Nothing ground-breaking here, but I like the formulas.

I quite like Shlohmo and really like Nicholas Jaar so pleased that I like that remix. Think I prefer it to Shlohmo's original piece.

That Tim Reaper track is pure junglism. At first I was like, oh, it's just a well made pastiche of Jonny L's old stuff, but at about the halfway mark when he started throwing in the variations I got totally sold on it.

    Bosh.

Dark industrial sounding, but with enough going on that it stands up to home listening (well, for me anyway).

Finally got around to listening to that Actress album and have to say I'm taken aback. I wasn't a massive fan of Splazsh but this is something else entirely - really really good. Works best as a complete album from start to finish rather than on an individual track basis which is still a rare pleasure.

Speaking of reappraising previously dismissed UK artists. I'm rather liking Untold's new release. Synth warping sounds like something off a mid nineties Emotif release and feeling the overall take an old sound and make it fresher vibe. No idea what you'd call it, but sounds like techno to me:

I'd been meaning to get round to posting as much myself. It's a really good LP. Reminded of Aphex Twin's mellowed moments at times, but without neglecting the more soulful capabilities of techno.

There was a recent interview with him in the Guardian guide, he seems like an interesting chap, smokes a lot of weed, says a few odd things and was a promising football player until an injury a few years ago ended his career.

Excellent, will check that out thanks Okem. Wondering if I should go back and revisit Splazsh based on R.I.P. but pretty sure it wasn't on the same level regarding the subtlety of what he was creating. I'm finding it really interesting how a lot of these artists who were all thrown together under the Dubstep label a few years ago are now all branching out in different directions since, as you mention, this is definitely much more reminiscent of late nineties IDM/Techno.

Cheers for the link as well hugh, will check that out.

Don't let the Radiohead part put you off this:

    (Thriller = Actress)

Yeah this is also really nice (though not as good as the best bits of R.I.P.). I think I may have been approaching his music from entirely the wrong perspective.

So I was wondering if this was sampled from the beginning of J.Rocc's 2nd mix for Supreme. Not familiar with the og sample.

I too love the Actress album, what a stunning piece of work. Should be a new Lukid album coming on Werk this summer as well, i understand its excellent and diggeur-friendly.

what do people think of dean blount and inga copeland - black is beautiful?

I don't listen to music made by people who use their real names. They have to have some kind of superhero alter-ego for me to take them seriously. And a blanket.

(I jest, but as I'm into 'producer' music, the artists usually don't use their real names - checking now and it sounds quite interesting)

I kind of like it? I haven't really given it a proper listen through yet though so not sure if it will come together more as a complete sound on repeat. Disclaimer that I'm not really familiar with his previous work. Was kind of hoping that the song he stuck on Narcissist II would be in there somewhere though.

    This one?

I'm a fan. To begin with, I couldn't quite figure Hype Williams, I remember a while back someone claiming it was an art project with the production responsibilities being passed from producer to producer. lols. But I like the mystique that comes from their music being hard to grasp.

I like this weird new rnb ish. Much better than that fake The Weekend bollocks.

Yeah that's the one, all kinds of awesome.

So should I be checking Hype Williams stuff as well then? Any recommendations on where to start?

Dean Blunt and Inga Copeland = Hype Williams. (cause they heard duder would only listen to them under a pseudonym. although I don't think Dean & Inga are their real names either)

Narcicist II is one the more accessible things they've done to date, but if you like the Ebony release their back catalog is more along those lines. Not that I've heard half of it, there's tonns of releases out there; cdrs, self releases, mp3 leaks, tumblr mixes, small pressed 12s. If you follow the link on their youtube videos it takes you to their bigcartel site with a couple of long sold out releases. The Guardian dropped a folder of their unfinished / unreleased tracks recently, but the download is now dead.

I'd start at One Nation, their lp from last year, then the Untitled debut on Carnivals.

There's also a few solo releases

Clams Casino in teh mix for Benji B.

  • JuniorJunior 4,853 Posts
Thanks Okem. Yeah, sorry, did know they were Hype Williams but wasn't sure how similar it was to the Ebony album or whether their name change was more because they can rather than symbolic of a different style.

Just read the Guardian interview which amused me in parts the cheeky scamps. Will track down One Nation and work from there.

Cheers Duder, interesting to see Clams playing SpaceGhost but guess it makes sense within the internet relationship charts.

I thought I read on his twitter that it was going to be unreleased instrumentals, a kind of evolution of Clams Casino.

I'm guessing there can't be two, and this is the a different link to the same thing - http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/p00rjrtp

Been reading about Laurel Halo for some time now but not really been that amazed by anything I've heard until finally picked up the Spring EP. This is pleasing me no end at the moment.

I remember hearing them do a live version of this a while back, looks like it's official now. Jesse Ware continues to please, but I kinda miss Sampha'a voice from this version.
