    It's easy to justify sacrificing a fraction of the population for "the greater good" when you're on the winning end. The more we give government the power to take away individuals' rights and attempt to artificially even society out, the likelier it'll be that you'll end up in the minority on the losing end someday. And that will suck for you.

    Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day but teach him how to fish and he'll eat forever.

    I just hope self-reliance, man'ing the fu*k up and a world of cause and effect with consequences comes back in style someday.

    Obama has not suggested limiting any rights, he has talked about returning rights that the previous administration took away.

    Not something Republicans talked about when leeches like George Bush lead the party.
    Bush never showed any self-reliance. He got people who wanted to influence his dad to invest in 2 different companies he was tied to, then ran those companies into the ground and walked away with the investors money.
    He then was asked to take a partnership in a baseball team so he could his political connection to force through TAXES to pay for a new stadium.
    He then traded on his dads name to become governor and president.
    He then, to use your language, fucked that up.

    Face it, the Republicans are a party of rich boys living off their parents money scheming of ways to get rich with out working.

    As for cause and effect.
    Americans are very aware of the effects of 14 years of Republican control of congress to go along with 8 years at the White House.
    Don't talk to me about cause and effect until you are ready to take some responsibility for the last 8 years.

    What I am trying to say is.
    Sorry I clowned you.
    If you would like to have a respectful conversation of about the limits of government - The negative sides of the stimulus - or why I would buy anything you or Jindal are selling, then come with some thought out coherent arguments.

I come on here with the intent of talking about records and the occasional "Best _____Restaraunt in _____ville." Sometimes I just can't help myself. Trying to champion the free market and the ideals in our constitution that the founding fathers held near and dear on Soulstrut is like promoting euthanasia in a nursing home. I understand that.

    Something I feel is important, though, is to stop referencing the last 8 years and Bush. I'm not a big fan of Bush either. I think he is a very poor representative of the traditional core values of Republicans. I also don't think the economic policies during his terms in office are representative of the free market. We haven't had a free market in this country in a loooooong time.

    Also, I'm not a Republican. I'm not sure what I am. I'm actually registered as a Democrat and have been for 10 years (since I turned 18) but I can't say I'm even close to being completely aligned with any party right now.

    Free Market is a great idea in theory.

    In practice it has always created an small owner class and a large repressed impoverished working class.

    Which is not a reason to reject an ideal.
    The ideal of communism, every one equal, every one pulling their own weight contributing to the common good, is also a nice ideal.

    It's just that for the last 8 years I have not heard the words fiscal responsibility and free market or individual rights from the right.
    Now it is all I hear.
    I'm not saying you are the right, just that you sounded like their new views.

    BTW, I don't talk about this stuff in real life much.
    I might do political work, and tell some jokes, but I don't sit around dissecting presidential speeches and the Rs weak arguments.

    Nor do I talk about records much.

    Cats
    Food
    Music
    Children
    are better topics for the real world.

  • Serious question - does the Constitution actually spell out (or even strongly hint at) what form of economy the country is supposed to operate under? Was wondering about this the other day, although I'm too lazy to look it up myself I guess. Socialism and communism did not exist when the Constitution was written, and the Wealth Of Nations was written in 1776 coincidentally. No taxation without representation is of course a cornerstone of the Constitution but this is a rather separate issue than free markets vs. state control.

  • I agree with a lot of that. There is no system that works perfectly but I will always opt for the one that offers more individual freedom and let's me make the decisions on what is best for me. I want the opportunity to succeed to an extent that is only limited by my own talents, motivation and hard work. I want to willingly help the less-fortunate through charity. I do not want the government to interfere and force me to do it their way. I don't believe they have that right.

    I don't always express myself eloquently (or even coherently sometimes). Writing is not one of the talents I was blessed with. If you or anyone else cares about what inspires me on these topics check this out:

    It's super low-budget and corny and the background music is horrendous but it comes very close to summing up what I believe. It's about an half-hour long but time well-spent in my opinion.

    It's not that long. 40 mins. of your life to see where some people that you love to fight with are coming from. It would be a classy gesture. If anyone watches it with an open mind and completely disagrees with it, you'll never hear another word from me on the topic.

    Well, as my dad used to say, wish in one hand and shit in the other and see which fills up faster.

    All of this speaks to the fact that you feel that you are entitled to success and could never possibly BE one of the unfortunates. What would you have unemployed mothers do? Not just the ones you probably find lazy and unkempt, but the ones whose husbands also lost their jobs because of the failure of the markets? Line them up at the local Catholic mission so you can decide how much to give them? At a certain point even the churches run out of charity (oh, and also have internal government that takes decisions out of your hands), and they don't have the capital or the structure to put people to work on a scale that is needed. This is the problem with being stuck in an ideal and NOT acknowledging reality. Everything in the statement above is soaked in self-absorbtion and about a third grade level understanding of how the world actually functions.

    There is not a THING in any stimulus bill that prevents/or ensures your success. That is up to you. If you are upset with this kind of government interference, you must be a joy to sit next to at the DMV.

    I love this time we're living in right now. Libertarians/Conservatives are completely flummoxed about what to do because the have a "don't do" ideology. Let individuals decide. Collectivism is bad (though I can never understand why they support a democracy in which 50.1% of those get to tell 49.9% of the other what to do. Sounds like collectivism to me).Keep government out of our hair. Government screws everything up, with you know, with like laws and stuff.

    Please Rick tells us what you think should be done right now to reinvigorate the corpse of our economy. We are waiting with baited breathe.

    The free market helped lead to the current economic crisis.

    Many banks and mortgage houses followed the incentives the market provided and operated in a largely unregulated field of packaging and then selling percentages of thousands of mortgages. When they sold all they had, they began lowering their rules and standards on giving home loans to bring in more to be bundled up and re-sell to large domestic and international investors. That led to millions of people that should've never gotten a loan, including 23 dead people in Ohio, getting one because the loan institutions weren't going to own them for long, but rather pass them off to larger institutions. The system collapsed upon itself when people started defaulting on their loans.

    The government then stepped in and stopped some majors from collapsing, but some others did, and a lot of smaller banks and mortgages houses across the country went under. You could've just let the market handle it and let them all collapse. In fact, take it one step further and have more of a free market and the government's insurance, the FDIC, could've been eliminated, and there's a good chance that your savings and all your family's and friends as well could've disappeared. Then we could've had that cave man, teach me how to fish and I'll live forever stuff, and you could tell us all again about how your ideas of the noble individual are what America should be based upon!

Also, I think the example set by Thomas Paine, the intellectual father of the Revolution who made many sacrifices...he could have been a rich rich man, but refused ALL money from the sales of "Common Sense" in order to have as many copies printed as possible and to have it read to those who couldnt read...there might not be a USA if he didnt do that. I dont want to hear anymore crying about the rich getting taxed more as "rights being taken away",please....

    Constitution does address commerce a little.

    It enshrines slavery as an economic model.
    The preamble suggests collectivism as much as free market:

    We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

    Section 8 oks taxes for the welfare of the collective whole and gives congress the right to regulate business. Congress is also in this section given the right to run a deficit.
    The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States;

    To borrow Money on the credit of the United States;

    To regulate Commerce with foreign Nations, and among the several States, and with the Indian Tribes;


    And for the conspiracy guys who say that our monetary system is illegal and has to be based on gold there is this.
    [congress shall have the power] To coin Money, regulate the Value thereof, and of foreign Coin, and fix the Standard of Weights and Measures;

    I don't see any other mentions of commerce in the constitution or bill of rights dealing with commerce.

    Except this one which is near and dear to all strutters:
    To promote the Progress of Science and useful Arts, by securing for limited Times to Authors and Inventors the exclusive Right to their respective Writings and Discoveries
