whats your favorite knot for a tie

i had to wait for record day to expire before posting this, but ya, what's your favorite knot for a tie? entering a corporate dressed workplace, i had to buy a bunch of ties, and the only knot im familiar with is the one i did in highschool...only for the sake of convenience. my pops had these ties with skinny skinny knots, in my opinion NAGL, but neither is those fat assed jay-z ones. what else is out there? ps: i feel like a chump asking this, but are there any tutorials on how to tie the variations?

    Classic four-in-hand. It was cool that the full Windsors came back into vogue (although without an extra long tie that schitt will look like a little boy's clip-on), but nothing beats your basic four-in-hand.

    I prefer a half windsor...

    Google "how to tie a tie" and you'll get a number of tutorials for each knot

    you shouldn't feel like a chump, i was just thinking about this today because i'm preparing for my sister's wedding. i was wondering what kind of knot to go with. and what is currently a good look. i have a slim, solid, maroon-ish tie.

    i found the link below to be a nice resource with several different options...but i'm still not sure. anyone who has some more input, that would be appreciated.

    half windsor...

    Depends on the collar though. Half windsors look nice with a spread collar but four in a hands look best with like a button-down collar.

    Full windsor, cutaway/spread collar. The key is to use the right tie, that is one which is somewhat narrower than what's currently fashionable. It's an incredibly elegant style.

    Botton collars with a tie is, in my opinion, not a good look.

    nah i think they're a great look, with a loose tie, not a professional look, but i like it...has to be a dark shirt, like black or navy blue with white buttons

    half windsor...

    Depends on the collar though. Half windsors look nice with a spread collar but four in a hands look best with like a button-down collar.

    Much like pleated khakis, the "best" look when it comes to button-down collars is to simply avoid them.

    Button-downs are acceptable for the avuncular, "Come tug the beard" look of your local, sartorial professor.

    yea, you should never wear a black shirt and a tie unless you are going to a soprano's casting call. as for buttoned-down shirts, they aren't my style but there is nothing wrong with them.

    When I was 12 my mom let my step dad take me to get some nice cloths for a bat mitzvah I was going to for a classmate. My step father has the fashion sense of a sapranos extra. He got me a black shirt and pants and a white tie and suspenders. When my mom saw she just started laughing but it was the day of and I had to wear it.

    Unless you're an entertainer and you're going over the top for a stage appearance or something, this is not going to work.

    Perhaps in the art world, but in the real world, while you wouldn't be escorted out, you would be a distraction--people would be covertly laughing at you, rather than listening to anything you have to say.

    But what we're really quibbling over here is the appropriateness of it, not whether or not it looks good, which is what the discussion is supposed to be about, and there are all kinds of bizarre things that might be appropriate at a runway show that just don't look good. Black shirts + ties are one of them.

    Hey I deal with corporate types all day... they're New Yorkers, but I think most of them would view a black shirt + tie as crossing the line from "sartorial flair" to "costumery"

    i disagree with faux. aside from being inappropriate, the black shirt/tie combo is just .

    however, you have inspired my halloween costume for this year. i think i am gonna go as one of those former musician/rocker types who never made it and now gives music lessons to kids. my outfit will consist of black jeans and chuck taylors, along with a black dress shirt and one of these ties:

    Also, when I was in law school, here in Manhattan, I had a professor that used to come in dressed like he thought he was a gangster--black shirts under his suits all day. The unanimous consensus amongst the class of 100 was that he was a clown.
