The EPMD catalog starts to sound real after the fourth lp.
I don't think many longtime EPMD fans even consider those two comeback records as part of the catalog; it's like judging Rakim on the basis of his 1999 album The Master.
In 2005 is anyone still actually trying to say that schitt is good, though?
living in predominantly white dorms i found that for a lot of people, this is the ONLY HIP HOP ALBUM THEY OWN. also see deltron 3030, which also sucks.
Im sorry........I have to defend that album. I still bump that shit. But I've been following KK for a minute.
I still like that album. I think it's dope and way better than EPMD. Dr. Octagon has some nice, dark beats.

Wait a minute.......
Yeah alot of music mags put this album on their "gotta have lists" That's one of the reasons KK disassociates himself from the LP.
i already kind of hated this album before living in the dorms but being subjected to multiple listens from hanging out with people that heard I listened to hip hop (girlfriends included) has brought my dislike to an almost nausiating level. many conversations ending with "ultra what MCs? no, never heard them." rock critics and trackjacket-types who work at shitty record stores like to put this on their lists because it proves that their "down", but in reality it just reveals the opposite.

Come on you know you like it. That DJ Shadow remix of Waiting List. "Go see the doctor..." Nice.

You don't really think that invoking DJ Shadow in connection with it is gonna make me like it more do you?
That's a classic record man. What about it is to you??
This is why people on soulstrut should never talk about hip-hop. Ever.
It's good, but I think the whole edansloppywhitefastrap trend blew it up like its the second coming. I just don't think its worth all the fuss, maybe I'll put it back on the platter this evening and give it another listen.

I do like that the 12 has an a capella and inst.
That was recognized as a minor classic long before eBay nerds were throwing around the term "fast rap"...

It wasn't meant to make you like it. I said it to show one of the highlights on there. Not just cuz of DJ Shadow.
i can't believe this thread has made it to two pages and Shadow has only been refered to in a POSITIVE manner.
and even more shocking... no dissin on madlib?
Good point. I think MF Doom is overrated. Madlib is way too overrated. But the thing is they are overrated within groups. The "underground" heads mainly.
and again, it's not the music, it's the fans that are obnoxious. (reppin' this album but never having heard of Critical Beatdown)
i generally agree with the "not the music, it's the fans" aphorism but here it doesn't apply. this album was already bad, and has become even worse to me because i've had to listen to it a bunch of times.

INDEED. Why this record deserves its "classic" status:
Lyrics: dudes are soooo on point. Lyrics hold up today still.
Punks be pullin up in caddies, knowing that car belongs to your daddy pumping the volume up in the speakers... when they blow your pops gonna beat your butt you're out of gas and still rollin, cause your mind these girls are controlling "we should go around my way" and just like a _______ you say "ok" you should've known you wasn't gonna make it go for a towtruck somebody takes it. NOW YOU'RE STUCK WAY OUT IN BROOKLYN you're in deep the way things are lookin your can't get home cause you live too far your cash and ID was back in the car. Now you wish you had driven your Duster But it's too late - you've been had by a hustler....
Suckers be trying to play like they're big shots, flashing cash you ain't even got playing the role like you're big drug dan, knowing the cash goes straight to the boss man the only cash you got is car fare, other than that not a dime to spare do you have when you post on the ave it makes me wanna laaaaaugh! Always talking about the way you're packing a gun, everybody knows you're just acting. Some of the buddies that you call a posse be plotting and scheming to get them some SCOTTY! They know you talk much trash, and you're full of it. And when you do have a gun, there's no bullets. So don't try to front on me buster, cause you're nothing.... Just a SMALL TIME HUSTLER.
I see in the clubs kids try to be grown, Pretending your rich when you still live at home Never paid rent since your life began, Got your allowance and think you're a MAN! Brag on your house but your crib is wack You walk in the front and you fall out the back Go with your girl but she wants something foul So you go suck a token out a turnstyle...
Styles: dudes were flipping mad different cadences for that year. Shit was truly advanced.
90% of the bullshit that hiphopsite tries to shove down our throats (ay yo). Man ,pretty much any underground hip-hop that's popular is garbage, a lot of that shit is straight up frat-boy/whitegirl shit.
I found myself sticking to the same half dozen backpacker rap dudes/groups

I think that Dr. Octagon record is cool and Qbert does some crazy shit on there, but come on man.

What's the correct pronounciation of "schitt?" I keep spitting on my monitor whenever I try to say it.
