Does anyone know about some CD (and perhaps even vinyl) making the rounds in NYC called Blow To My Soul: 16 Garage Funk Hits?Apparently this is an EXACT burn (with a different, porno cover) of my Chains & Black Exhaust mix from several years ago and is being sold around the East Coast.Whoever is behind this is really, really unimaginative and needs to fall way, way back into the sad hole from which they sprang. Please boycott this, the ultimate biter item, with fervor.

Mega weak.
If you want the URL Dante, PM me.
unimaginative does not come close to describing.
Yeah, if you're gonna rip off the next dude's mix-CD at least bootleg it with cheap Kinko's color copying like they didwith the Brainfreeze joints. Changing the name is just cowardly. Though I have to say - this is pretty wild, all things considered.
Very fucking weak.
haha that's ridiculous.
"I say we go get the motherfucker"
that is just pathetic. On a sidenote-It seems I've missed out on this and would actually like to obtain a copy of the Chains & Black Exhaust mix if possible? Any help Dante? Dave?
I got nothing but respect for your dig-abilities but how mad can you get? I mean did you license and/or attempt to get a hold of the dudes on the comp and break them off a little cash/royalites? I definetly would be pissed if I got my mixtapes bootleg but I mean it's not the music was mine to begin with.
I'm really not trying to be a dick here, I'm just suprised no one has mentioned this yet. Maybe I'm wrong...but yo.
Where's that 5 pager graemlin?
does this not answer your own question?
D said it right--it's unimaginitive. It's the direct biting of one's selection of music. It's especially weak when some time and focus went into that selection.
I'm with Phonics on this, not so much that you give royalties from a mix, but that you should expect as much.
They know they're chumps, is not that satisfaction enough?
K.
I knew it was only a matter of time. very fryermantis of you!
I'm just a little aghast at how fucking unimaginative and weak people can be.
I mean just boot the thing straight up, don't change its clothes and try to front like it's your shit.
The Chains CD is no different from Soul Boulders or Trap Door Mystery Mix, and those are mixes that are "sold" just the same.
i think its a lil bit different than just getting bootlegged as the packaging was changed. it would be more like someone getting a hold of your mix and repackaging it with their name on it. i am of the opinion that artists shouldnt be paid for use of their songs on a mix though. comp, reissue, of course. but just a mixtape?? naw thats promotion homie
word.
that is interesting, was it by the artists request.
i guess i think about it in "hip hop" terms. ya know im not gonna send clipse a couple of bucks because i wanna use their grindin instrumental.
seriously.....where is the "take that shit to fryermantis" graemlin?
wow..wait because I questioned Dante?
no no no.....there was a big ass thread over there about...well....forget it, i'd rather not bring it here.
but no, was just a comment on the topic. thats all.
what?
Well, the download of C&BE that was going around SS a few months
ago actually has the files named except for the few unknowns, so
they probably made their boot from a download and used that info.
And by the way, although this is IN NO WAY meant to justify or
excuse this biting - I am definitely of the mind that to jack
someone's well-respected mix and sell it as your own is incredibly
weak and pathetic - one clue as to why this would have been done
in the first place is RIGHT HERE
Just a suggestion - maybe you should bring it back yourself, Dante?
Press up another couple hundred more copies and beat 'em at their own game?
There's obviously interest in it.
I just sensed that your response was on some "HE"S MY CHI CITY DUDE! I"M STICKING UP FOR HIM"..but really it's more me funin' than anything.
For better and for worse, packaging provides context, and it intrigues me (much as I'm sure it may disgust you, Dante) that--while those that got theirs honest had their listening colored by the attendant cabalistic motorsickle bad-vibe--this particular bootleg may beget a group of folks that view all of the material on the disc through the lens of some hot-pink sex shit.
MAKES MY HEART
BEATS A LITTLE FASTER
hope you manage to track down the dickhead(s) responsible.
what a pathetic move.
Well, what is really the difference between a "mixtape" that is packaged and sold in record shops and a "comp"? Not much. I think it all comes down to how widely it's distributed and how much money is made off it. It's definitely a grey area, but you can't just use the logic that "mixtapes are hip hop and you don't have to pay unless you call it a comp", which seems like what you're saying. That said, this Dante thing is a whole different can of worms - it reminds me of stealing another kids homework, erasing their name, writing your own on it and turning it in for credit.
Stepper's classic, right there. And the twelve-inch goes for some coin, too.
I understand completely.
But I am the type to look forward rather than back.
