i didnt read half this thread, but

    heres what im thinkin.

if they are genuinely into this whole diggin thing, then yeah, theyll stick with it, eventually learn more shit and in the long run, probably just be as much as a "real dude" or whatever as any of you (us? or am i lumped into this whole newbie thing too because im pretty young and have a genuine love/appreciation for good old music..), but if they lose interest and its just a phase for them, then whatever, no big deal, nobody's hurt by the whole situation.

really...who cares? you all know youre better than them anyway.

and their attitude? attitude? look who their role models are! haha, we aint the best bunch of guys in the universe in that department. the fact this thread even exists kinda replies to itself.

all i see when i read this is:

8th grader says "man, 5th graders are soooo gay!"

I wasn't hating on newbies in general. I repeat: I wasn't hating on newbies in general. I like to share. I like to meet people. I'm nice.

  • i remember one guy who came into the store with a 15 page list of super rares and was mad disppointed at me cause I was like nope sorry don't have

Haha I had a similar dude who was dissapointed because I only had one! It's like "Bob Azzam" "Intruders" so on and so forth... I'm like "I have this 24 Karat Black" and dude's like, "what about the rest?"

Trip is, he didn't even buy it. These dudes will buy $15 fusionjazzdoodoo and $6 VG- special, leave the Marvin Gaye (which they do not have), and walk around with a list worth a hundred grand.

    right on,

these punks need marvin gaye lets get it on.

Anyone remember the thread a while back where Kanye got clowned mercilessly for flossing this very record on the cover of "Scratch"? I do recall that much of the criticism was based on the $12.99 price tag ("How's he dropping thirteen bucks on a dollar bin record?"), but it was funny to be reminded of it in a thread discussing, amongst other things, attitudes towards the value (or otherwise) of music.

There are good points being made on either side of the argument, but it's undeniable that some younger cats display a "gimme gimme" approach to the dissemination of knowledge, and places like Soulstrut (and the net as a whole, for that matter) do indirectly bear a degree of responsibility for that. At the same time, older heads have surely benefitted as well - I know I have, and I've seen certified Big Dudes call upon the advice of the Soulstrut Brainbug before now. But I think that, if you're part of a generation for whom knowledge was acquired by an often long and expensive process of trial and error, you're usually more appreciative of other people's generosity when it comes to the sharing of their wisdom.

Whilst the key to all this probably lies in the different relationship that digital-age kids generally have to music compared to people of my age (over 40), some things never change or, at least, not by much. When I was a teenager first becoming fascinated by music and records above and beyond the stuff I heard every day, the kind of things that passed for rare and sought-after were usually Northern Soul joints, or 60's rock 45's like Marc Bolan's "The Wizard", Hawkwind's "Hurry Sundown" or "Granny Takes A Trip" by The Purple Gang. I didn't really know these records, but I did know they were rare and that people were prepared to pay decent money for them, so I'd scour market stalls of a weekend in the hope of finding them for pennies and maybe flogging them on for a profit. So it is now with some of the (justifiably?) obscure funk joints kids are sweating. And yet, I'm reminded of an old spot in South London I used to hit many years ago - a second-hand bookstore in Streatham with crate upon crate of old records that I relentlessly picked over two or three times a week in the hunt for boogie, disco, breakbeat raer or vintage jazz pieces. I don't think I ever did more than take a cursory flick through the three huge boxes (at least) full of library shit they had there, probably looking for something like "Action" by The Blackbyrds. Whilst it's generally agreed that a lot of library shit is exactly that, with the benefit of hindsight I dare say I'd have a completely different attitude if I happened upon a stash like that now. With knowledge comes wisdom and all that.

One impression I took from Grope's description of these cats he's encountered is that they seem to think they're privy to the kind of knowledge that only a handful of others have, and that this confers some sort of status upon the,. This is kinda stupid. Even if you take into account the fact that young 'uns will often act like they're the only ones up on this or that, its still apparent that, for every person getting salty about how the internet's fucked up the game, there's probably dozens more whose knowledge base, curiosity and judgement skills have increased one-hundredfold as a result. Then there's the "your secret shit ain't that secret" factor - if you're up on it, there's going to be plenty of others up on it as well, and the continued existence and apparent influence of Soulstrut is testament to that. But if you flex like you're the man because you're rockin' the e-crate equivalent of the treasure of the Pharaohs, then you're missing the point in more ways than one. By its very nature, an mp3 of a rare record can never possess the same cachet as the rare record itself, so how do the bragging rights work with something like that? V.I.C. and Finesse in Galt MacDermot's basement you ain't, mate. Amir's post suggests that some of them don't really grasp the concept of rarity. After all, if you could just walk into any spot, even specialist spots, and scoop all these raers for peanuts, then they'd hardly qualify as raers, would they? Besides, if you're all about flossing mp3s that you can theoretically get for nothing, then it wouldn't be wildly off-base to assume that you're not all about material posessions, right? So why expect to get o.g.'s on the cheap? The object itself has a different intrinsic value to the music contained on it, and it's not like every rare record is a great record, as has been pointed out elsewhere.

i was just concerned about some records being revealed, plus, i cared about stealing mp3s from other people/boards...
I hear you, I can understand that kids bragging about stuff they didn't earn themself or about stuff they don't actually own is somewhat
But I can't understand that you say you like to share music and knowledge and then you say you're concernd about some records being revealed. It sounds like it would hurt you or it would be a loss of some kind but in reality it is a great thing for the musicians who made the records, who I think would've liked to have as many people as possible expossed to their music (and have most of them actually buy their records .
For me the internet and mp3 was one of the greatest things that happend to me. It made it possible to listen and (with the knowledge of the existence of the record and what it sounds like) to buy really fucking great music. I'm not in a situation where I have access to many record stores ( just a few) and only a hand full of good fleamarktes to buy music. I know that I will never hear all the music I want to hear in my entire life and mp3s and the internet got me into a situation where I have a much greater selection than without it and have better means to know what I buy.

I just wanna say, I personally am not a huge fan of the "Let's Get It On" LP. Love Marvins voice, but I don't need that album that bad in my life, and I've heard the entire thing more than 5 times.

That said, newbies don't bother me one bit. Download all the mp3s you want, no sweat off my back.

I just wanted to add my $0.02 as someone who is really new to record collecting.

I've been collecting breaks for about 2 years now. I'm still going through exactly what grope was talking about, picking shitty records.

However, I really enjoy this stage. A lot. Because once in a while I pick up something that is really dope without ever hearing about it before. For example, I picked the McDonald and Guiles record on cover alone. Sure, it's not rare or anything, but picking that soley based on the cover and listening to it and hearing how awesome it was... you can't get that shit from jacking mp3's all the time.

And I think that feeling is somewhat important. Sometimes I like having no idea what I'm doing and just going to the record store, flea market, garage sale, or whatever and just listening. And then when you come homme with a stack of records and listen to them, you find the couple that were awesome, and the others that were garbage which you stick to your homies and tell them to go make beats.

Or how many of you have volunteered at radio stations just so you could listen to records? That's an awesome experience. I got to listen to a copy of Maceo and all the kings men at a radio station, same with baby huey. I even bought (for real cheap too!!!) a copy of headless hero's from a radio station (long live campus station executive dummies).

Lacking not only that dedication, but musical experience makes hommies miss out on the finer things. I hear you grope.

    this shit is hilarious

    it def is.

i could care less about newbies, if heat is on mp3 (i will download ANY music if it's good), or reynaldo bidding big on e bay. i've been collecting/ djing hardcore since '97, and have only bought 1 record on ebay. i try to dig every weekend when i can, and am not too concerned about dropping mad loot on records (because i can't). Every record i buy i play out, and the thrill for me is finding a gem for a good price. do i go to record shows? of course, but honestly i'd rather dig at a flea market or yard sale, or trade than bid on e bay.

that's just my small guy opinion.

this shit is hilarious though, and gets my vote for the best forum around. peace, pres.

Alright... finally got through this thread. I'm a supreme newbie myself and probably fall into a lot of folks bashings here so let me just say fuck off! Nah, just kidding

I do agree with a lot of what people said from a community standpoint, but there's some things said about selling to newbies that rubbed me the wrong way.

While I fully understand some of the concerns, I think being bitter about it is the wrong way to go. The times are changing and you can either roll with it and adapt or complain and be left behind. A lot of you guys with harsh words are professional sellers so my advice is to act that way. I may be a newbie to records, but I'm not a newbie to business and professionalism.

In order to succeed you need to adapt to your environment. The music industry is a perfect example. When people started downloading mp3's, the big companies took the bitter route and tried to sue everyone and their mother. Wrong approach!! The smart move was to reinvent the business plan to include the new phenomenon. Apple hit that nail right on the head and look at how well they did.

So you need to ask yourself if you care about your business or your ways. Methods are changing and collectors are changing. You don't like it? Well, tough... that's the way it's going to be. Adapt!

Some kid pops on Soulstrut, hears people talk about a super rare record and then comes into your store asking for it?... tell him you don't have it. They get bummed?... tell him you'll keep an eye out for it or show him something that's similar. They don't like it?... play another one. They cringe at prices?... play something cheaper. Act car salesman on them. They'll either eventually jump on something or leave at which point it's time to focus on the next customer. If they're a punk about it you just gotta deal with it. It's unfortunate, but it's part of sales.

Cool Chris is the master of that. Dude knows my sound and pulls stuff out that he thinks I would want. Most of the time, he's right. He doesn't snub at me when I don't know something, he plays it for me plain and simple and keeps at it until he makes his sale.

Being superior is part of your job, but being a snob isn't. You guys need to get over yourselves and do what it takes to sell your records. If you don't like the way things are then don't do it. End of story.

  • Yo Ferrari, I don't know if you were talking about me and Amir but I love customers like you! Dudes with open ears get nuff love around here. But seriously, a lot of these guys do not want to hear anything but whatever raer they just got hip to. I am all about playing shit for people, common and not-so. But a lot of folks just think if it's $12 it must suck and they stick to their list of Kusini, Malik, Placebo, etc etc etc.

"Are you the creator of Mary Worth? Because you are making me laugh. His proper name is eddie bocage, and, no, you may not buy it. What you can buy is this Boz Scaggs album. The seams are split and the break on "Low Down" skips, but it will fit right in with your collection of 100 Strings and Firestone Christmas albums."

I wasn't really directing that at anyone specific, just a general observation from the vibe I was getting from the post. Maybe my advice is a little biased because of the way I act as a customer

Basically, I totally agree with your concerns and I can definitely see how frustrating that may be, but I think it's important for all you guys' success to find creative ways to sell to this new type of customer.

    ABC - Always Be Closing!!!

This is a forum which can be a good place to vent, but at the same time it's also a public forum with a lot of newbies. I really just wanted to point out that these newbies are your customers so you might want to be careful how you talk about them.

And newbies like me... open your ears jackasses!!

well... for me - who grew up with all that internet and stuff - its still trial and error. iam digging trough a whole record store looking for what? for great music. not for cover-pictures of raers i've seen somewhere at a soulstruts mp3 threads. it maybe help, but as you said: even if its a raer... it doesnt mean its good music. for the mp3 vs. record issue: i love the idea of hearing an amazing piece of music, i'd have never known under usual circumstances by getting an mp3 of it. nearly as i like the idea of compilations or re-issues by funk45, stones throw and many others, which does not mean i'd not prefer having the original raer record or even have a friend of mine playing it for me...

i didnt get this whole thread anyway. after reading through all that posts it sounds to me like the 8th-grade-image a-ko mentionend. everyone started somewhere. today people start at funk45 (maybe only if they have totally no idea where to beginn. true.) and go to a recordstore with their funk45.com wantlist. however. maybe they'll go on learning, maybe they wont. having the names of some breaks and all that raers on mp3s isnt it. we all know that. so whats the deal?

for the record: iam 23, i own less than 2000 records but i do know who jimmy smith was. the last record i bought was that doldinger jubilee thingy and iam still learning.
