It's easy to justify sacrificing a fraction of the population for "the greater good" when you're on the winning end. The more we give government the power to take away individuals' rights and attempt to artificially even society out, the likelier it'll be that you'll end up in the minority on the losing end someday. And that will suck for you.

Free Market is a great idea in theory.
In practice it has always created an small owner class and a large repressed impoverished working class.
Which is not a reason to reject an ideal. The ideal of communism, every one equal, every one pulling their own weight contributing to the common good, is also a nice ideal.
It's just that for the last 8 years I have not heard the words fiscal responsibility and free market or individual rights from the right. Now it is all I hear. I'm not saying you are the right, just that you sounded like their new views.
BTW, I don't talk about this stuff in real life much. I might do political work, and tell some jokes, but I don't sit around dissecting presidential speeches and the Rs weak arguments.

Serious question - does the Constitution actually spell out (or even strongly hint at) what form of economy the country is supposed to operate under? Was wondering about this the other day, although I'm too lazy to look it up myself I guess. Socialism and communism did not exist when the Constitution was written, and the Wealth Of Nations was written in 1776 coincidentally. No taxation without representation is of course a cornerstone of the Constitution but this is a rather separate issue than free markets vs. state control.
I agree with a lot of that. There is no system that works perfectly but I will always opt for the one that offers more individual freedom and let's me make the decisions on what is best for me. I want the opportunity to succeed to an extent that is only limited by my own talents, motivation and hard work. I want to willingly help the less-fortunate through charity. Many banks and mortgage houses followed the incentives the market provided and operated in a largely unregulated field of packaging and then selling percentages of thousands of mortgages. When they sold all they had, they began lowering their rules and standards on giving home loans to bring in more to be bundled up and re-sell to large domestic and international investors. That led to millions of people that should've never gotten a loan, including 23 dead people in Ohio, getting one because the loan institutions weren't going to own them for long, but rather pass them off to larger institutions. The system collapsed upon itself when people started defaulting on their loans.
The government then stepped in and stopped some majors from collapsing, but some others did, and a lot of smaller banks and mortgages houses across the country went under. You could've just let the market handle it and let them all collapse. In fact, take it one step further and have more of a free market and the government's insurance, the FDIC, could've been eliminated, and there's a good chance that your savings and all your family's and friends as well could've disappeared. Then we could've had that cave man, teach me how to fish and I'll live forever stuff, and you could tell us all again about how your ideas of the noble individual are what America should be based upon!
