Some interesting details about the Spitzer investigation from the federal complaint that was unsealed last week. What's interesting is he's being pursued by the Feds, which is unusual because prostitution is typically a state offense. Full complaint can be found here.

FBI agents investigating a New York-based prostitution ring caught New York Governor Eliot Spitzer on a federal wiretap last month arranging to meet a prostitute at a Washington D.C. hotel, believed to be the Mayflower Hotel, according to a federal complaint unsealed last week. Although Spitzer is not named in the complaint, a person familiar with the situation confirms he was one of the clients referenced.

According to the complaint filed against four defendants charged with running a prostitution ring that charged rates of as much as $5,500 an hour, the first evidence of Spitzer???s dealings with the ring occurred on February 11, when one of the defendants, Temeka Rachelle Lewis, asked to be informed when a ???package??? of money from a person identified in the complaint as ???Client-9??? and believed to be Spitzer, arrived.

Though the money apparently still hadn???t arrived on February 12, Lewis called a prostitute who used the name ???Kristen??? to book a trip to from NYC to D.C. The client, believed to be Spitzer, would pay for everything ??? ???train tickets, cab fare from the hotel and back, mini bar or room service, travel time and hotel.???

The next day, February 13, Kristen was told that the money had arrived and that she should go to NYC???s Penn Station, where she would take an Amtrak train to D.C. That afternoon, Spitzer called Lewis and said he expected to have an appointment at ???10:00 pm or so,??? and asked who would be serving him. When told it was Kristen, he replied ???great, okay, wonderful.??? The client arrived shortly after 9:36 pm according to the complaint, and left soon before 12:02 am. Spitzer apparently paid ???Kristen??? $4,300 before he left.

he was being investigated by the feds because of the suspicious wire transfers he used to pay for it. The activity was reported by the banks and they thought he was taking bribes.

a HA! I was curious as to why he was being sweated for something that usually (someone please correct me if I am wrong) is not prosecuted unless dude was caught while engaged in it explicitly (ie. a sting of some kind, which catches politicos occasionally). I am sure it happens, but aren't the 'clients' usually called as witnesses as opposed to being investigated/prosecuted. After all, the end result is to discourage/dismantle the business end of the operation (which I know is seen by many advocates as unfair and backwards when it comes to prosecuting the working girls). But this makes sense now. Plus I guess a wiretap is getting 'caught', but I imagine that a good defense lawyer could make hay with that.

Now I would like to hear the REAL reason the DC Madame was being taken to task. She (or some of her clients) must have pissed someone important off big time!

This is the same Elliott Spitzer who went after Sony BMG and the rest of the majors over payola when he was district attorney, right? Hmmm. I bet there's a few bottles poppin' at 550 Madison today.

I think you guys are missing this, he didnt get caught over wire transfers, i think it actually comes off like he was mad careful not to leave a paper trail; he talks about having to go to the atm.

From what i've read it seems like some crazy prostitution sting that dude happened to walk into. Maybe more's gonna come out, cause it does seem like a pretty serious investigation for some escorts, but i'm guessing someone leaked to the times that this big bust in the news last week was actually spitzer....

I'm sure she took a tranquilizer. Can you imagine?

Also, I think it's a federal case because of the interstate commerce involved.

he should resign + be disbarred
    fuck him

  • Oh he is DONE.

My guess is that he resigns by the end of the week. Until then he'll be negotiating with prosecutors to avoid an indictment. I doubt he goes to jail.

What a stupid, stupid thing to do. Unbelievable.

I find it interesting that admitting to an affair is actually less onerous than admitting to procuring a prostitute. The latter seems a lot more "clean" in terms of reducing sex to a transaction vs. carrying on an affair that implies more of an emotional betrayal in addition to the sex. Look at the SF mayor (provided, it is SF so you can get away with a lot) who slept with his best friend's wife. That, to me, seems a lot more foul than dropping $31,000 for a 7 diamond hooker for a day.

    Actually, on second thought...

    O,not to be crude...
but someone who is going to drop that kind of guap on some booty does not sound fiscally responsibile!!! he sounds like a retarded teenager with too much money on his hands. reynaldo, back me up on this!!!!

    hooker + hypocrisy > adultery ?

i feel what youre saying though
getting hookers is pretty much a tax write off in the bizzness world.
why do we expect politicos to be above that??
it sjust like getting a massage after a stressful day in the office...
"honey, i didnt even know the girl...i was up in albany and needed to unwind a little." pfffffffft
