erick sermon is classic. he stayed classic too, w/ a lower profile. his shit on blackout to his one-off singles like 'music' and 'restless,' that epmd comeback album w/ 'da joint' was hot, to his tracks for boyz n da hood....
Absolutely. And cosignature on "So Whatcha Saying" being one of the greatest hip-hop beats ever. Personally, I don't put Erick in the top 10, but he's easily in the top 20.
IMO Erick Sermon doesn't get the credit he deserves...especially when craftiness and innovation aren't always the primary factors to consider when judging a quality producer. Look at jam-ability alone and the Green Eyed Bandit has got to be ranked among the best to ever do it.
It seems I agree with Harvey more and more these days.
No shit.
I fuckin love E Double, now i know im not as versed in HipHop as some of you heavyweights, but god damn Erick Sermon made some Frickin' classic beats.
no Jake One[/b] in the list of over 100 producers?
for shame
lol.
Sermon is probably top 20 for me. He had his own sound (pre dilla brought the zapp clap to rap) and he produced like 8 really dope albums damn near by himself. 90+ off of that list haven't done that. Obviously the EPMD shit is sick but I always go back to "Muddy Waters" for some reason. The beats on that record are not anything next level on the technical side but shit is just funky. That whole 93-95 era he was killing it.

While we're talking about Erick Sermon, i just want to mention his 12" 'Music' which used Marvin Gaye (unreleased master tapes if i remember right?)..... an incredible track, i need that 12" can anyone help me?
i was going to say the same thing dude has had a big influence on the producers that we know and love plus like jake said, he produced a gang of classic albums in that early to mid 90s era. i was feelin el nino as well. dude knows how to put together an entire album, not just two hot singles for the club or whatever. and he did bring the zapp clap to rap before dre and dilla

It's good to see Wyclef Jean finally being recognised as a superior producer to Da Beatminerz, Kanye, Just Blaze, The Beatnuts, Jay Dee, Large Professor, Diamon D..........
Edit: I see that Digital Dream Door's original list was based on the wishy washy criteria "innovation, popularity, creativity, and influence" so I guess that list makes slightly more sense if looked at on popularity alone. Still amusingly shit though.

in the pantheon of elite hip-hop producers?
Is the green-eyed bandit up there with the gods Primo and Pete Rock?
Or is he mediocre at best?
I know he overutilizes Zapp and funk samples, but "Crossover" and Redman's "Time 4 Sum Akshun" are classic singles.
Underrated. Perhaps not a game-changer in terms of technique and sound, but he's quietly and consistently done good, and sometimes surprising, work down the years.

so wait -- these actually represent an order of best to least good? man I thought this was just a stream of conciousness list of producers. if this really represents somebody's sober, reasoned list of producers from best to least good, then...fuck I don't even know where to begin with how wrong this is.

and epmd beats have aged real well
Superfluous question mark, 10 yard penalty.

EPMD and after.
How can you front on E?
always loved that line.

Being a bassline-oriented dude myself, I really appreciate how funky that album is. It's muddy (har!) in all the right ways.
He was responsible for a large quantity of EPMD beats and is no slouch himself.
i was going to say the same thing
dude has had a big influence on the producers that we know and love
plus like jake said, he produced a gang of classic albums in that early to mid 90s era. i was feelin el nino as well.

u are right tho, its an amazing amazing cut
Didn't Q-Tip do a lot of Tribes beats though?

I'm not a big hip hop specialist, they probably did a couple of nice beats during the 90s...
But what an awful trio if you think of the last ten years..
I feel bad for the 80 others behind.
Here's my top 5
1.Pete Rock
2.Eric Sermon
3.Rza
4.Muggs
5.Premo
