Why post on weekend finds threads?

Seriously, not a superpoastered question. I mean, there are always 5 or 6 of you giving props to each other (yes, I clicked on that threads). I don't buy the penis measurement theory. Is it the business side of it?Let's discuss and love and hate each other.

    i like to look at records. but some people take a dozen or more pictures of each 45 and then post that,,,yaaawwwwwnn.

    there is def a brag factor sometimes, though.

    because they can be sources of knowledge droppness for newbies (like me, pretty much only me) and some people who have been collecting for a long time. For example, I never new Dizzy did a blackjazz record, that really boggled my mind. So in my opinion its a bit of a contest and a way to drop some knowledge.

    i like to look at records.

    plus I like to see what's turning up where, the randomness of digging, what people think is post worthy, and to tell the truth, the large hauls excite me.

    The knowledge side is cool too, many a record I've spotted on some heads finds post and then picked one up for myself at the next opportunity.

    On the competition thing, yeah, when it's been dry or I've been lazy and I see someone turn some great shit up, it motivates me to get out there.

    For the most part it's become thinly veiled "I will sell or trade these" b/w "I'm really excited I found Johnny Hammond Smith Gears". I have basically stopped posting in them (though I do still read them) mostly because people either A. don't seem to care about the things I'm actually excited about, or B. if you do show a gripped on record people tend to, well, grip on it. IE: when I posted a "hot record" that I had found for $3.99 a few months back I got a zillion PM's from people wanting to "holler at it"... most of whom offered me little or nothing at all. Kind of annoying.

    I agree with crink, though I have not experienced the "million pms" deal.

    I also think that "finds threads" start good record discussion that might not otherwise happen.

    The "Finds" thread is like the News on Saturday Night Live....a staple.

    Good or Bad its cool to see what cats are comin up w/. Its the core of the game.

    It'd be a lot cooler if people only posted records they were actually excited about instead of just putting up a grip of stuff that they bought for a dollar.

    OK, a million PM's is an exaggeration, but you know what I mean. And to be fair, I've worked out plenty of good deals due to weekend finds. But mostly I'm of the opinion that you need to just take your eBay stuff to eBay, or to the sales forum. It's kinda tacky to "floss" them in finds posts. The alpha male posturing is semi amusing though. Sometimes. Kinda.

    1) to brag to like-minded people. I try and get my wife excited about some finds but its not the same
    2) to generate buzz for my record store (Som Records - Washington, DC - www.somrecordsdc.com )
    3) to share knowledge
    4) to get more info on an obscure record (or a record you thought was obscure til you posted it here).
    5) to line up potential trades/sales
    6) to kill time at work
    7) to assure myself that while I may not be the John Holmes of the record collecting world I at least have Tom Byron status.

    I agree with these, and I only try to post when I've got something really exciting. It's porn. I buy hundreds of records any given week but I'm not gonna post that shit. Mainly because

    It is a royal pain to do piecemeal sales with guys who often times, as Jeff said, are not coming correct with the dough or the trades. When I do a set sale, or an ebay list, I am prepared to set my price, answer emails, box and ship... etc etc. But if I get a nice haul, and I take some flicks, and I post them - I am really NOT trying to do all of those things. I do not answer the PMs most times. I am trying to share and entertain, not necessarily sell. When I need to sell a record, it will be sold. I have enough to do on a daily basis, and I really have no problem selling the records on my time, in person, with a lot less headache.

    There seems to be a "hate on weekend finds" post
    every few months or so. Finds posts are (gasp!)
    fun, and the most viewed threads on SS - if you
    don't include threads started by Edith Head - so
    apparently somebody likes them.

    I post in them on the regular because I feel like
    it's a give-n-take proposition ... just like all you
    dudes who bitch about "lurkers" downloading MP3 raer
    or asking questions without contibuting, I know plenty
    of people besides me have learned about valuable/interesting
    records from finds posts, and I feel like it's only right
    to contribute if I have interesting records to share.

    Sometimes I do feel like I'm just posting out of habit and
    won't really have anything worthwhile to contribute that week,
    or I'll get some records that are just "SS favorites" and it's more
    showing off than anything, but all I know is I like looking at
    pictures of records and reading about unusual or cool records,
    so I try my best to contribute the same.

    Also, although it gets tiresome seeing the same dollar bin records,
    I don't think it's so bad to show some stiffs or cheapies you gripped
    too - cherry-picked photos make me think dudes either only buy $50-$100
    records, or are in denial about the low budget side of the game, which
    is a big appeal of record collecting. I posted a Chuck Willis antholgy
    LP on Specialty from the 70's this weekend. I paid $1 for it, and you all
    see it in any record shop in the US for the same. But it has 20 tracks
    on it by a legendary and underappreciated artist. What a deal!

    I love finds posts - I read them just like anyone else, and I've been put up on countless records that way. I just find that if you are known as a record seller then everyone jumps up with the kung fu gripp anytime you post something. That shit makes me not want to post finds.

    whenever you post those crazed collection buys,
    I have to restrain myself from PM'ing you offers,
    knowing that 100 others are doing the same. I think
    a couple of times I haven't been able to resist.
    Still, I hope you'll still throw them up, cause it
    makes for some good record pron.

    I personally like them (weekend finds posts), and I especially appreciate the the enthusiasm of people like SOI and Karlophone, etc... but the general vibe gets lamer each year. The concern about "what is this record worth? Did I get a good deal?", the cocky dudes who think they are king of weekend finds who do not realize that the people who could eat them alive do not post finds on the internet, the afore mentioned gripping, is all kinda weak. It seems to often be about anything but enjoying music. I think often dudes are snapping pics and posting them before they've even listened.
