  • I haven't had high expectations for new Scorcese flicks in a minute (aside from that catholic priests in Japan film he's got lined up), and though I enjoyed Infernal Affairs, I never really understood the need for a remake from a director of Scorcese's stature. That said, the reviews for Departed have been pretty great (saying it's his best since Goodfellas, and so forth).

But yeah, even average Scorcese tends to be "better than anything else out right now."

yeah im about to catch this tommorrow during the matinee...

i enjoyed the HK version so im looking forward to this. but it begs the question, why the sudden need to remake asian films? i hear even oldboy and my sassy girl are being redone for the american audiences. do americans lack the creativity to think up new plots scripts that they have to 'cover' foreign films?

either which way, i hope its good.

  • It's definitely his best joint since Casino.
I liked it. Yeah, he took the template of Infernal Affairs but he made it his own.
I liked the whole Whitey Bulger angle and Jack definitely ran with it.
Everyone did their thing in it.
Was not expecting to see Ray Winstone though.
    He killed it!

because Hollywood is TOTALLY out of ideas right now. See: remake of Porky's WTF? And the seventeen Ocean's Eleven remakes in the works. Pathetic.

    i hear even oldboy

I know we have some fanboys on here, but no thanks on this movie. Depressing and not really even that fresh visually in my opinion. NO NEED to remake.

I will see Departed because there isn't shit else and the OG was pretty good.

But damned if Matt Damon doesn't annoy the hell out of me. Is there anyone on here that actually goes to movies just to see this guy? Does there exist such thing as a "Matt Damon fan" outside of the female population?

Plaese to refer yourself to the box office returns for the two Bourne films.

To quote I>40 Year Old Virgin[/i]: "he's rocking the shit out of this one."

(But yeah, I wouldn't go to see a film just b/c Matt Damon is in it)

yeah but if you read the books you'll see those are just great plots. Damon does not a fresh movie make. matter of fact those jawns were alright IN SPITE of Damon.

man, if this shit really has the paul nice seal of approval on it, i might actually have to watch it. i was thinking it looked like hot garbage from the previews and who they casted for the roles...

  • MATT DAMON

Not a big fan of him either, but at least josh hartnett isn't in this movie.

I'm definatley looking foward to checking The Departed this weekend.

Scorsese has an iffy track record when it comes to big budget films. I think the only way studios will give him the kind of budget he needs for his films is if he packs them with stars.

    Hey Cahoots,

    Thx for the hook-ups tonight.

I still liked it, but I'm still a bigger fan of the OG.

The dark humour was tops. Everyone put in a pretty good performance.

    Thx again!

    Aser, where were you?

dude I was there, I tried looking for the oldest dude in zee room but instead I found the grey haired usher. Oh well, next time, perhaps time for another meal. Btw, what was up w/ the ultra tight security by Warner Bros? The movie comes out tomorrow, not 3 months down the road.

Those chairs are the death of me btw, my tailbone is killing me. Haaah, I'm old.

***references to direct bites from IA to the departed***

Wahlberg had some choice zingers, the dynamic between him and Baldwin were stellar as comic relief. DiCaprio really impressed me w/ his range, the collective gasp during the elevator scene was a good indicator of the empathy developed by the audience. Whereas Damon is basically his usual self, unspectacular but passibly watchable. I felt the ending was a bit too clean for my liking, but then again I couldn't expect them to condense IA3 into the last 10 minutes of the movie.

I do think it was their intentions to de-stylize the HK flash of the original (rooftop, elevator, etc). Considering the shift in locale, I felt it was fitting. Pimp glass reflections would've looked oddly out of place. I'm glad the "envelope" was kept in the script, one of those minute details that made IA so enjoyable.

One thing they expanded upon is the role of the psychiatrist. It was woefully underdeveloped in the IA trilogy, a rather tepid excuse to throw a bankable HK popstar (Sammi Cheng) into the mix. Probably the most surprising element of the script.

It also seemed the majority of the crowd walked into the film "blind". You're not missing much if you don't catch IA2 & 3, but IA 1 is essential viewing for fans of "the departed". Matter of fact I'm going to rewatch all 3 this weekend. IA2 is the weak link in the chain IMO.

Again thanks to w*l$0n for the heads up, very much appreciated. Let me know what you think of the dvd.

goddamn, looks like I missed an awesome leaf game, haaaah.

The psychiatrist in IA is played by Kelly Chan, another disposable pop star. Sammi Cheng plays Andy Lau's fiancee. But they are all disposable pop star nonetheless.

Gonna check out The Departed this weekend. Rooftop scene is in the US remake, no? I'm interested because as I am typing this, I am just a couple of floors below the roof where the infamous rooftop scene in Infernal Affair was shot.

oops, I messed that up. Actually, thinking about it, not really. The psychiatrist in The Departed is an amalgamation of the two female characters (sammi & kelly). You'll see what I mean once you watch it.

Kelly Chan is actually pretty damn tall for a hk girl, she also went to parsons if I remember correctly.

yup, rooftop scene is in there, minus a lot of the flash though.

I'm not a "fan," but I actually don't mind Damon at all.
I think he is usually good in just about anything and doesn't
draw so much attention to himself that he ruins movies, like other
actors of his talent or lack thereof. The Bourne movies are
really good, and I disagree that anyone could have done them, plenty
of actors could have ruined them. Damon was also really good in Talented
Mr. Ripley, not an easy role at all. Maybe it's cause he's local, but I
ain't mad at him and will usually give his movies a chance.

Except for that golf one. Jeezus...

And I actually wasn't hating his take on My Funny Valentine either.

I thought Kelly Chen dropped out of Parsons about 10 or 12 years ago. But I could be wrong.

    HA,

Did you see them searching people during the movie?

And yeah, I thought DiCaprio did a great job. But WTF was with that shit in Blood Diamond? I think everyone in the theater laughed when he first spoke in the trailer.

    Finally saw this last night.

Was enjoyable though, as mentioned above, not as tight as the original. I enjoyed some of the nods to Infernal Affairs and thought Leo did a sterling job in the shared lead. Hell of a cast overall and I'm liking new fatty baldwin.

Regarding the soundtrack it did seem to miss the normal uniqueness of a Scorsese movie and, maybe it was just the levels in the cinema I watched it in, the blending of music from scene to scene seemed jarringly inept at certain points.

Still, thought it was entertaining and worth seeing.

looks like yet another brilliantly filmed and acted ode to white male machismo and power hoarding.
great, thats just what the world needs more of right now,
    more empty violent bullshit.

real heady stuff, full of thought inspiring tropes and imagery

we get to see Jack Nicholson as an Alpha male crime boss,a real big streach for him as an actor and human being.
    predictable at best

Instead of using the well mined new york italian mafioso stereotypes, scorcese shifted the players to Boston substituting Irish cops/criminals.
    so what was learned?
    who was enlightened?

did you walk away from the theatre with more knowledge of self and life?
    same shit different movie
i'd rather watch march of the penguns or crocodile hunter reruns

I think kala's view is valid as the next man's. In fact I feel the same way about several of Scorsese's movies. Like when I saw "Goodfellas" for the first time (not too long ago actually - waaaaay late). I just thought "Was that it? This is what everyone rates as a masterpiece?". It just left me completely indifferent. Is it really that forbidden to suggest that a Scorsese flick could be hot poop and that the overall M.O. in his conceptual arc is tired?

And I'm not mad at Matt Damon either. He's OK by me. I will not, however, pay good money to see a movie starring the claymation substitute known as Mark Walberg. He gets a pass for "Boogie Nights", but other than that, yukk.

It's not that ur not "entitled" to your own opinion. It's just the amount of snobbery coming from your post.

    1. You haven't even seen the film. You are basically reading the back cover of a novel and shit talking the book.

    2. Have you seen the original? I'm guessing you haven't.

    3. It's a big budget film. If ur looking for life exploration, the meaning of life & art from a Hollywood movie. I'd suggest maybe you stick to going to small film festivals.
