I know some people think this thing is great, but it is an abortion of a movie, I would have walked out, but my date and I were having too much fun making fun of this pretentious piece of shit:
Normally I agree with you on every post that I read but I have to say I really liked this one a lot... is there something wrong with me? My wife also liked it and she has much better taste than me, she usually doesn't fall for any weak stuff...
lol - proving one man's meat is another man's poison
I think this is an amazing movie - gut-wrenching and haunts you for days after, but amazing still.
I felt that Moodyson was trying so hard to convince us of that girls pain in such a ham-fisted way that it becamomes almost parodic. For example, there's a scene in the beginning when her mother leaves her and she falls, crying, into a puddle - in slow motion. That really set the tone. And towards the end her friend is wearing angel-wings so that we, the audience, will understand that he's dead... Moodyson is such a poor director imho. He almost makes me ashamed of being swedish

That's too bad...he's one of my favourites!
I would agree with you on those two scenes if the whole movie was made up of such earnestness. But I thought it was pretty measured considering the subject.
We will most likely disagree on this very point, but I feel like he is able to do archetypes and over-the-top/cliche plots (teenage lesbians, hippy communes, amateur porn...) with a steady hand and a balance of dread, cynicism, iron will and hope. And I attribute some of it to him being from Sweden!
Traffic
I can understand your other choices, but this was excellent.
Not for me - I feel like it's in the same realm of Crash, but instead of race, it's drugs. The ending with the baseball game - uhg. Why didn't they just break out some apple pie, too?

I thought "Together" was amazing. In fact, worked at a video store at the time and recommended it a lot, never had anyone react other than being blown away by it.

Yup - love this movie.

It's nothing but a laughable propaganda piece that excuses the big whig American politicians as well as the Columbian druglords for their part in orchestrating the American cocaine problem while laying all of the blame on street-level dealers and users.
So yeah, maybe it's a well-made, well-acted film...but its message is as bullshit as it gets.
How did you get that as the message? Its saying EVERYONE is at fault. Its not saying the street players are at fault... its saying that because the profit margins are so big and the ghetto is so poor of COURSE people are going sell drugs.

No dude, the rich assholes who ship drugs and guns into the ghetto are primarily at fault. To say EVERYONE like that is the exact cop-out that disregards the fact that most street-level dealers and users are victims of the master plan. But I didn't even take Traffic as indicting EVERYONE as much as it focused on the patheticness of the street-level drug life.

I deserved to get my ass beat for even thinking about watching this trash.

Everything Cuba Gooding Jr's been in in the last 10 years.
Patch Adams/Jack/Toys/Anything where Williams plays a lovable clown with a tendency to weep
Mission Impossible II
Cosign on American Beauty as well - possibly the smuggest film ever made.
