And if this is not hitting home with some people here, I'll sketch it in terms that might be more understandable: You will still be able to buy rare records on eBay, but you WILL NOT be able to brag about it online anymore.

Fuck you. some of us have invested everything they have in making a living using free internet. Take the I won't win so I won't fight position on this if you want. You are a bitch for doing so. Take your jokes to your site.

    wow - touchy.

I think a lot of us here have quite a bit invested in the interenet as it works now. Not just you.

Yeah, dude! Go back to your own site with those lame jokes. People on soulstrut are about serious political action! That's why this thread will surely get more views and replies than the "Solo Face" thread! (No disrespect, A*dr*y!)

Don't even joke about SOLO FACE - I know people who know people who know where you live!

for the record, i post lame jokes on both waxidermy and soulstrut.

hold up... my landlord just knocked on the door to tell me he wants 10 times what I currently pay for rent. And, after all, I AM NOT ENTITLED TO an affordable roof over my head...

What?! You are NOT entitled to an affordable roof over your head either. You will pay whatever the landlord asks you to pay or you will move out and find a new landlord.

Is this not how it works where you live?

    A more important issue is:

Do you think the US Government is going to censor free speach on the internet (Y/N)?

It's not the type of question you are making it out to be. It's not an issue of yes or no or when. It's far more elaborate than that, and it's already going on. "Subversive websites" have been shut down, or scared with lawsuites into shutting themselves down. This happened with a website that was trying to distribute information on electronic voting a few years ago. But you'll always be able to type "fuck" as much as you like.

The idea is that after this goes through, they won't need to. Only major cooperations will have the money to pay for a website that can handle a signifigant level of traffic. These corporations are the only groups that will be able to have their views widely distributed. Everyone else will still be able to say whatever they want, but no one will hear.

Well, you have not provided any convincing proof that whatever the "this" is that you are afraid of will come to pass, or that if it did it would signficantly change how we use the internet, or that 'soul strut is in danger'.

A few years from now the internet will be faster than cheaper than ever and you'll use it the same way you do now.

OK I have to do some work now or else I won't be able to afford any internets.

If "this" is going to happen, I hope that there will be some hackers with superpowers to give them corporations a hard time...something like e-bombing, where u got throwups suddenly appearing on the wallmart site would be cool....fo real, this is really a mess and we all have to be worried...

So, in your personal experience, when large corporations are free to set market prices as they see fit, they generally opt for a pricing structure that benefits the consumer.

At first I thought you were deluded. Now I see you are stupid. Or maybe you are another sadadaba alias.

"This" is the Net Neutrality Bill that is winding through congress now.

How this would put soulstrut in danger has been detailed repeatedly in this thread and in greater detail through links in this thread.

    Please learn to read.

As for internet being faster and cheaper sounds like the lies they used to sell us Cds. We were told they would hold 8 hours worth of music, have better sound than records, be cheaper than records (they are on the wholesale level, too bad for us chumps who pay retail) and they would be indestructible.

Your CD analogy is not valid. The technology of CDs, has followed the same trend as Moore's Law.. the capacity continues to increase while the price goes down over time. This is irrefutable. CDs.. DVDs..Dual Layer DVD... Blu-Ray DVD.. see how the capacity per $ goes up over time?

You can not use a recorded CD as an analogy to bandwidth prices. You are paying for the content on the CD, not the CD itself.

Of course recorded CD's are not going to get cheaper over time, you are paying for the overhead of the entire music studio plus their profits. I couldn't argue with you that commercial audio CD's are a rip-off. I think they are the biggest rip-off I can think off but that has no relevance to the fact that that internet bandwidth WILL get faster and faster and cost less over time.

I wanted to avoid breaking it down and showing my age but you don't seem to believe me. Maybe you never saw an analog modem before. It started with 300 baud, 1200 baud, 2400, 4800, 28.8k, 56k, 56K "shotgun" , ISDN, DSL, Cable.. and soon, fiber optics. Right?? Do you really think it's getting slower and costing more over time?

On this sinister bill that you speak of - if you really believe it will pass and that it will cause some harm to come to soul strut, that's your prerogative.

Personally, I don't believe it. We'll have to wait and see what happens right?
Then I'll either be right or wrong.

I am sorry, I totally misread your posts. I thought you not only supported the net neutrality bill, but you thought it was the right of the corporate gate keepers to do whatever they wanted.

This is some scary stuff, but I think the only thing that can be done is for everyone who doesn't agree with this net facism is to take their site off-shore.

It seems the corporations don't care about logic and the politicians have no concept of what it is, so EVERYONE who has a site should take it and their money off shore. Money is the only thing these swine care about, so hit them where it hurts!

It's funny to me, because time and time again the bigger corporations have slept on the internet and its opportunities, and now they want to make $$$$ by simply changing the rules. Also, I think the telco's and ISP's may be in for a shock, because the net is mostly made up of small and medium sized companies, who hopefully will be unwilling to pay their prices.

a number of people have said so what we can't do anything. This is a common soulstrut complaint, the politicians do whatever they want and we have no voice.

    SENIORS!

The largest voting block in the USA is seniors. Seniors have:
    1) Universal single payer health care. you dont.
    2) A new (fucked up) prescription program. you dont.
    3) Guaranteed (poverty level) income. you dont.
    4) Discounted mass transit prices. you dont.
    5) Federally funded programs to support Independence like Meals On Wheels. (MOW is not for poor people, anyone (mostly seniors) who need delivered meals to live on their own qualifies.) you dont.

Why do seniors have these benefits? Because they vote, and you don't; sucker.

If internet users were a major voting block this would not be an issue.

Actually, LaswerWolf's analogy was spot on and you missed it (even though it was right under your nose). Yes, CDs cost more because of content, while the CDs themselves become cheaper. So there's no argument that despite CDs becoming cheaper to produce, the recording industry has continued to raise prices.

Providing broadband internet access will likely be no different. Despite the decrease in bandwidth cost and increase in capability, consumers and content providers will still be hit with higher and higher bills.

I think you're lacking a fundamental understanding of how corporations work. They are bound by law to earn their shareholders more money. They have no such obligation to save consumers money. Who do you think they're going to favor?
