I say you get in where you fit in. If you want to make it as a dj you have to create your own lane and run with it. Remixes and "mash ups" are what's in today so if you can create your own and play them that's a plus. Same shit as djs 20 years ago mixing accappellas over beats. What about dr dre mixing "please mr postman" with Jive rhythm traxs "122 bpm"? Is that just as "bad" as HC is saying the rub guys are?

For some reason Archaic has some problem with them playing mash ups and not strictly hip-hop that he approves of. Maybe he's upset because the rub guys and Mel are all knowledgeable about Hip-hop and he feels that they're "watering it down" for their audience? NEWSFLASH: they never advertised their shows as being real schitt only rap. They are known for this type of mash up party and they do it better than almost anyone. Let them make a living and let the hipsters wear white belts and dance without your hate.

What "integrity" would that be, praytell? Nevertheless, I have to say, Robert, that when you resort to this kind of lowballing for shits and giggles, you come off as nothing more than The Enemy Of Fun. Me & my girl went to a Rub party last September when we were in NYC for her birthday weekend. We had a great time, and neither of us does coke. Maybe the crowd they draw in Austin says more about Austin than it does about Cos, Ayres, Eleven, etc.
Back in the mid-90's, I used to go to a night called the Sunday Social, which was held in the basement of an unremarkable North London boozer called the Albany. The resident DJs were the Chemical Brothers. They weren't much of a big deal back then; just a couple of guys playing lots of Frankie Cutlass and Mantronix records and hoping nobody would notice they weren't the real Dust Brothers, which they were still calling themselves at the time. For the three months or so that this night ran, it was possibly the best in London and amongst the best I've ever been to. The more popular it became, the more so-called hipsters it drew, and when it became too big for the venue (weekly lock-outs by six in the evening) and had to move elsewhere, the hipster quotient rose exponentially and it stopped being quite so much fun. Throughout all this, the one constant was how consistently entertaining the CBs were as DJs, which made the influx of trendchasers just about bearable. I eventually stopped going because I just didn't like the new venue, but I used to hear a lot of criticism, not of the DJ's, but of the new crowd they were drawing, the essence of which was that these people - carpetbaggers, one might call them - were having the "wrong kind of fun". This kind of criticism - no, let's call it what it is; snobbery - is as tiresome now as it was then.
