Really though, the necessity of guns (or lack thereof) depends entirely on where you live. I'd say probably 95% of people in the US don't NEED a gun. Most cities of any size (like, 25,000 and above, some smaller) have at least some gunfire from time to time.
The city I live in currently is on the smaller side (approx 225,000) but I've witnessed a couple attempted shootings, heard many more, and my girlfriend had to pop a bullet out of her bedroom wall on the second floor.
No guns here, but my dad's got an AR-15 (the civilian m16 I think he called it), a 357 magnum, a 22 pistol, and 2 hunting rifles, and he gave his wife a 22 with a purdy case.

Guns are ,I'm glad I live where they are not an everyday issue. I'm all for gun control laws, however in the US I think its probably to late for that as you can't put the genie back in the bottle...
