hi! 10+ pages is a lot to read. i just wanted to say my sister bought me the amy winecheese cd and the chris daughtry cd for my bday last month. i like the amy winecheese!
Just to be clear, Bam Bam, I don't think *you* would like Winehose more if she were Black and 50 and drug addled on a boutique label... but that *some* would.
I know man. Shit, I actually went to rehab. I don't need to hear some drunk chick singing about it.
Wait, did Bam just diss Whitney?
Cold, man, cold.
Actually, it was an homage.
During the post-rehab era I used to call the local radio station, like real late a night, and request "I Wanna Dance with Somebody." I had an entire side of a cassette tape full of that one song, with varying degrees of static interference with the occasional "This one is going out to E**c" introduction from the deejay. It was my primitive repeat technique.
The other side of the tape had two Nuclear Assualt albums dubbed from my neighbor who sold acid.
Ahh, to be young and sexually ambiguous in the '80s!
It shouldn't be an either/or and respectfully, I find Bam's approach a touch didactic even though I heartily agree that backstory and character can help deepen appreciation far beyond what the music itself is capable of.
Didactic? No. Dude, you're the professional writer / professor. My approach to music is selfish. I've no interest in educating anyone. And what underlying intention can their be in a belief that satisfies only me? That is, I don't offer this as "a way of thinking about music" to anyone. Explicit or otherwise.
Further, I don't think what I've been saying is best summarized as backstory and character. Those things are important in further understanding the catalyst and necessity of music before it was expressed as such, but I am more interested in hearing past the sound to the intent. This is subjective, and can only be assessed individually.
The amount of caveats in this thread ("her first album wasn't really soul", "if you read this interview with her...", "she sound like a dockworker", "this is only her second album", "you need to hear her live", "hey, she's 20 and british, not 50 and black", et al.) remind me of those people that taste something disgusting and then instinctively say, "Here, try this." By offering suggestions of misunderstanding, or saying I'd like her if she were 50 and black and on a small label only make me think you just tasted something gross and are trying to get me to bite into it.
Long ago, I stepped in a big pile of shit. I know for certain, without re-experiencing it, that stepping is shit is no fun, and I don't want that stink stuck to the bottom of my foot again. This means that I am smart, not that I would somehow have a more enjoyable experience if I stepped in homeless shit, or bear shit, or anteater shit. To suggest that I would somehow expose myself to a panorama of potentially great experiences if I repeatedly stepped in shit is not my kind of adventure.
I've determined Amy Winehouse is shit. It sounds like others have determined the opposite. And it sounds like you have found her semi-shitty. This is the kernel, in my opinion.
What you are calling didactic is, to me, an understanding that I don't really have to settle for semi-shitty music. As long as Matt Bauer, Shoogie Dong, the Pop Group, Ramblin' Jack Elliott, Woodie Guthrie, John Cale, Dead Meadow, Zu, The Fall, Chrome, Swirlies, John Simon, Lavern Baker, Swans, Noah Creshevsky, William Basinski, Last of the Blacksmiths, Lee Dorsey, Allen Toussaint, Mingering Mike, Karen Dalton, Dolly Parton, UT, Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Pelt, Whitehouse, Crucifucks, Parliament, Gene Chandler, Debris, The Stooges, Discharge, Live Skull, Instant Girl, The Cunts, Charlie Smalls, Kenny Sargent, Gang of Four, Tom Brosseau, Tartit, Marissa Nadler, Bonfire Madigan, Clifford Coulter, James Brown, Rapeman, Shannon Wright, Archie Whitewater, The Downer Trio, Waxfire, Cranes, E-40, Joanna Newsom, MC Ant, Grails, The Coup, Asprin, Suicide, Songs:Ohia, King Tee, Express Rising, Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Purkurr Pillnikk, Joy Division, My Dad is Dead, Julius Lester, Palace, Amus Moore, Echo & the Bunnymen, Children of the Sun, Jesus Lizard, Fugazi, J Dilla, Tod Dockstader, Candi Staton, Amiri Baraka, Flipper, Mechanical Servants, Happy Go Licky, Kris Kristofferson, Unwound, Steven Jesse Bernstein, Joe Meek, The Whatnauts, Ruby Andrews, Curtis Mayfield, Take Three, Eugene Blacknell, Wire and the motherfucking THIS HEAT records are available to me, I've got a thousand other things to enjoy before I have to settle on sitting through a shitty Amy Winehouse record.
Like Whitney Houston, I decided long ago that I wasn't interested in shit that didn't move me.
Shitty is subjective. People state their preferences and I don't take it personally.
Hey you forgot Gustav Mahler, Sonia Sanchez, Hazel Dickens, Television (just Marquee Moon really), Bembeya Jazz National, Team Dresch, Big Daddy Kane, Built to Spill, The Ronettes, Sylvester, Otis Spann, Baby Gramps, the Muscle Shoals Band, KISS, Dead Presidents, Firehose, Prince Far I, Ciccone Youth, Smog, Gong, Haki Madhubuti, Gid Tanner and the Skillet Lickers, Dick Hell, Jimi Hendrix, Tangerine Dream, The Sonics, Negativland, Dr. J, Grandmaster Flash, Sam and Dave, Symphony Sid, T.Rex, Drunk at Abi's, Cat Stevens, Sahib Shihab, Pegboy, Tabu Ley Rochereau, Hi-Fives Band, Washington Phillips, George Jones, Phil Pratt, Ray Agee, Gobblehoof, Cookin' Bag, Etta Jones (not James dammit), Jacques Dutronc, Louvin Brothers, Big Black, The New York Dolls, Defunkt, Mercedes Sosa, Richard Pryor, Dean Martin, Hugh Mundell, Neutral Milk Hotel, Cold Water Flat, Willie Colon, Buck Clayton, Hazel, Napoleon Blownapart, Paul Newman's 60s output, the living theater, mid century Danish modern furniture, Brecht, the final scene of 'Being There', Buck Owens and Lee Elder.
Old girl sounds to me like she got her mind blown by Karen Dalton. She also seems to know that "soul music" currently has mass appeal to honkys with cash to blow. So she (or her manager) decided to simply combine the two. Winehouse = Style study = Par-for-the-course 21st century pop artist
This is some self-indulgent bullshit right here. Dante knows nothing of where her musical ideas come from. All reports are that she rights her own jams and she fired her management when the tried to put her in rehab. Take that shit to hipsterswhoaren'tlisteningordoingtheirresearch.com.
O,
So this is a torch song? Come now. Take that shit to DianaKrallsucks.com
These vids are pretty good. I can see why some people like her. The songs themselves are real good. I could see a torch (jazz) singer picking up on these. I agree that her voice lacks soul and sounds bored.
But some guy is saying GWCOAT. I listed a whole bunch of greater White chicks and that guy is still saying GWCOAT.
Not to ram this thread but on another note, Why are so many Brothers hung up White chicks anyway?? Recently, I asked a bisexual co worker of mine if she had ever dated any Black guys (or girls). She admited that she felt most Blacks were unattractive. Again I talking to this Italian guy who lived in complex and he told he the only "Attractive" Black women where ones with White in them (Go Figure!) And even though It ain't as bad a it used to be, I still can't believe some of the Monsters these Brothers have on there arms that they try to pass off as (White) women! Most Whites Chicks 1) Ain't check for Brothers 2) White girls Ain't Fuckin' with sistas.

How come nobody mentioned she will be doing the next james bond theme?
Amy Winehouse is set to sing the next James Bond theme tune.
The 'Rehab' singer could soon be following in the footsteps of legends like Dame Shirley Bassey, Gladys Knight and Tina Turner, after catching the attention of composer David Arnold.
Arnold, who composed the last three 007 theme songs, is so impressed with Amy's husky voice, he wants her to record the next Bond title track. advertisement
He told Britain's Daily Express newspaper, "Amy Winehouse did the best record of last year. I haven't asked her yet but I think she'd be good, although Bond songs can be a bit of a war zone.
"The next film will be in 2008 and we're almost finished with the script.
The books are all done now so this one is going to be an extension of what happens to Bond, continuing the story from 'Casino Royale'. We haven't a title yet but anything without death, dying, tomorrow or dies would be fine by me!"
Earlier this week, Amy, 23, won Song Of The Year at the MOJO Honours List for 'Rehab'. The award - her sixth this year - follows the chart-topping success of her second album, 'Back to Black' released last year.
p.s. just got finished playing this
I can see where he would want her voice for the next theme.
Maybe that shit got played on JACKFM or something, but I actually listen to corporate rock radio and never heard it once. Who thought that was a good idea? Was it supposed to be Cornell revamping himself as a neo-crooner or something?
UP NEXT: CHRIS CORNELL SINGS JOHNNY MERCER SONGBOOK
hahahhah, they said something like and i quote, "we wanted to find the right movie to inspire him" def a jump from madonna or sheryl crow doing others.
I saw her perform on MTV last night and she has a great voice!
Were you drinking a delicious Coca-Cola??? and wearing a sweeet Nike??? tee-shirt at the same time? Were you lounging in your Lay-Z-Boy??? recliner and eating a tasty McDonald's??? hamburger? Was this before or after you took a drive in your Chevrolet??? to your neighborhood Target???? Kid: take your poor marketing game elsewhere. You are embarassing the rest of Thug Nation 213.
Really:
Winehouse is a half-talented, half-alive, Ross-Make-uped rip-off (see below for proof). Is this what passes for a goddamn singer nowadays? Mavis Staples is still alive, you know.

Cold, man, cold.
she looks like eva longoria in this one
"I decided long ago...never to walk in anyone's shadow."
(Greatest Love of All)
She looks like she has that virus from Planet Terror.
She basically looks like Elvira from the Adam's family.
I dont think Elvira has anything to do w/ the Addams Fam.
Thats Morticia. She looks like a mix between the two.

And rob us of these gems of amateur sociology? Never that, son!
He did cite some persuasive sources.
never heard her music but... she looks like a cross between Sarah Silverman and the Wicked Witch in the wizard of oz to me
Well, that settles that question. What's next on the agenda?
