When I first started playing drums for my high school's jazz band, my teacher told me to get two albums. First was Kind of Blue, so I could play along with the first two tracks. The second was John Coltrane's "Live at the Village Vanguard" to get my mind blown. This album remains my favorite jazz lp more than a decade down the road. also

I guess if we're talking straight "favorites" then
the question isn't as absurdly broad as I first thought.

    hmm ... absolute favorites ...

    Money Jungle

    Jazz at Massey Hall

    Chu Berry "Sittin In'"

    John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman

    Tenor Madness

    Out to Lunch

all the Stash drug-themed 30's jazz comps

    Flood

    Far East Suite

    Chet Baker Sings

    Mulligan Meets Monk

... no, fuck this. impossible to do. I've barely started.

The version of Dylan's My Back Pages is beyond words.

Yeah. Live Japanese 2LP. I tried to
think of the Hancock/Headhunters era LP
I listened to the most, and realized
    it was probably that one.

Out of all the Mingus mentioned, did nobody mention anything with the Original Fables of Faubus on it? That's the shit. While the music is unmistakably wonderful on that song, the lyrics really tie the message to the title.

It's too hard to pick favorites in jazz, too broad, too many good things. Lots of good stuff mentioned here. Horace Silver - SFMF, plus Cape Verdean Blues, Dolphy - Out To Lunch, all the Mingus, , Duke - Money Jungle, all the Coltrane, Miles, etc. Also, Bobby Hutcherson - Stick Up!, Joe Henderson - In n Out, Archie Shepp - Fire Music, add Dolphy - Last Date (his version of Epistrophy is a total facemelter), Mal Waldron/Dolphy - The Quest, Oliver Nelson - Blues and the Abstract Truth, Ornette - Live at Golden Circle 1 and 2, Ahmad Jamal - Awakening......................

And I'm sorry, but if you're calling Simba by O. Levy one of your favorite jazz albums, you clearly don't like jazz. I like that album too, but come on... It has almost nothing to do with jazz music.

I'll say it too, it's too hard a task. In addition to a lot of what has already been mentioned, these come to mind

Hampton Hawes - At the Piano
    Hampton Hawes - The Challenge
Monk/Coltrane - Live at the Five Spot
    Coltrane/Cherry - The Avant-Garde
    Eric Dolphy - Conversations
The Chico Hamilton Special - s/t
    all of Nina Simone
    Junior Mance - Touch
