You can get Audacity for XP/Windows too.

  • Audition (used to be cool edit pro) has some awesome filters built in for removing pops and clicks and hiss from vinyl or tape recordings worth getting for that (if you get it free from torrent sites) Easier to use and good for multitrack mixes

  • agree about Adobe Audition. It is a great program, and even has a few things over Soundforge that I like, such as a great Vinyl restoration - but I also find Audition just a little bit too fidly for quick fast use. Perhaps I'm just too used to Soundforge (which I use daily). I have become very quick on soundforge, but to do the same process in Audition is always a bit cumbersome and annoying.

  • vice versa for me but i have only tried soundforge a few times
One trick with Audtion to speed up your workflow is to go into options>keyboard shortcuts and midi triggers (alt+ K on windows) and asign your own keyboard short cuts. This really sppeds things up for me.

    could be bothered fixing spellngi

What does soundforge do? I use sony acid for my beat makin & i thought id give soundforge a try after it was mentioned in another thread. Other than a few vst plugins it jus seems very similar to acid but not as good & it screwed up my version of acid too so i ended up uninstalling it! I jus record straigt to acid from vinyl so am i missing out on any benefits by not using soundforge??

sound forge is a straight wave recorder and editor. Acid is a sequencing and multi tracking program.

If you aren't using soundforge or some other wave editor to edit and save your wave files properly, chances are you are getting about 1% of the value out of Acid's utilities. You're basically just using it as a pallette to record direct sound to and then chop it up and move it around. You probably aren't utilizing the loop/tempo functions, which is what the program was basically designed for. I would maybe check out some tutorials on Soundforge and Acid and see what you could really be doing with the software. Try youtube. Good luck.
