I thought it was hot sauce, but you bring up some valid points. I don't know Powell's state of mind. I think he probably thinks Obama really is the best candidate. But my experience, having covered Powell for four years and been in his press pool, is that he does everything for political reasons. Notice the day after the endorsement, Obama said he would seek Powell's advice and would have to talk to him if he wanted anything in the administration. Influence is the coin of Washington. To be able to tell future clients, to trade favors on, the fact that the next president says he will seek your counsel is in and of itself very valuable. The other point is that Powell, in part for honest reasons, has opposed Bush and the Republican party since at least 2003. Now Powell owes a lot to Republicans for his career. Reagan made him chairman of the joint chiefs, Bush made him his national security advisor. Powell is a brilliant guy and would have been an asset to any president. But he has also always played his own game. He was the prototype of the political general. Remember Powell directly opposed Clinton on the original bosnia intervention and sabotaged his pledge to allow gays in the military. He has been a better friend to Democrats since becoming secretary of state. But he never delivered a full throated critique of the war, instead he allowed his former underlings to do it for him. That's what I was driving at. b,121b,121One more thing. I don't repeat talking points. More often than not, my pieces end up becoming the talking points.
