b,121b,121R, I believe Obama made a slip there, I heard it too. He went back to $250,000 later in the debate (where he said "quarter of a million"). I would only worry if he starts saying it on the stump in the next week.

`Joe the Plumber,' Obama Tax-Plan Critic, Owes Taxes (Update1) b,121b,121By Ryan J. Donmoyerb,121b,121Oct. 16 (Bloomberg) -- ``Joe the plumber,'' the Toledo, Ohio, man whose complaints about Barack Obama's tax plan were highlighted by John McCain in the final presidential debate, owes the state of Ohio almost $1,200 in back income taxes. b,121b,121According to records on file with the Lucas County Court of Common Pleas, the state filed a tax lien against Samuel J. Wurzelbacher for $1,182.98 on Jan. 26, 2007, that is still active.

b,121b,121Well, at least he's consistent in not liking taxes.

b,121b,121b,121Awesome. Sounds like he needs to siphon off some of that long ca$h money he was going to use to buy the quarter-milli-a-year company so he can settle up with Uncle Sam. b,121b,121That ain't nothin' to a baller, baby!

A San Bernardino County Republican group has distributed a newsletter picturing Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama on a $10 bill adorned with a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken.b,121b,121Linking Obama to demeaning racist stereotypes drew denunciations from various GOP officials after the illustration appeared in the October newsletter of the Chaffey Community Republican Women, Federated, the Riverside Press-Enterprise reported Thursday.b,121b,121Diane Fedele, president of the group, said she had no racist intent.b,121b,121"I never connected," she told the newspaper. "It was just food to me. It didn't mean anything else."/b1b,121b,121The Obama campaign declined to comment, saying it does not address such attacks.b,121b,121The newsletter was sent to about 200 club members and associates last week by mail and e-mail. The club is a volunteer group that is not directly responsible to the state party, said California Republican Party press secretary Hector Barajas, who denounced the newsletter.b,121b,121Fedele said she had received the illustration in e-mails and decided to reprint it to poke fun at a remark by Obama that he doesn't look like other presidents.b,121b,121"It was strictly an attempt to point out the outrageousness of his statement. I really don't want to go into it any further," Fedele told the newspaper. "I absolutely apologize to anyone who was offended. That clearly wasn't my attempt."b,121b,121Sheila Raines of San Bernardino, a black member of the club, complained about the image to Fedele.b,121b,121"This is what keeps African-Americans from joining the Republican Party," she said. Quote:/font1h,121b,121I thought it was McCain's best performance, but it doesn't matter. There is a global financial clusterfuck. Democrats will control all branches of government and Republicans will be weakened in a way the party has not known since Roosevelt's election in 1932.b,121b,121h,121
b,121I agree it was McCain's best performance, but it doesn't matter. b,121b,121As to the Ds controlling all branches of government? It will take decades before judges nominated by Ds will be in the majority. Couple that with the fact that the Rs have nominated some of the most ideologically radical judges to ever serve. Rs will control the Judiciary for decades and decades. b,121b,121I doubt if the Ds hold large majorities in both houses past 2010. b,121b,121/font1Quote:/font1h,121b,121 I found it bizarre that Joe the Plumber seemed to dominate the debate and that the candidates awkwardly addressed him personally. I was trying to imagine what it would be like if two candidates addressed me directly in a debate. I am pleased that Obama is at least choosing to campaign as center-right now on nearly all things--he will cut your taxes, he wants a line item veto, he likes charter schools and firing public school teachers, clean coal technology, more dirty war in Pakistan, keeping troops in Iraq etc... I hope hope hope he is not a surreptitious radical, saying all these things because his true agenda would render him unelectable. I suppose I think he means it. And I am pleased a black man will be president. And McCain saying that ACORN's fraudulence is the greatest electoral crime in US history is bizarre, what about the 1960 election when Joe Kennedy purchased whole counties in West Virginia and Mayor Daley delivered Chicago to Kennedy? b,121b,121h,121b,121b,121Delivering Chicago helped increase Daley's power, but seriously, Chicago had always voted for the Ds and given Chitowns large Catholic population I think you would have a hard time arguing that he did little more than get out the vote. The story, minus the Catholics, is much the same in WV and Texas. Just because corrupt people threw money around doesn't mean that the vote would have gone another way. b,121b,121Still, at least Kennedy was elected. That is more than you can say for GW.

b,121b,121b,121That's what I heard. b,121b,121h,121b,121b,121obviously he meant Alito, but it was funny nonetheless. Obama couldn't exactly come back with "I wasn't even in the Senate when Breyer was nominated" as that would only give McCain an opening to claim inexperience! b,121b,121h,121b,121b,121At least Obama gave a straight answer to the question, unlike McCain.

I doubt those posters are endorsed by the campaign. Independent groups do some suspect things in elections, but I doubt very much the McCain campaign is down with all that. 527s? Yes. McCain himself? No.
Why I am going to vote for McCain:b,1211) He opposes an ethanol subsidy.b,1212) He has seriously fought to cut government waste.b,1213) He was one of the few senators of any party to vigorously object to torture. b,1214) PSYCH!b,121b,121He is pathetically self destructing. He is doing it with a lot less dignity than Bob Dole did. b,121b,121And he really did have his best performance. He got of the only really good zinger of the 4 debates. He was forceful in his attacks. He looked healthy. b,121b,121But he had no command of the issues. Obama wisely got out of his way during the education section and just let McCain make a fool of himself. b,121b,121Same with fair trade. I'm sure I heard him say that Columbia is America's #1 importer of Agricultural goods. I don't believe that for a second. And Columbia is our best ally in the war on drugs. Does he really think that Americans don't know that Columbia is a corrupt drug exporting country. b,121b,121On fair trade McCain said that we need to import more ethanol from Brazil. Obama said we need to export more cars to South Korea. b,121b,121We know that McCain did not prepare for the first debate, and may have thought he could wing the town hall style. But supposedly he prepared for this debate, knew it was going to be about domestic issues, and all he's got is America needs to open it's doors to more foreign imports and teachers shouldn't be certified?b,121b,121Pathetic. b,121b,121Folks it is not over. Ayers is just the warm up. Obama is just as closely connected to Farakkan as he is to Ayers, and more closely connected to Wright. We will be hearing about that a lot in 2 weeks. We can also expect the war on terror to dominate the news the last week of October or first few days of Nov. I don't know if any of that can help McCain at this point, but it wont help Obama.

I'm not saying more negative campaigning isn't possible - desperation makes people do dumb shit (i.e. see the last 30 days) - but I think McCain is also weighing what the future of his reputation is going to be. Honestly, the Rev. Wright card is pretty easy to play and he's avoided it precisely because he doesn't want to give comments like John Lewis' even more play. People might think McCain is the devil or what have you, but he hasn't wholeheartedly embraced this negative shit; he really hasn't relative to previous campaigns. I don't know if it's because he thinks the political calculus doesn't add up or if it offends his integrity but either way, he's still hedging and I think will continue to.

b,121b,121b,121You forgot one thing and it's a major issue with umm, one half of the American population (women). McCain's mocking of the pro-choice movement (or as he calls it "the pro-abortion movement") and his use of air quotations when referencing women's "health" issues were UGLY and NAGL x 10000000.
You might very well be right but at some point, McCain is going to have to see the reality for what it is and make a calculated decision as to how he wants to be remembered. Maybe he'll choose the route of slash and burn but I think there will be those around him who would caution that the only thing he'll destroy is his own reputation. Did he really come this far to waste all that? b,121b,121It seems more likely to me that McCain will pull a Hillary and try to reinvent himself as a populist. I'm surprised he hasn't already done that but maybe he's afraid of losing the GOP base.

b,121b,121That was my prediction for last night. But it didn't happen. b,121b,121How about this. Why should we fight and call each other names, and have these silly elections? What do they prove anyway? They are just popularity contests.

One interesting side point. One way we know the Republicans are preparing for the worst is that they are raising the ACORN stuff now. The party that screams about electoral fraud is almost always the loser. The truth is that both sides cheat in every election. Democrats try to add voters to the rolls, at times by registering imaginary people, dead people, felons. Republicans try to turn away voters through misinformation to disenfranchised communities. The Democrats for much of the 20th century, of course in the south, were the white supremacist party and supported apartheid voting laws and vigilante race terrorism, so they too used to turn away voters. But since 1960, this is usually how it is. The party that brings it up first, like Dems in 2004 and Republicans this year, is usually doing so because they know they are going to lose.
b1Wave Of McCain Robocalls Reported, Some May Violate State Law/b1b,121b,121img src="http://i2.cdn.turner.com/cnn/2008/images/07/15/art.mccain.phone.jpg"1b,121b,121October 16, 4:37 p.m.b,121b,121The McCain-Palin campaign and the Republican National Committee launched a massive robocall campaign on Thursday designed to alarm voters about Barack Obama's past association with former radical Bill Ayers. The committee may be violating state law in the process.b,121b,121The call begins: "Hello. I'm calling for John McCain and the RNC," before telling recipients that they "need to know that Barack Obama has worked closely with domestic terrorist, Bill Ayers, whose organization bombed the U.S. Capitol, the Pentagon, a judge's home, and killed Americans."b,121b,121More remarkable than the message (coming after a presidential debate in which John McCain said he didn't care about a "washed up terrorist") is the reach of the campaign itself. The Huffington Post received dozens of emails from voters who had either received the call or gotten a voice mail with a recording. Reports came from Ohio, Colorado, New Mexico, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Missouri, North Carolina, Florida, Texas, West Virginia, Maine and even Georgia. b,121b,121b,121(read more at The Huffington Post)
