font class="post"1b,121b,121You ever read Brutality Garden? a href="http://books.google.com/books?id=npVAHOFbdwYC&dq=brutality+garden&pg=PP1&ots=FyBcWTZ9HM&source=bn&sig=5FzFEQrVk0KUFU-Ieo-eWXFJ2tg&hl=en&sa=X&oi=book_result&resnum=4&ct=result" target="_blank"1http://books.google.com/books?id=npVAHOF...num=4&ct=resultb,121b, 21Wondering how this book stacks up in comparison. b,121b, 21h,121font class="post"1b,121b,121I read both, both have strengths and weaknesses. b,121b,121Brutality Garden reads like (probably was) an academic work putting Tropicalia in the context of Brazilian poetry and visual art. I would've wanted to read a detailed, straight-ahead history of the movement first, but as far as I know this is the closest thing to it that's available in English language at present -- and the portions that hit those buttons were helpful, just not as detailed/developed as I'd like.b,121b,121Caetano's book had a lotta self-aggrandizement. I was highly moved by the portions discussing his and Gilberto Gil's period as political prisoners, I would almost recommend those excerpts to general audiences who could care less about their music. b,121b,121Both books still left me hungry for more info about the bands, records, and personalitis behind the music and particularly more info about Rogerio Duprat, who seems like a common thread running through much of the most interesting Brazilian pop, rock, psych, and prog from about '68-'78.b,121b,121...as well as all the film scores Duprat did, which makes me wish more 60s and 70s brazilian cinema was available on US DVD... the movies are every bit as exciting as the records from what I understand (and from the lil bit I've been able to see).

  • The last book I bought was Moby Dick. A friend of mine had a journal article about it published a year or so ago and I wanted to read the book before reading his analysis. I was a little intimidated by the books stature, but I have to say it is a great read so far.

The author almost lost me by describing Mayor Fenty as "Charismatic". If you consider your houseplants 'charismatic', maybe she's onto something. Dude is only charismatic in comparison to the last mayor, the ANTI-charisma Tony Williams, the worst politician ever, as in it's a wonder he ever got elected he's so un-politically minded.
