I know you would like to think that people dont actually like southern rap, but consider for a moment that it just might not be for you. Isnt it at least possible that its actually good music that you dont particularly care for, for one reason or another?

I don't doubt that one bit, B-sides. But, you have cats saying ridiculous stuff like Bone crushed B.I.G. on the mic, and so on. That is lunacy!!!! Such statements, to me anyway, show a lack of understanding of real MCin'. The same guys that think Lil' Wayne can rap relative to Saigon, or something. The issue is whether those same guys now jocking the South were doing so BEFORE it became popular. Will they remain down-South fans when the trend goes cold? Just a few years ago on here, those same guys didn't say shit about the South, now that music is "the shit"? It reaks of bandwagon-jumpin' to me, that's all. People can like what they like, just be true about it. I don't like it, never did, and never will. It just doesn't appeal to me. Same with my examples, I still don't like Jay-Z (all my boys think I'm nuts, too) regardless of his popularity.

do we have to like the same schitt our entire lives or else we're soft-serve tasti d-lite?

Bone ripped Biggie on "Notorious Thugs"

Biggie was like Shaq, huffin and puffin, tryin to keep up with rest of the team, down court. A for effort but kinda sloppy.
I dont see the arguement here. Money was way out his element with that one.
By that time Bone's deliveries had become even more polished compared the first EP.

    Oh yeah here's another................

Where do West Coast cats weigh in on this discussion? Those cats were jocked before, and now the public has shifted the attention to another region. Cant you see the cycle.

    Hey,

Quite honestly, I think Saigon is absolutely right!!!! Don't get me wrong, his blanket statement is not applicable to all "down south" artists, as he acknowledged himself by singling out Outkast and David Banner. But, rap music has definitely downplayed the role of "MCin'" in terms of mic skills, clever lyrics, and delivery. This probably explains why I don't feel down south stuff, in that it largely seems stupid and infantile to me.

Dude, you are an admitted fan of the Cella Dwellas...

That's right, and at least they have (or had) flows better than those simple-Simon southern flows that are predominate these days. Why does popular have to equal stupid or simplistic? I guess it just reflects the (general lack of) intellect of the American populace nowadays (check the latest ranking of nations educationally according to the National Assessment of Educational Progress).

I think what Mr. Rillz was pointing out was that just being complicated doesn't make something good...

True, but I'd prefer that over rhymes that are mind-numbingly simple.

    How about mind-numbingly boring?

stacks i was really hoping you'd address this question:

why do most new york rappers stumble over triplets if they're so complex?

    Hey Noz (and others),

I don't really understand the question because I find it untrue. I can name countless MCs that don't (or didn't): Das Efx, KRS-ONE, Pharoah Monche, Prince Po, Dres, Masta Ace (think "Take a Look Around" era), Jaz, Kool G. Rap, Redman, etc. But generally, the triplet rhyme pattern is sort of played out anyway, except for "down South" types or "pimp playa" MCs. Back then, when NYC had respect, cats from other areas picked up their styles after the fact (on some mimicry). Cats need to get their facts straight.

Honestly, I think (some) dudes are on the ole' dickride, "liking what is popular right now", wishy-washy vibe. They'll probably hate the down-South shit when it goes out of style. They'll jump on the bandwagon of the next trend, and the cycle will continue. Myself, if I don't like, I don't, no matter how popular it is. Like I've said before, I never liked Naughty (mad popular back then) because I thought Kay-Gee's beats were cartoony and Vinny was lame (Treach was straight, though). Same goes with Stetsa (wack rhymes), Pac (style-related), Jay-Z (style-related, subject matter), Lords of the Underground (never liked the MCs, but nice production, though), and so on. Not a bandwagon dude, it's

    Peace,

    Bitter and irrelevant?

Nicely put, Batmon. That's EXACTLY what I'm sayin'. Also, I'm not saying that cats tastes can't change, but shouldn't there be some consistency? How can one maintain some sense of identity when they flip-flop all over the place in terms of their preferences. So again, it seems that cats are jocking the South simply because it's "in style" right now. Some of these folks will hate on that shit when it goes out of style. I'm saying I never got into that aesthetic now or then. I'm consistent in what I prefer. If guys consistently got into that style, that's great. Stay loyal to what you like and rep it, but being wishy-washy is wack. Bitter and irrelevant? Nah, just true to myself Innovation should always be relevant to art. That's the problem, commercialism has trumped artistry.

Dipset is the only New York crew that's really doing it, IMO. D-Block's got some occasional schitt, and that's about it.

And please, nobody try to come up in here talking about Papoose.

Can I add that Dipset is "swagger jacking" the south on some of their tracks on top of that...

But I agree outta NY, not too much I'm checking for.

I wonder if folks called southern soul "simple simon" or stupid or whatever merely because it was less advanced or intellectual than its northern (nowigancasino) counterparts?

I think you guys are missing something.

And I don't like every (or even most) southern records.

I think southerners celebrate the idea that they are slower and simpler than "city folk". I'm not just referring to black rappers either. Personally, its not for me. I accidentally watched MTV for a few minutes and they were talking about "snap music". a whole genre dedicated to pressing the "snap" key instead of the "808 snare" key on the keyboard?!?! What is that.... D Sharp?

Obviously country bumpkins enjoy that stuff, and thats fine. I just wish there was something else on TV or the radio for the rest of us that got past 6th grade and don't consider an ice grill a "dental plan".

Yes, I hatt, but I hatt for the good of america! hooray!

damn dizzy, you sound pretty stupid right here.

  • God, Stacks, you are the one who sounds musically unsophisticated in this argument. Being unable to appreciate an entire region's worth of output is, simply put, ignorant. I brought up the comparison to soul music but nobody bit... either way though, can you imagine how silly someone might have sounded, in Detroit or Chicago, talking about how they can't feel Otis Redding or Latimore or whatever? Too slow?

It is all music, moreover it is all Black music, and I find something to appreciate in southern hip-hop that is not brought to the table by West Coast or East Coast. Similar to Jazz and Soul, each region has something to offer.

There are wack artists from every corner of the globe - The Cella Dwellas are wack as shit and so is D4L. They are wack in different ways, but they both suck. Now, if you're saying that folks like Scarface, Ludacris, The Clipse, David Banner, Underground Kingz, OutKast, Trick Daddy, Field Mob, and others aren't bringing anything creative to the table then I just would have to totally disagree. I would argue that you are biased, not listening, or somewhere in between.

I deal with plenty of old soul collectors who refuse to listen to any funk. They don't like it, they belittle anyone who collects it. That is what you all sound like. A bunch of people who are set in your ways, can't appreciate anything different, and take the worst example of a sub-genre to paint with the broadest brush possible. It's an argument with little if any intellectual merit and it speaks more poorly of the person using it than anything.
