Can anyone recall previous 'status-quo' styles of the NBA from BITD?

For instance, were there ever any previous era's in the NBA where teams were too focussed on getting iso/type superstars and putting the team on their back or has the game always been a true team game up until the last 15-20 years?

I ask because sometimes I think (like many people) I get too wrapped up in the present not being as good as the past when, in truth, there is a natural ebb and flow to the game and different schemes/shools-of-thought/tactics evolve and have their moment before being defeated by the next.

    Just curious.

    From 95 - till...

All the champions played team ball.

Houston had The Dream w/ plenty of role players contributing
The David Robinson Spurs had a Shawn Elliot and Mario Elie
Detroit had stars and no superstar.
*Wade and Shaq might have been star dependent....but Payton, Mourning,White Chocolate, and Antoine Walker were important.
    The Lakers played the Triangle.
Dallas had team play and wasnt riding Dirk
Boston had three old men and Rondo.

Issiah Thomas would have been a superstar if he wasn't in the shadow of Magic and Mike?

Thomas was a bonafide Superstar. Two rings as a leader of the Bad Boys that kicked Mike, Magic, and Birds asses.

Pops can coach and win with knuckleheads too.

Stephen Jackson is a testament to that. And they brought him back too after his antics.

Popovich is the best NBA coach in the last 25 years...and I don't want to hear any Phil Jackson (MJ, Kobe, Shaq) nonsense.

Pop coaches a team with three HOFs on it, and has for 4 of his 5 rings. The other team had two HOFs.

It's not like he's turning a turd into gold.

    Patty Mills - bench warmer
Danny Green - overseas two years ago
    Boris Diaw - right system
    Tiago Splitter - slow progression
    Marco Bellinini - good guard
    Corey Joseph - who
Kawai Lenard - no jump shot
    Matt Bonner - Matt Bonner
    Austin Daye gets a ring????!!!??
Does Shannon Brown already have a ring from LA?

Pop is a good in game coach, the staff slowly develops their talent, and they have a set system.

No one is saying he isn't. But eliminating Phil because of the star talent he had, when Pop has had similar star talent isn't being fair, IMO.

Not to mention Pop got rid of Jackson the second time around after trying him out

Phil Jackson was made because he had HOF players, San Antonio has 3 HOF players because they played in that system.

Going to have to respectfully disagree. It was the system ( Triangle) that brought those rings to LA and CHI. Just ask the players.

sure, he's won two titles since.... but i dont think the sound of this preternaturally sarcastic kid's voice has ever fully left lebron's consciousness:

they start em young in beantown.

This kid was a Heat fan. He was crushed when he learned how what he said was seen as negative.

Still hella funny, and used all the time on Boston sports radio.

I think Pop can do more w/ non stars than Phil can.
But we have yet to see Pop w/out Robinson/Duncan or Phil w/ MJ/Pippen/Kobe/Shaq/Gasol

We have to go thru all the rosters and go role player for role player.

Put it this way: You think Jackson could win while sitting MJ/Pippen/Kobe/Shaq for long stretches, if not entire games?

The farthest i saw him get w/ out Jordan was the year Pippen went bazerk and lost to the Knicks in the ECF on ticky tack foul on Hubert Davis

Batmon, before you start crowning Popovich as the greatest of all time, let's not forget he has had the luxury of working with ownership who has kept the same key players this past decade or so. And he has had three GREAT players at each position, PG, SG, and PF throughout this period. Rarely is a coach afforded this opportunity. Maybe Jerry Sloan with Stockton and Malone.

Phil Jackson is tremendous at managing egos. We all know this though. And he doesn't micromanage. Him and Popovich are completely different types. But get similar results.

Other great coaches in my era:

    Adelman with Sactown
    Larry Brown with Detroit
Hubie Brown with Memphis (This was such a fun squad to watch)

Harvey said it originally and it wasnt for Goat status.

Pat Riley is up there as well.
He got to the lockout season Finals with Ewing.
And paired a still effective Shaq with a young Wade.

Pop looks good right now because his role players really crank it up a notch, and arent so star dependant.

    Quick NBA Draft observations.

Teenagers wearing bow ties and fake glasses is fucking corny. Get over that shit.

Wiggins will be infamous for all the wrong reasons for the suit he's wearing.
