  • going to the yacht club on Sunday afternoons and sometimes taking the little boat out with just a skipper and one crew, and mom and dad being so mad when we got home because all the help had Sunday's off and so there was nobody to open the gates. Or in the fall when the squirrels would nest in the carriage house.

    remember that? remember?

That made me think of how MEGA Michael Jackson was back then. Stand up if you had a Beat It jacket and/or t-shirt! When that pepsi commercial came on I was in awe.

When I was in first grade, the Michael Jackson joints with the zippers were huge.

I recall one kid offering another kid his lunch money in exchange for being allowed to wear the zip-off sleeves only of the other kid's jacket.

    Wtf?

Things were VERY REAL back then.

No doubt. I feel like the one james would have a worthwhile comment on this particular statement of style gone awry.

I think I may be a little, as they say, too close to the material, as I gave my cousin Rob a replacement tape dub of Raising Hell in exchange for a week's use of his already-on-the-way-out "Beat It" jacket (dudes who went around talmbout "Hey, so-and-so got a 'Thriller' jacket with all the zippers!" got duly sonned). I have to concede, though, that that sleeves-only shit is pretty visionary. The closet equivalent at my school would have been the hot third-grade minute during which kids would take their London Fog bubble-duffle coat and rock just the detachable hood. Maybe floss a hood with some of those ski gloves with the pictures that only showed up when it got cold. Really, the limit was the sky.

    Remember "Field Day"?

    motherfucking word!!!

that was like god's gift to school kids. i always killed in the 'softball throw', feeling like bruce jenner and shit.

I still have my Presidential Awards somewhere. Hey, anyone remember "Weekly Readers" (it's a 70's thang) in elementary school?

    Peace,

    Big Stacks from Kakalak

Word to Weeekly Readers, and also to the Book Club in school.

Also, Highlights Magazine at the doctor's office (word to Goofus and Gallant.)

I couldn't wait until the teacher passed out the Weekly Reader. I was such a nerd. I also used to love "Reader's Digest". Remember these:

-"Dog Next Door" reading textbook in elementary.
    -Lincoln logs.
    -Speak n' Spell.
    -"Perfection" game.
    -Connect four.
    -Mousetrap.
    -Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots.
    -Etch-a-Sketch.
    -Dinah Shore show.
    -Merv Griffin show.
    -Barnaby Jones.
    -Candyland.

    Peace,

  • Remember the blank canvas painters caps that had the fold-down flaps in the back?

Yeah, but the real story was the French-foreign-legion jernts with the split neck drape. It was like a mullet in hat form. My man Kelly (see above) used to rock one with some of those bogus surf shorts that had a tux-style tail on each leg.

YEAH THAT'S WHAT I'M TALKING ABOUT, JAMES! The French Foreign Leigon jawns. They were blank and dudes used to do pieces on the back of them with El-Scripto markers, and then have a matching piece down the side of one leg on their Sassoons.

That hat was absolutely and unequivocally the shit.

I remember rocking that shit and going down to Fishermans Warf and imitating homie doing the robot on a milkcrate.

Arcades... dark, dangerous... East Bay dudes remember Silverball in Berkeley, next to Leopolds? (Shit, remember Leopolds...) I swear, the arcade was where it all went down. There were older dudes that were shady, chicks, the smell of reefer, liquor, blood, candy... of course video games. But the danger and edge of it... man, that shit is gone, and that's what kept us coming back every week/day.

I remember there being two floors to Silverball and the rumor among us scrappers was that the second floor was where you could get "jacked" or "broke" for your change/clothing/??? (there was always something inconceivably worse that could happen to you, other than just getting your shit took).

    Yo,

    I forgot about:

-Finding piles of old, discarded nudey mags (and being mesmerized by them) when riding bikes through the woods as kids.

A group of us boys would look through them (puzzled) for hours.

  • I worked a recycling dump for about a day and found cartons and cartons of porn... from basic playboy/penthouse down to freaky hog tie bondage shit.

I also remember finding porn in black & white (like, newspaper paper! ugh) in the woods, very early in life. The woods were a pretty dope place to learn about life:

    - discovering people humping in the woods

    - discovering people shooting, snorting, smoking in the woods

    - finding a bum barfing out his guts in the woods

    - finding rabid dogs, squirrels, people in the woods

    - there was a rumor for about a year when I was in grade school that there were cannibals in the woods. And we called them cannonballs. I remember being on a trip to said woods (really, just a park) and someone yelling "Cannonball!" and everyone running for BLOCKS.

Yup, my arcades reeked of all of these, and Jakarta's as an added bonus. Many hours were spent at Malibu Grand Prix, Jake's Arcade and Video Forest. I also spent much time at the local bowling alley Friday nights while my dad bowled in his league, I was always bugging my dad for another dollar to get 4 quarters. Thanks dad for always giving me a dollar when I asked.

I never would have known of "Jugs" magazine except from biking riding through the woods. And oh yeah, we did see a teenage couple bonin' out there once. They saw us, shrieked, covered up, and ran off half-dressed.

Also, does anyone remember when potheads in school were rare?

Did anyone used to play a game called Knock Your Mom Off The Toilet?

  • wishing for x-ray vision, and seriously considering the glasses they advertised in the backs of comic books.

  • I bought my copy of Jazzy Jeff's Rock The House out of a Bookmobile.
Truly a great day. Ready Rock C was my dude.

    RE: The Woods

My brother and I found (in addition to empty 40s, porn and mucho critters), a custom dildo made out of masking and electrical tape and newspaper.
At least we thought it was a dildo.
There was a red smear on the end.
Shit was very creepy, especially as the Woods was also where "Satan worshippers" hung out.
I recently revisited this area of Westerville, Ohio and these Woods are no more.

I remember going to an Chucky Cheese in New Jersey while visiting some friends. I thought to myself, it cant be gully in a Chucky Cheese arcade out in the real 'burbs. Lo and behold cats were ice grillin' next to the stuffed animals and shit. WTF?

There's an arcade up in New Ro on the plaza of the Multiplex. I went there to peep X-Men. Cats still had attitude. What is it about arcade. High schoolers trying to hawk. Gety outta here kid.

    -Oregon Trail
-finding a condom on the bathroom floor in elementary school and everyone buggin out
    -McDonalds in the styrofoam packs
-free PB & J at school when you didnt have lunch money or a mom to pack you lunch (and that shit was always messy)

on another note, whoever said it....

you always found your first porno mag in the woods and it was all ripped up and all you could see was like half a titty

  • Arcades...

There was a couple of older dudes (like 16) that just ruled certain games at our local Funway Freeway.
One was a tall Black dude that killed at Zaxxon and whom I followed around everywhere, simply idolizing.
Another was a "Grit" (early '80s Ohio term for teens that smoked squares) that could rip the fuck out of Black Tiger.
    Finished it even.
I thought he was the coolest person on the planet, cause not only did he have game skills and ride a floss PK Ripper, but the dude had a girlfriend.
And they MADE OUT behind the mall between cigarettes.

That show was my shit. Old dudes STAND UP! I gotta run out but I'll be back in a sec to add on.

I believe this show featured some music from the first Kraftwerk LP on Philips.

    [klang]ahead of the curve[/klang]

WOW! That show's theme song is permanently etched into my brain. At the weirdest times, I find myself singing it. In the mold of educational shows...

    - Square One - with whutsherface from Warriors and Carmen Sandiago
    - Mr. Wizard
    - Today's Special
    - Read All About It (although that talking typewritter/computer freaked me out a bit)
    - Sol the hobo Quebecois clown (my Canadians stand up!)

Also, those wooden cabinet systems, that had a tapedeck, record player, radio AND a 8-track player. My sister and I use to kill my dad's when he was at work. I wish I still had it with the velvet lined speaker with wooden bars down the front.
