trill and chinese new year are some of the best tracks released in the past years
For real? I think 'trill' is one of the weakest tracks.
beat is crazy and whoever is on the first verse (im a huge clipse and i dont even know who is who) fucking destroys that shit. yes, i think they should have called the track something else or if they really felt the need to call it that at least get some mufuckah from houston on that shit, but all in all i luuuuuv that track
Pharrell's drumwork references alot of 80's hip hop joints, the Biz Markie snare fill on Mr. Me Too is one that comes to mind f.ex. That mentality would also explain the lack of modern basslines. Back to the drums, sparse samples & rhyming. That's completely fine with me.
This shit is good. Period.
@ Herm.
They're basically talking about selling drugs, moving drugs, cooking drugs, some more drugs. But there is also some insight provided. They talk about their feelings a bit, paranoia, remorse (kinda), etc...
And they do it well. Now I'm not a big cheerleader of crack, coke, meth, etc... but that's my reality. This is theirs.
I can understand you wanting rappers SAYING some shit. I'd rather hear them talk about what they know though, instead of trying to be some Frans de Waal-thinking duo of boom bap.
If you can't get with the drum programming on "Hello New World", complete with the tiny silences between each hit, then you are officialy not into good drums.

So spastic, so good.
What are you blabbering on about? I mean, that beat is real nice, but still, the actual drum programming is pretty standard, just with a little purposely offbeat thing going on... nothing to get a boner about...

Since when did a good rap release have to SAY something?
These dudes SAY a lot more (oftentimes, without actually SAYING it) than most rappers in 2006.
But at the same time a lot of the hate of the hip hop that doesn't make the elite list of acts that are worshipped on here get their lyrics dissected and clowned as examples of how terrible they are...
B*n, I know we're related and all but I call bullshit! This album sounds dope to me! Plus Lil Wayne has been sounding really nice to me lately and I used to be a hatteur, I'll admit, peep Dedication 2 lil bro, maybe I'll bring that shit up for you.
the line about pyrex pots creating tightwads like they're Jewish. that line doesn't even make much sense.
get it? tight wads?
does this line really need more-in-carmen style exposition?
right, but listen to the line again. it's like the pyrex pots produce tightwads (of crack presumably), and so they (the pyrex pots) are Jewish. it's just a whack rap lyric. the idea is there, but they fail. much like this album.
tight wads of crack? you lost homie. told you shit was over your head. Dont worry, much of it is over mine to on the first listen, but thats why i like the clipse.
Speaking of which, can someone explain the album title? I think the quote is "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" right? Its from the bible yes? So is he talking about that girl?
Since when did a good rap release have to SAY something?
Now Camp Lo, those guys were really saying something.

Actually, there is one line somethingsomething about "lyrical jihad" that had me thinking of that recent comparison of lyrics from Jeru and Jay-Z in the Kingdom Come thread. And it didn't remind me of Jay
I don't understand one lyric in "Chinese New Year". Don't understand how that song sounds like Chinese New Year. "Give up the cash before I turn your Cookie Monster blue" I don't care , though. I don't listen to this schitt cause I think these guys are eloquent. Let it just sound good.
Since when did a good rap release have to SAY something?
Now Camp Lo, those guys were really saying something.
C'mon, guys...Do you HONESTLY believe that I'm that serious about Chingo? If it makes you feel better - more importantly, if it allows you to NOT totally disregard my question - CHINGO AIN'T SAYING SHIT. HE NEVER HAS. I can appreciate him for what he brings to the table (namely humor, 'specially the kind that only people who grew up on or near the Mexican border can fully understand).
Now these Clipse dudes....like I said, they are very witty with their descriptions, but I don't feel they're any better than a lot of these other "crack rap" dudes. Wu, Fat Joe, Jay Z, UGK...these dudes say and have been saying much better cocaine-related metaphors for awhile. But they all had something MORE to say (well, maybe not so much Fat Joe). The "remorse/paranoia" track is just like the "wifey" track these days, every CD has to have at least one of each. (Speaking of which, does Hammer still do a Jesus track on every album? Props to him if he kept his word.) Just seems like a lot of you folks (and a lot of the "hipsters"...go figure) ride extra hard with these guys and I honestly don't understand why it's warranted.
What the fuck do I know, though? I'm just waiting to cop that new tee once LabCabin starts selling it:
CLIPSET! CLIPSET! CLIPSET!
Herm
P.S. I do like the fact that they picked the weirder beats as opposed to the surefire club bangers. (I could totally say something about MF Doom right now but some of you fauxtrotters would have a field day with it while totally ignoring the above.) Also, I never said Camp Lo was the truth. I meant the cadence and swagger was similar.
Wu, Fat Joe, Jay Z, UGK...these dudes say and have been saying much better cocaine-related metaphors for awhile. But they all had something MORE to say (well, maybe not so much Fat Joe).
I take it you do think that Fat Joe has "much better cocaine-related metaphors," though?
Nah seriously Herm if you don't see why this record is different (and better) than the majority of recent rap releases then... I would say you don't get the record. It's not about "witty" or complex "phors" it's about their delivery, the feeling, and like I said, saying things without SAYING them. Painting a picture. A conceptual arc, if you will.
I mean when was the last good Wu record?
Fat Joe?
Jay Z?
Your point doesn't even really make sense. None of the dudes you just mentioned have made anything good in years. I don't think anyone's saying this record is better than Cuban Links, or Reasonable Doubt... but shit, those records came out 10 years ago.
I understand wanting to be the hatter for hatting's sake. I really do. I have been hatting on rap (in general) for some time now. But when something good drops, you have to give it due.

Or perhaps simply: 'plex 'phors
You dudes really aren't ready for this weird science.
