"EYE KNOW" - OFF 3 FT HIGH AND RISING

    I love this song...

...but it's not the first song off "3 Ft. High and Rising." It's midway through side A.

I can't believe no one's mentioned "One For All".

It was in one of the first few posts in the thread. I think 6th or 7th.

you're right. I never learned to read though, because when my teachers told me I couldn't rock my grill I dropped out of school.

I respect your unwillingness to be molded into a
future cog in the soul-destroying labor class.

  • Road to the Riches - Kool G Rap

And, actually, I've long argued that this album deserves the award for best first THREE songs on a rap album:

    Road to the Riches
    It's a Demo
    Men at Work

Those three tracks back to back were like crack for me as a kid

    .

    follow the leader
    microphone fiend
    lyrics of fury

also yeah yeah I know it's a mixtape and all that, but as far as being a first (post-intro) song on a record that pretty much eclipses the whole thing, "I Love This Game" is barely contested.

Allah U Akbar - Brand Nubian

    NO DOUBT!!!!!!!!

And it wasnt a single, video,or lead off single for the album. Just a great album cut that happens to be first.

well, it WAS a single off the album (or is it the b-side to Steal Ya Hoe ?)

Plus, a lot of songs mentioned are simply the only good song on some albums.

    and i own this, duh.

  • BUMP.

  • "Sunrise" - Large Pro. Maybe considered more of an intro though. Still it always struck me as fitting this category. The LP not having a proper release is a huge crime in hip hop history to me

The LP has had a proper release: http://www.discogs.com/Large-Professor-The-The-LP/release/1896200

Most of my favourites have already been mentioned, but here's two more:
    Main Source - Snake Eyes
    Rascalz - Really Livin

I can't front. I didn't know about this and am tracking a copy down right now. Still LP was stripped of the opportunity of having an official release back in 95, around the time the material was made and intended to be released. Such quality hiphop. A commercial release today is better than nothing, but nothing compared to what it would have been back in '95.

  • Outkast - Return of the "G". It's not better as a song than some of the songs above. But as a first song it's better than almost all.

I was about ready to smash something if nobody mentioned this. For years, Breaking Atoms was my "getting ready to go out and tear shit up" record. Even now, whenever I hear this song, I feel compelled to pour out a big drink and skin up or something.
