    i haven't seen it
read the plot and current press reviews

looks like yet another brilliantly filmed and acted ode to white male machismo and power hoarding.
great, thats just what the world needs more of right now,
    more empty violent bullshit.

real heady stuff, full of thought inspiring tropes and imagery

    Get over yourself.

    please to go fu#k yourself

lets marvel at these dumb working class white guys shooting each other
trust me accordian i'm over it

Ouch! Did I strike a chord?

The Departed is one of the best movies I've seen in a while along with Science of Sleep. My tastes know no bounds.

I liked it. Wasn't CRAZY about it but then again I wasn't CRAZY about IA.

Scorsese is always going to be Scorsese. Top of the heap. HOWEVER I doubt he'll win the Oscar he deserves for this one. If he does it will be a sympathy win.

I gotta say that I'm not a fan of Leo but I think he's a really good, if not great actor. Aser was right about the collective gasp at the elevator scene. He really struck a chord with the audience.

Matt Damon, I can take him or leave him but I actually do like him (and think he's good) when he does the Boston bit. Plus, with the other Bostonian in the cast Mark Wahlberg in the fray (and I think he's EXCELLENT) it definitely was a plus.

And anything with Alec Baldwin gets a pass with me.

  • why don't people like matt damon??

i actually thought he would have been more convincing in dicaprio's role, but he was still convincing as the bad guy. walberg was hilarious, but maybe a little too much. his scenes felt a little forced and made the movie less realistic. dude was just too sharp and witty to be believable.

my only other complaint was that i hated all of the scenes with the psychiatrist. i realize she added to the theme of the movie, but the bottom line was that she made the movie less interesting.

still, i def would recommend this movie to anyone.

we get to see Jack Nicholson as an Alpha male crime boss,a real big streach for him as an actor and human being.
    predictable at best

Instead of using the well mined new york italian mafioso stereotypes, scorcese shifted the players to Boston substituting Irish cops/criminals.
    so what was learned?
    who was enlightened?

did you walk away from the theatre with more knowledge of self and life?
    same shit different movie
i'd rather watch march of the penguns or crocodile hunter reruns

Look at you, playin yourself like Billy Batts....

Are you done with my Van Hammersley tapes yet?

    I need em back....

  • IMHO: Departed is just ok. Goodfellas is the best modern day gangster flick and Casino is very good. in Departed all the acting is cool except Leo. He was the butter knife and Nicholson (for the first time in decades?) was the machete. and that rolling stones song scorcese used from let it bleed he already used all over Goodfellas.

the second best modern day gangster film may be "State Of Grace", also about Irish thugs--the westies in Hell's Kitchen--and stars Sean Penn, Gary Oldman, Ed Harris and John Turturro. it's a solid rental if you like gritty street sh*t.

hell I loved that movie... that was the first movie to get me to actually go to the theatre and spend money on a movie in over a year.

Jack Nicholson was completely on point, and Alec Baldwin was perfect. Also Martin sheen was cool too een though he kind of melted into the background.

And while the storyline wasn't the most amazing plot in the world, I thought it was extremely engaging, especially the dialogue. I put it in the same category as say Scarface.

I don't understand all the hate on Matt Damon though? I mean Ben Affleck is understandable, just pretty much a mediocre to poor actor. But I don't really remember him being in a bad role? I thought he was good for almost every role that I can remember seeing him in, including The Departed. Adn i regards to the Bourne Identity series... I really don't think that most people knew those were books before they hit, and if they did I would put money on the fact that most people that saw the movies never read the books... just sayin.

Leo is one of those actors that simply doesn't "work" in the roles he's given. I think it's simply because he doesn't have much range. If the role works within his rather limited range he's amazing. I think The Departed was one of those films.

    Gary Oldman

Now there's someone with a lot of range! I wish he'd work with Scorsese sometime. Easily one of the greatest living actors today.

regarding 'the departed' i enjoyed the film and was definitely entertained through the 2.5 hours, but walking away from it, i had major problems, particularly with teh plot points. a lot of the big events in the film seemed to be 'DEUS EX MACHINA.'

    spoilers -

the ending sucked. that other crooked cop dude came out of nowhere, and was like, oh yeah, i'm teamed up with the bad guys too. i'll just shoot leo in teh face.
same with the crack head who told leo that jack was working with the feds.

also, did anyone else pick up on leo's entire motivation?
jack's first murder (the couple at the beach) was leo's uncle jackie.

these issues have been bugging me while everyone else seems to have nothing but praises

A theory I've seen floating around and actually makes some sense to me: Costello is gay. Kinda fits in with his accosting of the Catholic priests, plus his girlfriend's remark that she's going to "straighten him out" as she prepares to either blow him or ride the pony. Ultimately, it doesn't really mean much...but it does throw in another wrinkle.

At any rate, I thought this was a quality flick. DiCaprio was really good, Damon was surprisingly on point, Alec Baldwin was dope, Wahlberg had all the best lines, and even Anthony Anderson managed to not be his usual annoying self.

I did hate the final shot, though. That was like some ham-fisted film school shit.

I don't know what you're referring to as I heven't seen this yet. But that comment reminds me of the last shot in Goodfellas where they show Joe Pesci (who was killed off at least 30 minutes earlier in the film) shooting a gun at the camera with Sid Vicious' "my way" playing in the background. Always bothers me to see that. It comes off real ghetto.

That's actually a reference to an old silent film called The Great Train Robbery in which a character fires directly into the screen. The myth is that the audience thought they were actually being shot at and fled the theater. Understand that at this time (1903) the concept of motion picture was still brand new and I'm sure much of the audience had never been to a movie before.

thanks for these. i missed all of them, but assumed the couple at the beach had some relevance. when did the crackhead tip off leo to jack working for the feds? i was confused when matt damon shot him, but i'm guessing leo told damon?

damn. i feel like i saw a different movie. my weak excuse for being in the dark is that these a-holes behind me were talking during all the previews and i then spent the next two hours thinking about whether i should have said something.

It's not worth it. People will talk. I posted a thread a while back about my experience with cell phone talkers during Miami Vice. Fucking ruined it. Shitty movie that it may be. Now if I see a movie during opening night I'm very careful about which theater I see it in.

i should note that i'm the only person i've spoken with realized this, so i could be mistaken, but i don't think i'm just making it up. martin sheen mentioned something to leo during his introductory interview about how they found his uncle and wife capped at the beach near the airport, and you can see a plane fly by in the background after jack shoots the couple.
it adds another dynamic to leo's character, but on another level, it bugs me because they never touch on the subject again. this was leo's entire motivation for joining the cops and taking down jack, but they mention it so little that barely anyone picked up on it.

Regarding the soundtrack it did seem to miss the normal uniqueness of a Scorsese movie and, maybe it was just the levels in the cinema I watched it in, the blending of music from scene to scene seemed jarringly inept at certain points.

yeah right?! there were some really bad points where the music would overlap at weird parts of the movie. sloppy style...

but baldwin killed in that shit.

"alirght, good job. let's go have a smoke. well you probably don't smoke do you? what are some kind of fitness nut? faggot."

No. Matt Damon's character walked away as the unscathed so that the filmmakers can milk 2 more sequels from it (which I believe some elements were incorporated in The Departed).

  • thought this movie sucked.....it dragged for too long.
shitty portrayl of anything closley resembling whitey bulger and crew.
love the rolling stones but...cmon already.
