the 'watch the throne' thread has got me thinkin,
i can't remember the last rap album i really liked where there wasn't at least one dud track.
big boi's was close, but 'general patton' is straight up shitty.
when i think of great rap albums with no filler of course 'illmatic' comes to mind, along with some other old stuff.

so,

what was the last great rap album with solid tracks top to bottom?

I can't think of a flawless album either.

But there's no accouting for taste, so I tend to give an artist the benefit of the doubt if I love most of an album and am so-so about a few bits. So "no filler" is a relative thing.

I know that I LOVED the VAST MAJORITY of Marcberg. I'd have to think if anything more recent tops it.

Off the top of my head, I don't skip anything on Supreme Clientele, Hell Hath No Fury, Dirty Money, Emeritus or OBFCL.

More recently, I can think of tapes, but not studio albums.

    Please share your thoughts.

EDIT: I'll start...Snoop's We Da West from last spring was so tight.

Rainy Daze is turrible. You can do it with almost every album. Too hard to be flawless unless you have 10 tracks like Nas did.

Not all super-recent but: Z-Ro's 5200, Na'Tee's Guess Who's Coming 2 Dinner, Jeezy's Trap Or Die2, Scarface's Dopeman Music, Nipsey Hussle's The Marathon and I would put Lil Wayne's No Ceilings up there, too.

edit - might as well add Nipsey's Bullets Vol 1

  • I'll probably get shat on from a height for this, but I really enjoyed this:

As for no albums being flawless, even 'It Takes A Nation of Million' had instro fillers, but I can live with that.

That Elzhi joint is tight as well,

    NWA - Straight Outta Compton

    Cypress Hill - Cypress Hill

These come pretty close - I'd be hard pressed to think of Rap albums i listened to more when and after they came out.

edit: Oh, and Illmatic. Hard To Earn and Step In The Arena.

And as far as the op goes, i'd say

    &

    had very little filler

How can you even put a fanboy cover/tribute album in this category? He wrote a couple of new raps and tweaked some beats and its a classic? its riding coattails that are like 20 years old. that said it was a decent thing but you can't count it here.

Agreed. This is going nowhere. Rename it "we have very different tastes" and well be fine

Lemme clarify: I like the beat, I like da rapz, I hate the fuckin singer. I guess it's a personal thing.
Carry on with this soon to be trainwreck thread.
