Are basslines an African thing? Ever heard anyone compare a bassline to the pulse of a heart? Ever had an isolated bassline stuck in your head for like years at a time?
"Welcome to Jamrock" is the new bassline banger of the moment.

Banger of the moment: Definitely.
New: Not so much. It's a Steely & Clevie-produced version from 1983 called "World A Music" made popular by the Ini Kamoze tune of the same name. That's where the "out in the streets, dey call it murdah" part comes from.
Pre-Hotstepper Ini was
Now, send me an XL Juelz T-shirt, plaese and thnaks.
Oh, and no one's mentioned Dennis Edwards "Don't Look Any Further" yet in this thread?

I've heard people compare music that's in the 120 bpm range to heartrate/pulse because someone who is dancing to a rythym in the 120 bpm range usually has a similar pulse. Almost like you are in sync with the music. This was some raver kid's rational for why house music is so universaly popular.

Heard bass compared to the low end sounds heard by a baby in the womb...
Beatnuts -- Superbad, forget which Serge track that is lifeted from, but Serge has so many bassline killers. Lonnie Liston Smith -- Expansions and Shadows S.O.U.L. -- Burning Spear Gangstarr -- take two and pass Michael Carvin Quartet -- The Camel
Though the best is still Sally got a one track mind. That one stasy in my head for days. Anyon remmeber that video? Hard as hell. Just Diamond driving around making left turns and shit in beautiful black and white photography.
Keni Burke: Risn' to the top Masta Ace: Jeep Ass Nigguh Mantronix: Knowledge Me Rakim: Know The Ledge b/w Don't Sweat The Technique Miami Bass Gill Scott Heron: The Klan Brass Construction: Movin' Mobb Deep: Drink Away The Pain (even though it's a filter of that Headhunters jernt) Sade: Paradise Queen: Another one Bites The Dust
also, charlie haden's song for che has a nice bassline where dude sounds like he's playing the bass like a flamenco guitar.
charles mingus folk form 1, and that mingus joint that gangstar used, cant remember the name but he adds these little flairs of him rubbing the strings on his bass or some shit.
Curtis -- Trippin' Out Living Colour -- Time's Up Beatles -- Everybody's Got Something to Hide Funkadelic -- You Can't Miss What You Can't Measure Digital -- Humpty Dance!! Meters -- Hey Pocky Way, Stay Away
The Beatnuts--"Are You Ready" (and of course the Bill Doggett original) The Beatnuts--"Yeah, You Get Props" Love Unlimited Orchestra--"Strange Games & Things"/EPMD--"Manslaughter" Quincy Jones--"Hikky Burr" Herbie Hancock--"Watermelon Man" (of course) Sylvia Striplin--"You Can't Turn Me Away"
HUGE co-sign on all of these and whoever said "Dead Prez - Hip Hop" was another good call.
for some reason i thought for the longest time that cecil mcbee was a chick. part of it is the name (gender neutral) perhaps, and part the absence of his picture on most of the albums i own that he played on, but still ...
Tom Browne - "Funkin for Jamaica (NY)" D-Train - "You're The One For Me" Ronnie Hudson - "West Coast Poplock" Kleeer - "Tonight" (I still need this!) Manu Dibango - "New Bell" Aretha Franklin - "Rock Steady" Heath Brothers - "Smiling Billy Suite pt II" JT the Bigga Figga - "Game Recognize Game" Biggie "Hypnotize"/Herb Alpert "Rise" Common "Watermelon" Dogg Pound - "Big Pimpin"
Dope Slow Jam basslines: Jagged Edge - "Walked out of Heaven" (Trust me, listen to it again!) Kieth Sweat - "Make it Last Forever"
Jaco Pastorius aside, Bob Babbit's solo on "Scorpio" sets the bar for bass solos.

Here are a few not on the list: Neal Hefti's Batman Theme which is quoted by Duck Dunn on Sam & Daves Wrap It Up. The paino bass line on Makeba'a Pata Pata Beatles: She's So Heavy (but Come Together is better).

HASHIM AL-NAAFIYSH (THE SOUL)

There's a million mambo tunes with DOPE basslines (open braek style) but the African shit lasts the most bars in length!
