IMO Erick Sermon doesn't get the credit he deserves...especially when craftiness and innovation aren't always the primary factors to consider when judging a quality producer. Look at jam-ability alone and the Green Eyed Bandit has got to be ranked among the best to ever do it.

Sermon is probably top 20 for me. He had his own sound (pre dilla brought the zapp clap to rap) and he produced like 8 really dope albums damn near by himself. 90+ off of that list haven't done that. Obviously the EPMD shit is sick but I always go back to "Muddy Waters" for some reason. The beats on that record are not anything next level on the technical side but shit is just funky. That whole 93-95 era he was killing it.

I know he overutilizes Zapp and funk samples, but "Crossover" and Redman's "Time 4 Sum Akshun" are classic singles.
Underrated. Perhaps not a game-changer in terms of technique and sound, but he's quietly and consistently done good, and sometimes surprising, work down the years.

Being a bassline-oriented dude myself, I really appreciate how funky that album is. It's muddy (har!) in all the right ways.
