My only quibble is that very little in the world of recorded music is fucking w/ "You Set the Scene" off of "Forever Changes"
...and seeing it played live in a small club, with electric guitars and organ playing the string parts, now that was mindblowing.
Seeing Arthur Lee & "Love" live (2002) on a whole had it's ups and downs, but "You Set the Scene" alone was worth the price of admission, and then some.
It has been a relatively good week for records so far:
Top left LP is Marvin Gaye Live. The 45s are Gene Chandler 'Duke Of Earl'; The Coasters 'Thumbin A Ride'; Four Tops 'I'll Be There'; The Shirelles 'Nobody baby After You'. I had been after a clean, cheap copy of Chicago The Blues Today Vol.1 for the longest time.
Unfortunately, the one on Soul Dimension sucks. The label and title are so dope, tho - are there good titles on this label? --- Valentinos doesn't suck! Tough proto-disco or what they used to call "modern soul" excuse the tea-stained takeout cup peeking through the Valentinos
LP action:
Beatles-influenced psych record on Musicor - from the NY area, 1969 - super clean and definitely
Totally different mixes of both tracks (flip is ...Bandwagon) Both remade uptempo, late-80's club style - it only works because they actually add MORE echo than the originals, making it sound almost dub stylee and I like how they cut in more of the Aretha sample, vocal cuts on the chorus.
Bobby Hutcherson is all over that Harold Land, and I'm feelin' it. Mtume, too. Rationals was a cheap eBay score, has it's moments. Dr. John is off the hook but I need to spring for a minty one.
Paper Garden is pretty ill - a couple of "goodtimey" tracks kinda harsh the mellow a bit, but there's lots to like about it, and a couple true burners. I paid a decent amount, but in trades so it was easier to swallow
what we need is a soulonice mix cd!
It won't be long. I do always want to do a quick mix just using records from a "finds" post, like post up a 15-song mix using every record in the flix...
...there's a more disco-mix (by Tom Moulton) of this track on an LP called "Disco-Trek" on Atlantic from circa '75 ... that album has an awful cover and a real weak look to it, but it's early disco mixes of good Atlantic artists tracks from the early 70's, and worth grabbing for the $3 it usually goes for.
not rare at all in california. i may still have a few sealed copies of the 12" lying around. i cant sell that fucking record. once or twice i got $15 or so on it but thats it... maybe its hard to get where you live.

wow... well i guess all your friends at the uk soul msgbds dont need it. ive tried selling both speeds for... well, the 45 anyway... for less than half what you quoted. i also didnt get any bids at all on ebay and this was just last year?!?! oh well... ill get it again. i met a few of them just recently so maybe theyll have more copies.
How does Bobby W flow on that Valentinos? Never heard that one...
ugh... i played this for you and their other one on ... its a red label... anyway... youve heard this. i even played it for someone at the last garage sale.
good $5 record. bobby womack is
the len rideout record is cool... i tried selling that for $15-20 or something like that on ebay. i think i got it. his 45 on hotlicks or his 12 on rotr are what youre after. i had a poster from a hotlicks show that had a picture of shock g from digital underground on it when he was in his first group.
haven't been out to find records lately, so i've been sticking to the 'bay. finally got these og reggae 45s in the mail yesterday. really pumped about them:
dillinger - eastman skank/version (well charge) cornell campbell - natty dread in a greenwich town/ king tubby - version (justice) johnny clarke - we're going to a ball/ aggrovators - version (weed beat) big youth - hit the road jack / tippa tone style (negusa nagast) heptones - fattie fattie / version (studio one) john holt - do you love me / sound dimension - version (studio one) john holt - goodnight my love / can't keep us apart (weed beat) jah thomas - midnight rock / dub (gg's) sound dimension - real rock / version (studio one) skatalites - below zero / gaylads - lady with the red dress (coxsone)
the 5 stairsteps & cubie - "love's happening" idris muhammad - "house of the rising sun"
btw, anyone have an opinion on that idris muhammad lp? i can't seem to make up my mind about it: or ? seems to be one of those love it or hate it kudu/cti records that people have been talking about on other threads, though the drumming is crisp and on point, no doubt.

i really like side 2, and especially "sudan" on that record. can't really get with any of side 1 at all. good 1-tracker (or 1 1/2 tracker).
Scored WATTSTAX at some shitty old and new shop. Got covered in dust and mold but it was worth it. Also got Rotary Connection (s/t), Al Kooper - Al's Big Deal/Unclaimed Freight and Taj Mahal - Music Keeps Me Together.
Southwest FOB - Smell of Incense (HIP) Bold - S/T (ABC) OST - The People Next Door (Avco Embassy) Merl Saunders - Heavy Turbulence (Fantasy) Wille Tee - I'm Only a Man (Capitol)
and from last week but I finally listened to it -
The Younger Generation - We Rap More Mellow (Brass) 12"

It should be a $5 record. but i've sold this one for $30 - $50 three times.
