CSN&Y too folky or Canadian?

CSN&Y? Didn't they only have one record together?
And besides I wonder if they would even call themselves a rock band.
GnR? No way jose. Only 3 records which mattered (really only one record lol). Not enough.
I'm as big a Ramones fan as you'll find.....started seeing them live before their 1st LP was released.....but there is NO question they had a bigger impact in the UK than they did in the States.
Funkadelic is the greatest underrated rock band of all time...how are you gonna fuk wit the "Super Stupid" riff?
I'm still voting for Van Halen as GOAT because of when they did it. I'm guessing it was easier to be a popular rock band in the late 60s and early 70s, because rock was the biggest thing in the world then. In the late 70s, it wasn't very cool to be a hard rock band, but they made it cool and changed the game. Eddie of course rewrote the guitar playing book, Dave created the best frontman the world had seen (save your Jim Dandy rants...Dave put a brain on it, made it infinitely better), Michael Anthony's harmonies were as tight as anything the Byrds and Beach Boys had done, the songs were pure hooks and the lyrics took Rock back to beginning...songs about chicks and good times...no message, no agenda. Best American Rock band.
One thing we can agree on(I think) the greatest era for rock(worldwide) had to be the first half of the 70s...the list of LPs you can compile is ridiculous, from the mainstream to the underground...just a few of my faves of the era:

Funkadelic can definitely be classed as rock, more so than funk, imo. Isleys, not so much.

I still say this is a funk band playing rock tho.
I have to respectfully disagree.
btw wow... this shit is so great.
Foo Fighters? Interesting choice.
I wouldn't say now, but when it's all said and done we will see where they stand.
listen to the "Maggot Brain" LP, that is a rock LP, one of the greatest rock LPs evar. A drummer in the pocket does not automatically make a band "funk".
what about this early version of Red Hot Momma?
Just the fact that there is debate whether they are Funk or Rock is something to think about.
I'm pretty sure there's never been a debate whether or not VH are a rock band.
Know what I mean?
Even we we do classify Funkadelic as ROCK, they weren't popular enough to be GOAT. I think popularity is a huge factor.
That said, Funkadelic is easily one of my favorite bands ever, more than just about any band discussed in this thread.

LOL
And no to VU, Stooges, Melvins.
I think mainstream appeal weighs in too much for GOAT unfortunately so these bands are out.

And that's why they're the best US rock'n'roll band.

Foo Fighters get an honarable mention.
I was never a huge fan until I saw the recent documentary on them.
To me, they have it all. Great songs, musicianship, stage show, unique approach to recording, AND they have paid their dues.

They weren't popular with whife folks, you mean.
Because in the hood in the mid-late 70s, the whole P-Funk empire may as well have been the black version of Kiss.
