You're right I would be pissed, but at the same time I'd be like "shit, it's not like I handled it right to begin with". I would just take my lumps and maybe even be a little flattered that they thought my efforts where worthy of being copied.

i think its a lil bit different than just getting bootlegged as the packaging was changed. it would be more like someone getting a hold of your mix and repackaging it with their name on it. i am of the opinion that artists shouldnt be paid for use of their songs on a mix though. comp, reissue, of course. but just a mixtape?? naw thats promotion homie
Well, what is really the difference between a "mixtape" that is packaged and sold in record shops and a "comp"? Not much. I think it all comes down to how widely it's distributed and how much money is made off it. It's definitely a grey area, but you can't just use the logic that "mixtapes are hip hop and you don't have to pay unless you call it a comp", which seems like what you're saying. That said, this Dante thing is a whole different can of worms - it reminds me of stealing another kids homework, erasing their name, writing your own on it and turning it in for credit.

If it really is just for promotion then I think it's ethically justifiable - but, if it's making you a decent amount of money and being widely sold then it really does not matter if you play the songs backwards on the CD - it's still someone elses music.

If you are using someone's existing music to make a profit then it is ethically right to pay for it. It doesn't matter how creative you think you are being with it.

The waxidermy mixes are not being sold to make a profit. There is no money made from them to compensate anyone. They are sold to A. pay for themselves being made, and B. to keep the site online. We are beginning work on a comp that will be pressed in greater quantity and we are going to ask permission to use tracks and pay for them if a profit is made.

It seemed to me you were holding some moral high ground that Chains and Black Exauhst made enough profit to make licensing worthwhile. It's ok for you to release comps without paying the artists when it pays for your toys and license stuff on bigger releases right? Why is this not ok in Dante's case. If this has nothing to do with C&BE, forgive me for misconstruing the abstract ideas in your head.
