You know that's kind of the same argument that I always play in my mind when I think about Al Qaida bombing New York - it's like "Um dudes, if there's going to be any left-leaning people who at the very least might be sympathetic to your gripes, they're probably going to be here" - and vice versa when people in Topeka, Kansas voted for Bush because of "security issues."
I met a girl in Finland a few days ago and she asked me "What are you?" When I broke down my racial background to her ("I'm a quarter this, a quarter that") she said to me "You Americans are so silly with you always trying to add together the little pieces of what you are, when really you are not anything" (her exact words.) She then proceeded to tell me that, even though she liked me, she hated americans because they are so selfish and that the country shouldn't get as much respect as we think we should because as a whole we're arrogant and don't know anything (paraphrasing, but still...) She was 22 and had never been here.
You're (US) the imperial power at the moment so you're going to be hated. Some of it is justified, some not.
As for Al Qiada, they wont make any destinction between westerners by their political persuasions, even western muslims are fair game. Their midset is not one for discourse of this kind.

But the question I have is, even if we ARE the imperial power of the moment, how does that justify a blanket prejudice of Americans? Having grown up in NY I have to say the the most "on point" comments in this thread are those that rightfully state that you can't judge the U.S. simply by looking at NY(or L.A. for that matter).
Having spent much time travelling this country I can understand how even Americans who have spent most of their lives in big cities don't really understand or appreciate that the rest of the country is MUCH different than it's big cities.
This goes for politics, music,popular culture, etc., etc.
I'd really like to hear from those non-Americans who have travelled through the heart of the country, what their impression was and how it differed from the image that is projected by Hollywood and other "entertainment" mediums.
What they show is the most basic shit ever, though- be witty, engaging, and ask questions. Oh, and leave 'em wanting more...
