walked into a spot today that i seldom check out because they usually have a pretty dismal selection. the store also has tons of records that are out, but not accessible to customers. i thumb through an unpriced section, and ask the dude if he can price them if i pull some out. said he would check them out online since the records were 'higher end'. well, it was mostly shit, the same shit that i sift through on every other visit. but i did pull out vg copies of the following:

    baby huey lp promo

    james brown - reality lp

lyn collins - check me out lp

willie mitchell - solid soul lp

    new birth - birthday lp

nite liters - different strokes lp

world class wreckin cru - turn off the lights lp

too short - born to mack lp

leroy hutson - feel the spirit lp

betty davis - they say im different lp

plus a couple of clunkers to possibly balance the damage.

i take the records to the register, totally expecting him to price them silly high, he looked at each of them, and told me none of them were for sale, cuz he can get money for them online. he never checked the computer, and had no interest in even trying to sell them to me. i walked out kind pissed. so now i have no weekend finds.

That pissed me off just reading it.

You should have punched him in the face, threw a pocket full of change on the counter and left with them.

You gotta love record store clerks that get their customers to select which records to list online next week.

one notorious dude down here has a store full of (mostly) crap and does this...fucking ruthless. because among the clutter crap, i've found stuff like ESP disk promos, lots of awesome private press shit, and some cool imports. but i've learned to either a) buy the rec's when his 16 year old backwards-baseball cap wearing clerk is working since dude doesn't know shit about records (and is too lazy to look em up in the "price guide") or b) bring it up to the counter only if i intend on buying. other than that, it stays in the clutter, and dude gets the as i intentionally bring up the high inergy and tavares rec's he prices at 14 a pop.

Whats even more ridiculous is this isn't even that money a stack of records in VG shape, aside from Baby Huey...... that Wreckin Cru is an effing dollar grab...

15 years after snatching the first records from my mothers collection, I thought I couldn't possibly squeeze more out of it.

But lo and behold, during my last visit I looked through it for the umpteenth time and found a funny little thing:

Strange local 7". I imagine that this was a group that toured the discotheque circuit during the 70s, and this must have been sold after shows.

The vocals are terrible - danes trying to sing in a 'funky' way in english with a danish accent - but the music is kinda cool.

  • Woah, nice shit Birdman! Birdcall... "police in helicopter" is my shit.

I went out scouring on a tip even though I've got a nasty cold and it was snowing. Found some decent odds and ends.

    Oh yeah, and Pelon.

This was just the reggae. My wife called me from a garage sale saying "they have some records and Cds, bring money".Got a bunch of disco and rap 12"s as well as a batch of soul Lps including a nice copy of Tighten Up by Archie Bell and the Drells and Charles Earland Live at the Lighthouse, both of which have eluded me for years in good shape and cheep.

over 100 pieces in total as well as a bunch of books, so I pretty much cleared it out. Still going thru it. A good Saturday considering how I still felt like shit from this lingering cold/flu. But it was good to get my fingers dirty again.

guzzo what that lotus palace about?

Alan Lorber Orchestra[/b] "The Golden Lotus" (Verve) -kind of a psych jazz thing with a lot of heavy indian instrumentation. Covers of the Look of Love and Lucy in the Sky with diamonds and some nice funky jazz originals

JP:[/b] That Paulette Reaves was a bit of blind buy, I'll grab anything I see on Blue Candle, had seen this one on a couple websites but never seen it out in the world or listened to it. Still havent actually, I'm getting lifted, listing ebay auctions and saving that one for halftime

just a couple, picked up cheap yesterday on the fly.

Townes is a Poppy OG, cheap because of
radio staion graf on covers & labels,
    but plays dreamy. Great record.

Can I get an OG Czech[/b] on the Redd Holt??
Anyone have an OG they can spec for me?

I think you'll dig it - it's an old head record, there's a couple ballads that the old soul set play out here. There is also breakbeatfast and a nice sample joint.

It can get some decent dough, last copy I had I flipped for 50 or 60, I think on ebay it might get a bit less.

  • Fleas and record stores weren't bad this weekend.

    =============================
    STORES
    =============================
TRADE - Amen Corner: Round LP (promo)
Decent mod rock/r'n'b, mostly covers like "Our Love Is In The Pocket" and a few hammond heavies, marred a little bit by weak vocals.

    6.00 - Gil Scott-Heron & Brian Jackson: It???s Your World 2LP
2.00 - Pete Shelley: Homosapien LP

    =============================
    FLEA MARKET
    =============================
1.00 - Patrick Cowley & Sylvester: Do You Wanna Funk 12???
Why do I find Patrick Cowley records only at the flea market, and in bins otherwise full of marina rock?

.50 - Brenda Holloway: Every Little Bit Hurts / Land of 1000 Boys 45
I'd only heard the Small Faces version until now. Yes I am an herb.

.50 - Jerry Butler: Cause I Love You So / Mr. Dream Merchant 45
A-side is all about "squeezing the neck" and "punching the nose" of your lover. Let's hear if for spousal abuse soul.

.50 - Yolanda & The Charmanes: There Oughta Be A Law / Hootchy Kootchy 45
Funny girlgroup from '62 that made it to Jack Nitzche's "Record of the Week!"
    http://www.spectropop.com/JackNitzsche/ahjnrotw.htm

.50 - The Hombres: Go Girl, Go / Let It Out 45
.50 - The Winstons: Amen Brother / Color Him Father 45

    .50 - 7-Eleven: Dance The Slurp 45
    Oops it's VG- oh well.

    .50 - Maurice Williams: Nobody Knows / I Know 45
    Masterstroke of a-side/b-side naming.

1.00 - Sebastian: Living In Depression / Do It For Someone (You Love) 45
FINALLY. The Virginia-based vocal version of Little Royal's "Razor Blade." Is this raer, anyone?

2.00 - Candi Staton: Stand by Your Man / How Can I Put Out The Flame 45
To go along with my Bettye Swann version.

2.00 Freddie Scott: Are You Lonely For Me / Where Were You 45
Killer soul doublesider. A-side is the song made famous by Rev. Green.

2.00 The Mad Lads: Love Here Today & Gone Tomorrow / Make This Young Lady Mine 45
    NICE.

7.00 Black Lightning: Shades of Black Lightning LP
Whoa this is a cool-looking album. Sure it sounds like a 60s white band doing r'nb but there's some nice club tracks, breaks, and basslines on this. Plus it's "Raj ISH???-approved!"

  • Birdman9Birdman9 5,417 Posts
    found one of these too

    Guzzo everywhere

  • That Paulette Reeves is a nice one.

I have her other one on Blue Candle - it's about the same.

Damn, nice find on the Black Lightning!

Brenda Holloway: Every Little Bit Hurts / Land of 1000 Boys

I really dig the B-side on that one. Her Tamla material is probably the best female Motown stuff of the 60's, except for maybe Gladys Knight.

Decent mod rock/r'n'b - - - marred by weak vocals.

WAY too often the case. So many of those bands rock until the vocals come in, and you are reaching for the needle...

Freddie Scott: Are You Lonely For Me / Where Were You 45
Killer soul doublesider. A-side is the song made famous by Rev. Green.

Scott actually had the hit - #1 R&B and in the top 40 pop, his was the OG that was covered by so many.

Jeez , am I ripping off pickwick33's posting style or what?!

  • Jeez , am I ripping off pickwick33's posting style or what?!

Hahahaha!!! That's exactly what I was thinking. But there are certainly much worse Strutters you could be imitating. Pickwick33 is the man.

J*nny - that Black Lightning is plenty playable for my purposes but would probably grade at a VG- so inclusion in Good Records' store stock would probably be BTW I'll be in NYC next month; I'm looking forward to checking out the store and finally meeting ya IRL.

I'm loving this one right now

Some pretty nice tracks. She sounds like Gwen McCrae with a sweeter voice. Heres a cover form the LP

I Forgot To Be Your Lover

Birdman:[/b] listen to "Fighting in the Name of Love" if that shit don't make you want to dance you have no (moder) soul
