Actually I was thinking, you know how Harper's magazine prints those sidebar items of the wackiest and wildest stuff they've run across in the last month? Those are always really entertaining.
Well I think Wax Poetics could have a one-page feature where they reprint something from the wilde and woolly online world, it could be from an eBay auction, from Soulstrut or waxidermy or Fryer's forum, or even a private e-mail exchange that goes on blast. I just think that to ignore the online element of record collecting and information-seeking in this current era is to ignore where a lot of the action is.
I read this as well not to good but it had some cool things I guess... But in my head while reading I was sayin dude they really need a proper Curtis Bio fo real... This book jumped around to much, though for the crazy record collector they did have dates of records and numbers.... etc...
More about major label funk groups - like the Nite Liters or Mandrill.
Also more about small label/indie funk groups. I want a fold out poster of rare funk 45 label scans.
A Curtis retrospective, sure - but there should also be a retrospective on like EVERY well known soul and funk figure. Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, Al Green/Willie Mitchell, The Commodores, BT Express, The Bar Kays.
I think a lot of these ideas would work really well. Big co-sign on the Mayfield thing, Euro rare and Japanese rare reports.

The Curtis issue is a great idea, I think. I'd also be interested in stories and pictures from those collectors who go on a multiple week digging trip to Japan/Cuba/... and take home a shitload of records.
Or photo series by really good photographers like B+ who follows diggers/producers. That'd probably deliver some great portraits.

funny you should say that...i was at a friend's house the other day reading an issue of waxpo i don't have and in there was a feature that interviews raj along with dante and somebody from rehash i think.
There's a new Mayfield book currently in the works that involves the family and his business associates. That British book is fucking embarrassment, I don't think one new fact was uncovered in the writing of it. New one is probably two years away, but it will drop, and knowing who's writing it, it will be incredibly thorough.
This is why I like bios about people in the business/arts that focus on their careers and creative process, etc, instead of their personal lives. I remember reading a Marvin Gaye bio, and right after a chapter that told all about individual takes for the "I Want You" album, all this interesting studio lore, and I even thought to myself "this is great, not sensationalism" the very next chapter went off about Marvin being raped as a kid, just graphic descriptions of disgusting shit that I would rather not know about...I put it down and left it alone...
Not that there's no place for a tell-all book or whatever, it's just my personal preference. I read a lot of bios of film directors, and will often skip over the story of their young lives (if it's hundreds of pages) to get straight to the stories of them making films and working in Hollywood, etc.
My only complaint is that sometimes the articles are just filled with straight facts. Biographies are okay. I'd much rather read about the personal life of band members, how the scene was, interesting episodes, etc.
I'd also like to read more about the digging scene, crazy scores, pictures and all.
I sold my issue 1 and 2 last year about this time and I think I got about $80 per. They should really put issues 1-5 in a book format. The mag in general could use more "personality", it's been a little stale and scholarly for my taste.
More small article things, blurbs, asides, snippets... Must haves, Dj play lists, Top Tens, favorite record stores, portables, pics of young famous actresses and pop stars coochy....
