apocalypse now with my vietnam vet uncle phantasm on acid with my friends planet of the apes movies at an nyu film festival in the 70s where they played all of em back to back-with my babysitter who was a hot latina -my first real crush
how the fuck could I have forgotten that? good call. think that one sort of goes for everyone....at least I hope it does.
and its sister:
and speaking of Chevy....anybody fucking with
Enter The Dragon was also a good call.
was anyone else sorta disturbed by this? there's still shit that makes me uncomfortable....like when Ringo opens the door to that massive Frankenstein? I don't know - that shit always made me feel weird...
I've seen this one at the tender age of eight or nine late at night at my aunts place. She'd always go to bed early and let me watch TV as long as I wanted to. This one disturbed the shit out of me... but I still really liked it. Had my premature little mind boggling overtime for days and days...
I was 15 when I saw this and it's still one of my top ten movies of all time.
Finaly Harvey and I agree on something, this film not only had an affect on my young life, but life in general. I work in Television and film today because of Glynn Turman's character (Preach). This is one of those films that has aged well, not exactly citizen Kane or anything but the story left an indelible mark on me and my life plans.
other films the defined my childhood
Big Trouble In Little China[/b]
This was the move that my dad and I bonded over the most as a child. the mix of action, cartoony acting, and cheesy dialogue set my 10 year old brain on fire.
Ghostbusters[/b]
funny as hell and another great watch with the parents. My little brother wore this tape out at least twice. The stay Puff Marshmallow man was the most non-threatening bad guy ever and Rick Moranis was just incredibly hilarious
Inside Desiree Cousteau. I Spit On Your Grave. Class Of 1984. The Day of the Locust. Escape From New York. Dogs Of War. Cheech & Chong's Up in Smoke. The Exorcist. Road Warrior. Fast Times At Ridgemount High.
These films made a big impression on me in my teen years.
OK, I saw this when I was too young and as a result, it gave me nightmares for a few weeks. I still watch it and get a lil shook up. Easily one of the scariest movies ever made. You've all seen it, no need to go into detail. Too many horrifying and straight-up nighmarish scenes to mention. A sensory overload of horror and suspense.
Good choice Ad***n. Shit!!! How could I forget this one, seriously threw me as a kid. I couldn't understand the pacing of this movie until I was grown. Hotel hallways still creep me out because of this movie. I remember I saw this one and I was in a trance from start to finish. I had to have been like 8 or 9, and when you're little you start imagining more shit happening than was actually in the movie. Or at least I did.

Exactly! And the fact that the main protagonist is a little kid somehow made it scarier to me when I first saw it. I still have trouble grasping the ending where they slowly zoom to a close up of jack Nicholson's character in a black & white photo from long ago. As a kid I also had a really active imagination, which made this movie that much more of a mindfuck...
TOMMY TRICKER and THE STAMP COLLECTOR Forgot about this one, saw it one time and it did fascinate me enough to never forget it. Could never remember the title, or much else. Except that they could jump into stamps and mail themselves to their penpals.
While we're on the subject of John Carpenter flicks, this is the first movie to scare the living shit outta me as a kid. Again, no need to expound upon the virtues of this horror classic. Donald Pleasance overacting at every given turn, Jamie Lee Curtis brilliantly keeping you at the edge of your seat as she almost gets caught again and again. And of course, one of the baddest onscreen boogeymen ever to wear a William Shatner mask, Michael Myers. This one also still holds up pretty well.
10.THE SHINING[/b]

i'm with you monkey. NEVER realized it was a william shattner mask!!! for real?!?!!
all your matt dillon flicks reminded me of this classic:
10. "A Soldier Story" -This was great film that is slept on. This movie also has great coverage of classism within race, and pointed out the inner struggles between Black folks (in addition to racism). This story was really tragic and ironic. Check this out if you haven't seen it. Adolph Caesar (R.I.P.), Howard Rollins (R.I.P.), Larry Riley (R.I.P.), and Denzel Washington were great in this film.
good list man, im gonna have to check some of those out. i vaguely remember soldier story. light skinned, hard ass sergeant and it happened down south? must have been one of denzel's first roles?
I think Denzel was opposite George Segal before Soldiers Story, which also has David Alan Grier and Robert Townsend.

"Nah...Black Folks arent that devious......."
This is an INCREDIBLE film.
Hey, I was just watching this movie for the first time on TCM the other day. Good cast, good flick. I never really heard anything about it before. Seems like it went kind of under the radar.
Now, there's a question that's been bugging me ever since I saw it. There's this scene where Adolph Caesar's sergeant is humiliating Riley's country boy character and at one point in his rant he goes "the black race can't afford you no more???".
What hiphop group/artist sampled that sentence for an interlude? It's right on the tip of my tongue, but I just can't place it. I know it's real obvious. Beatnuts? Help me out, it's driving me crazy.
These films blew my mind when I was around 11 or 12. The first time I saw 'Holy Grail' I damn near died of laughter. Monty Python was the last word for me at that age.
Can anyone remind of the French film that the waiter scene in Meaning of Life parodied? It's the one that shows all the changing heterodoxies/orthodoxies of the Catholic church. I can never remember what's it called. That one was also big for me; watching it always made me feel subversive.

It got love when it came out. The play was actually very successful.
But no its doesnt get sucked on like the 70's blaxplotation flicks or Spike Lee's Joints.

combine this. and thaer u have my weird humor/ personality / deepressive nature
Zombi-My parents had this one when we lived in germany. I was young and this never scared me. But the next movie on this list does. Even today & I'm 31.
The Exorcist-Nightmares for 2 weeks. Saw this one when I was 11 years old. Today it's still hard for me to watch. This movie really opened me up to believing in a whole lot of crazy shit.
Colors-My fascination with gangs started here.
Juice- why explain. I was a little more thuggish after watching this.
Bad Boys...made me never want to get caught doing stupid shit. Off to jail.
Return of the Living Dead 1 &2-love for horror just increased after this one
Warriors-Before Colors this was the shit.
One more-SCARFACE-quoted all of "TONY's" lines when I was in highschool.
SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER - My mom snuck my sister and I into this cause she was dyin to see this. She covered my eyes during the car-sex scene. I heard that shit though!!!
STAR WARS OG - I dont have to explain this. I was Chewbacca whenever we played.
TOMMY - I saw this on HBO by myself and it sowed the seeds to my drug usage.
OVER THE EDGE - HBO again. I was fascinated by the extra-suburban backdrop. And the kids were running shit. Its a fucked up reflection of 70's kids.
THE WARRIORS - i was too young to see it in the theatre when it came out. I remember the older cats talkin about it in my hood. Talmbout-"Yo did u see that scene when Fox fell into the subway tracks and you see his ear come off.."WTF? To this day I hatt dude for adding that extra bullshit to the story.
REVENGE OF THE NINJA - I fell right into the 80's Ninja craze. I could fuck w/ the regular overhyped Bruce Lee type joints, but Golem-Globus started to crank out the Ninja flicks I was open. I was already reading KungFu & Karate magazine just too get any info on Ninjas, and these flicks were right in line w/ the new fascination w/ Ninjas that many cats had at the time.
SUPERMAN - I was already a comic head by the time these joints came out. The scene where he circles the planet to bring back Lois Lane still gets me teary eyed.
THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN - I still fantasize gettin seduced by the local hot 40 yearold. + One of the best endings ever.
SUPERFLY - Seein this as a youngteen - i knew i had to fuck in a bathtub w/ mad bubbles.
THE WIZ - One of the first Black Fantasy flicks that matched music w/ hidden Black Power messages. + Michael Jackson was my dude.
A couple that defined my "young" life in a negative way (just freaked the living heck outta me): Romper Stomper Once Were Warriors Casino (Joe Pesci's character stabbing the guy with the fountain pen in the throat was a lil too much for me at the time) Oh, and.... Watership Down!! The only movie i STILL haven't been able to re-watch as an adult!!
