I might have a mix show slot on the local big "urban" radio station..and this is the type of stuff I want to play. I have a good bit..but I know you dudes could compile a nasty list. It cant really be too obscure since it mainstream radio..you know..the "No Parking on tHE Floot",Prince,Clinton, etc etc etc..the shit 30-40+ yr old black listeners will dig...you get the drift. no raer needed. how about a list (maybe compiled on another site) to remind me of the jammy jams that I am forgetting. I am getting a demo set together and wanting to purchase more of this just for this opportunity. Thanks in advance..Hux

Just play good vintage music without swear words. It'll work, trust the force.

But to be on the safe side:

    Blackbyrds
    Black Heat
    Black Ivory
    J Blackfoot
    Black Merda
    James Brown

    I'm sure there's more

The one thing with these sets is the lack of "curveballs".
I find people can get a little bored when 10 songs in a row are
straight classics. I would lace the set with 2 kinda unknowns/Bsides from
big albums just to prevent it from becoming "Name That Tune".
Im not tellin' ya how to dj though.

  • good thread..i'm DJ-ing at a birthday party on Saturday night and the birthday girl wants strictly 70's and 80's grooves so this is helping me out too thanks. Here are some tunes i had in mind for my set:

    Teena Marie - Square biz
    Vaughn Mason - Bounce,Rock,Skate
Positive Force - we got the funk
Slave - Just a touch of love/watching you
Chaka Khan - I know you, I live you/I'm every woman/I feel for you
Shannon - let the music play
Keni Burke - risin to the top
Luther Vandross - never too much
Hall & Oates - I cant go for that
Michael Jackson - PYT /Rock with you
Prince - I wanna be your lover
Cheryl Lynn - To be real
McFadden & Whitehead - aint no stopping us now
Esther Williams - last night changed it all
    D-Train - Keep on
    Billy Ocean - Nights
    Convertion - sweet thing
    Bobby Byrd - Hot Pants
    Phreek - weekend
    Freeez - Southern Freeez
    Blondie - Rapture
    Womack & Womack - teardrops

Yes yes yes. They don't need to be raers, just not super obvious. Nobody wants their set to sound like one of those best of cd compilations from an infomercial. I think this is a good rule for all djing come to think of it. Most of the lists people have posted contain a track or two that could fit this description, but I guess it depends on the age group. Older heads will know more of the music you are playing, so you might go more obscure than with a younger audience.

It terms of classics though, I highly recommend Raw Silk "Do it to the music," Unlimited Touch "When I Hear Music in The Streets," and always D-Train

Ive got a spare of the laidback lp danish press with the original mix of white horse
which is shorter but much better imo....if you should need one.

Speaking of Cheryl Lynn, as someone did, I recently found "Instant Love".
    Massive 80s luther soul!

Denroy Morgan: "I'll Do Anything For You"
Yaz: "State Farm" ------ CRIMINALLY SLEPT ON
Cybotron: "Clear" (especially in light of the new Missy joint)
    Rick James: "Fire It Up"
Tasha Thomas: "Shoot Me With Your Love"
    Twilight 22: "Electric Kingdom"

I just got these albums and all have tracks that should work:

    Junie: 5
    Candi Staton: CHANCE
    Skyy: SKYYLINE

    so many more...

Sharon Redd "Can You Handle It" (the long 12-inch version) is a disco bomb, and not too obvious IMO. Don't have myself though, but I'm looking for it. I've only got it on a comp where the tracks are blended (disco-style) and it sucks for playing out

The long version keeps the groove going forever
