  • If you have never seen The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, I would recommend that. The story is decent, though not very entertaining. Though I would not expect all that much from a horror movie from the 20s. The real treat is the visuals and imagery. If you watch it you'll definitely know what I mean. The scenery is really fucked up, almost like an Iron Maiden album cover, and (apparently) has a lot of religious/moral symbolism. Definitely a good watch is you are into horror films

I just threw 'Near Dark' on the Netflix queue, time to give that one another run.

We watched 'Boxer's Omen' last week. That's got to be one of the most mental Hong Kong horror movies ever... the set design is pushing into Jodorowsky territory.

  • The Descent.

I just got the new 2 disc edition of Suspiria the other day, there's a part in the interview with Argento where he says German Expressionism was a influence on the set design of his film,i not sure that i want to go down that road at the moment though.

    Own these two.

i've seen the rest except for The Abominable Dr. Phibes.

Stay away from the sequels! I went into Cube 2 with great expectations and was shocked at how someone could straight up destroy the beauty of geometry.

I HATED 2 sisters. Made no sense. Just stupid.

I watched DEAD END last night and it was great except for the ending which was so stupid I stomped up and down the house bitching about how much of a cop out it was. But, up until the ending the movie was great, and the dysfunctional family dialog had me dying. Wife thought the whole thing was stupid, but I thought it was hilarious.

Watched BASKET CASE today, which was also hilariously great. I definitely recomend that one. I heard the sequels are even better so now I can't wait to watch them.

There are a lot of Jason movies out there, and 2 that I would recomend are part 7 (I think- its the one before Jason Takes Manhattan) and Jason Goes to Hell. Part 7 is violent as hell and just cool. A lot of Jason fans hated JASON GOES TO HELL because you don't actually get to see Jason that much, because his spirit is jumping from body to body. But still, the violence is outlandish, the script is funny (to me) and it has one of the best endings you'll ever see. Also JASON V. FREDDY is good fun.

RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD is a punk rock 80s zombie party bash. Its SO Frickin' awesome. I hope somebody else here has seen this that can co-sign. Its just awesome.

WRONG TURN is one of the best hicksploitation flicks out there. yeah, it rips off a bunch of other hicksploitation movies maybe, but its a great formula so fuck it. It scared the shit out of me.

CABIN FEVER I thought was hilarious too. Its an Eli Roth movie... some people just thought it was stupid and not funny at all, but I guess I don't share the same sense of humor as those people. The movie takes place in modern times, but some of the scenes are straight out of the 70s, and on purpose, and its funny to me.

Halloween 1 and 2, of course.

1408 I thought was great. I thought it was going to pull the same cop-out that DEAD END did, but it didn't. I totally recomend this one.

Vacancy was decent. Had some jumps. I didn't hate it... it just wasn't that memorable I suppose. But it was a good watch.

FRIGHT NIGHT is basically a metaphor for homosexual urges with vampires. At least, thats how one blogger saw it, and I would have to agree. But for some reason the last line of the movie, "OH, YOU"RE SO COOL, BREWSTER!" is just funny. I laughed out loud, and I'm not the only one, since apparently you can buy this shirt online:

which reminds me - Evil Ed (pictured above) was also in 976-EVIL, playing basically the same weird ass character. He's such a freak, and check this out, after these 2 movies he did some stage plays and then started starring in Hardcore Gay Porn. Weird.

People Under The Stairs is funny and good.

Thats all I can think of right now.

    Agree:
Two Sisters -- Doesn't live up to the hype
Cabin Fever -- Don't understand the Eli Roth hate, I loved this.
Vacancy -- Worth a look. Solid thriller, better than expected

    Strong disagree:
    1408 -- I thought this was garbage.

someday Rosemary's Baby will be remade...and I will go on a killing spree.

oh and if we're calling shit out...Suspiria is way overrated IMO. Awesome opening scene, visually there are some great shots, but it isn't scary and it's BORING AS HELL.

    I'll eventually peep this.
I've seen the others you recommended Dizzy
    Except for Vacancy and 1408.

Found Two Sisters to not live up to the hype.

I tend to pick up anything which looks like an Asian horror and Premonition is actually not bad. They've been releasing all the J-Horror Theater films recently and out of these would recommend Infection (Kansen) which is a decent little chiller which makes good use of a simple idea.

The Eye 2 is style over substance and doesn't really bring anything new to the genre.

Would highly recommend Pulse which I found to be an original and creepy take on the long haired ghost tale.

Oh yeah, Dizzy, Basket Case 2&3 aren't even fit to kiss the feet of the original IMO. Would recommend watching Henneletter's Brain Damage instead which is a truly awesome eighties horror movie.

really good movie, used to be one of my faves back in the day when I used to do VHS Cratedigging tours with my friend. We would spend entire weekends, strategically covering ever video rental store in every city, small town or village in the southern half of Germany.

That was a long long time ago and it was amazing what we would come up with. When video stores started popping up all over the place, a whole bunch of private labels bought up old grindhouse material for cheap, dubbed that shit on tape and sold those flicks that otherwhise would have been forgotten to chains of video stores.

Not only did we unearth the most vicious and morally corrupted Cannibal , Zombie and Rape-and-Revenge movies but also those strange flicks that were both at the same time, Art and Exploitation. The above movie is a perfect example for this.

Some of the most insane stuff that I've found back in those days were "El Topo" (imagine, shoving this tape into the VCR without ever having heard a word about the movie...) and "Viva La Muerte" by Jodorowsky friend Arrabal.

It's great to see how DVD nowadays does the same thing as VHS back in the day in terms of bringing back the Gems as well as the terds of leftfield movie making.

the probably sole example for euro-nazi-biker movie with hardcore slasher gore action, classic castration scene and al in all surreal levels of hilarity:
(not a horror movie so sorry for this case of thread-abuse...)

OG movie poster, identical with VHS rental cover design

    DVD cover:

it's trash, it's really wrong and it's a whole lot of fun to watch with a lot of beer and some friends...

This one here on the other hand is a true piece of art that to this day has been criminally underrated:

Director Claudio Guerin Hill who also wrote the script has managed to create a totally unique piece of work that is rumored to have strong biographical references to its creator. This was the first and last feature movie by Claudio Guerin Hill who died falling from the bell tower on the final day of filming.

This right here is some next level artsy horror drama about human depravity that at several points becomes almost unbearable to watch. It's a must see in the truest sense though...

HUGE cosign on both of the above.

Rosemary's Baby is one of those very few movies that define a genre.
A movie so perfect in every detail that it's already scary just how Frickin' good it is.

Suspiria is a piece of shit. Supposedly takes place in Freiburg and has some fake "driving htrough the black forest at night" footage that must have been shot somewhere in Northern Italy...
This could have been an amazing movie but Argento fucked it up completely. Stupid lighting also. A miserable failure.

Amazing movie, not so much horror as horrific.

"Opera", "Unsane", "Bird with the Crystal Plumage" and "Inferno" are my favourite Argento films - I think calling Suspiria shit is an overstatement!

"Isolation" out of the UK is not bad- good idea, good suspense, cute girl and good effects.

Despite the horrible name, "Dog Soldiers" is one of the best werewolf movies I've seen - great pacing.
And speaking of which, American Werewolf in London was on TV the other night and the transformation scene in the hotel room is just amazing...given the technology of the time, it is so good! The details and the fact they take their time doing it is what makes it.

Larry Cohen's "God Told Me To" and "Q" are a bit on the chesse side, but entertaining and worth watching imo.

I'm still not sure if I liked "Sheitan" - would like to hear what others thought. I like elements - but as a horror, it was meh.

To clear some confusion... Dead End (2003) was the movie I was talking about, but yeah- Wrong Turn: Dead End is the sequel to Wrong Turn, and I heard its not as good as Wrong Turn OG at all. but its still in my netflix queue.

Dog Soldiers is fun, and by the same director as The Descent, which other people in the thread upped and both are definitely worthwhile.

I love those Larry Cohen films as well.

Pretty short on laughs but another one that I enjoyed recently was Ils (Them) a french film about a couple whose remote house is attacked one night buy a bunch of faceless youths. Basically a film which relies on tension more than gore and, though the ending wasn't brilliant, well worth checking out.

I have to check out this one...

The Home Invasion sub-genre has always been a favorite of mine, best example is this one (besides being the best film Wes Craven ever made):

David Hess is amazing in it. I met him at a movie fare years back and he turned out to be a real nice guy.

This was kinda the italian version of the above master piece, also starring David Hess and all in all not bad at all...

    "wanna come up and party?"

This one is amazingly good and a tour de force in the truest sense of the word:

any one of these movies shits all over Tarantino's entire work (past, recent and future) from a very large altitude.
