The day before Valentine's Day. Why didn't he just slap his wife in the face.

LOL. OMG! 10 WEEKS BEFORE ARBOR DAY! WHY DIDN'T HE JUST SPRAY PAINT AN ORANGE 'X' ON A REDWOOD?

I find it interesting that admitting to an affair is actually less onerous than admitting to procuring a prostitute. The latter seems a lot more "clean" in terms of reducing sex to a transaction vs. carrying on an affair that implies more of an emotional betrayal in addition to the sex. Look at the SF mayor (provided, it is SF so you can get away with a lot) who slept with his best friend's wife. That, to me, seems a lot more foul than dropping $31,000 for a 7 diamond hooker for a day.

    Actually, on second thought...
    ???????illegal, a crime, not victimless

The illegality of it is kind of arbitrary: if Spitzer had been caught in Nevada, at a legalized brothel, I doubt this would be any LESS of a scandal.

As for whether it's a victimless crime or not, I think it depends on the specifics of the situation. Or you think all sex work is involuntary and exploitative by nature?

    O,not to be crude...
but someone who is going to drop that kind of guap on some booty does not sound fiscally responsibile!!! he sounds like a retarded teenager with too much money on his hands. reynaldo, back me up on this!!!!
Nah, you only live once--and when I die, I want the last transaction on my bank statement to be a $66,000 payment to the Emperors Club.

I definitely disagree that if there was no crime, a former attorney gen. elected as a straight shooting crime fighter would be just as much of a scandal

    he broke the law.

So if he got caught toking one up, people would be screaming "resign"?

    Yeah, I don't think so.

There's a lot of ways to break a law. Paying for high-priced sex is "scandalous" b/c of the sexual content, not because of the severity of the illegal activity involved.

See Gary Hart and Donna Rice. Nothing illegal there but it cost Hart his presidential bid.

Nothing illegal there but it cost Hart his presidential bid. i agree w/ you that the sex part makes it a much bigger deal, but i also thing that if it was a legal activity and if he hadn't in fact investigated and prosecuted prostitution orgs in the past, it would be just as a big a deal.

it doesnt wash. im not talking about the moral question of prostitution, i'm talking about the ethical question of working in a job where one is entrusted to uphold the law yet breaks that law. there are a lot of people who would go to bat for him a la Clinton if this was just about a 'private family matter'. This is a fundamentally different kind of scandal

i also find the partisanship of these things kind of repulsive, like we wouldnt all be dancing on this dude's political grave if he was a conservative

hes an idiot, he broke the law and damaged the party, and staying on will only damage it further

    true.
but he was also an assassin in his day...pulling no blows to the nose.
an apparent crusader for justice in shining armor.
which makes the whole thing rather compelling and shakespearian

I'm guessing it's like ordering a slice of pizza. Extra costs for toppings, delivery, etc. It's the same pizza. Only a slice of pizza for somebody on a dietary program.

I was just telling my wife that if he had just come to DC, hit up an ATM and picked up some homegrown ,uhm...'talent', well, we wouldn't be talking about him here.

CNN is spelling it out as though Spitzer's numerous money transfers just under $10k hipped the feds to the whole operation. So, allegedly he's done this before(duh) the one time he may be on the hook for, and the Escort Service is what the funky transfers were for, and in a weird twist, he may be what got the Escort Service busted! If feds hadn't been following his funny money (because you can't be Gov and have money sliding around), there would be diamond escorts still putting food on the table!

i agree, it is a little ironic that he brought down another prostitution ring
i guess they don't bust escort services unless they have some compelling reason to do so? most of them operate in the open, pay taxes, etc.

if he resigns, someone's losing a superdelegate

  • It just occurred to me..

How many other big names are going to come out as a result of this whole thing?

If Spitzer is using this service then my guess is that all kinds of other high profile people were too. I mean, how do you think he found out about it in the first place? Had to have been recommended by somebody, right? I bet this is just the beginning and that a whole bunch of people didn't sleep too well last night.

Or would they have already been named in the criminal complaint?

    Will Spitzer turn snitch?

    Good point.

    popcorn time indeedy.

Wolf Blitzer dedicated over an hour last night to this story.

    Classic.

I mean, who'd have guessed that men like sex and that men with money will pay to have sex with women who would otherwise be out of their league?

It is funny that the man heading the anti-prostitution campaign got got.

    Hypocritical dickhead.

    Oh he is DONE.

My guess is that he resigns by the end of the week. Until then he'll be negotiating with prosecutors to avoid an indictment. I doubt he goes to jail.

What a stupid, stupid thing to do. Unbelievable.

You called it. From today's Times:

Mr. Spitzer has not been charged with a crime. But one law enforcement official who has been briefed on the case said that Mr. Spitzer???s lawyers would probably meet soon with federal prosecutors to discuss any possible legal exposure. The official said the discussions were likely to focus not on prostitution, but on how it was paid for: Whether the payments from Mr. Spitzer to the service were made in a way to conceal their purpose and source. That could amount to a crime called structuring, which carries a penalty of up to five years in prison.

He hasnt resigned yet because resignation is the only bargaining chip he has in a potential plea deal. Although, I agree there will be no prosecution stemming from the prostitution - I dont think anyone's been prosecuted under the Mann Act since Chuck Berry.

I doubt we will ever learn who Clients 1-8 are, let alone Clients 10-85, unless some other elected officials are part of the equation. They have their big fish, they shut down a high dollar illegal operation, on to the next case. This is ultimately not about the evils of human trafficking, or the perils of prostitution, this is about living by the sword and dying by the sword.

And if anyone wants a glimpse of where I spend my days at work, just watch the news. I am directly across the street from the Mayflower Hotel. They have photogs and mics, newsvans and everything parked out there, as if the Manager of the hotel is going to come out and announce "People do crazy shit in hotel rooms, but not on my watch!" or something. Why on earth would they need to be outside the Mayflower today?

If Obama had real brass balls, he would run an ad in PA with Bill reapetedly saying "I did not have sexual relations with that woman", to remind the good people of PA just who they are really putting back in the White House. This can't be good news for the Hillary camp right now. I say deliver the blow (so to speak).
If he doesn't run an ad like that now, McCain will in October.

News reports say that room 871 that night was registered under the name of a big Spitzer campaign donor. I can only assume that's how he got the Emperor's Club connection.

What is the main trangression here, the illegality of prostitution, the hypocrisy, or violating the sanctity of marriage?

I am starting to believe that they are going to hand over the Ohio and FL delegates. Just a bad gut feeling. And that sense of dismal inevitability setting in, that she is 'The Annoited One'. And trust, they would pull that Bill stuff out like no tomorrow if she gets the nom.

Obama NEEDS to start looking like this shit gets under his skin abit, IMO, or it really is all over. Just saying the opportunity is there.
