Things You Won’t Catch Me...

I thought this would be a fun exercise...I'd be interested in reading your responses to the same categories.

LISTENING TO[/b]

-Any artist that's appeared on the cover of SPIN in the last year (except for pre- Achtung Baby U2)
-Cowboy Troy

DOING FOR MONEY[/b]

-Pornography
-Stripping
-Anything involving a costume

SAYING[/b]

-"Cause I ain't no hollaback girl"
-"Nigga"
-"I'm Rick James, bitch!"
-"AYO" and/or "no homo"
-"Is that a reissue?"

READING[/b]

Much to faux's chagrin, there is very little I won't read (ie, I'm not a very selective reader)...I used to read the back of the cereal box when I was little because my mom wouldn't let me bring books to the table. You probably won't see me picking up Mein Kampf, most celebrity autobiographies, or the Bible anytime soon, though.

WATCHING[/b]

This is a tough one since my television viewing is very limited, due to the conspicuous absence of an electronic system of transmitting transient images of fixed or moving objects together with sound over a wire or through space by apparatus that converts light and sound into electrical waves and reconverts them into visible light rays and audible sound in my current home.

That said, I have never seen nor have any desire to see American Idol, Everybody Loves Raymond, The Apprentice, Joey, or most of the shows that appear on TiVo's Hot 100.

EATING[/b]

-Cooked oatmeal/fufu/tapioca pudding/cream of wheat (the texture of these foods really get my gag reflex going)
-"Organ Meat" eg, tripe, chitlins, liver, etc.
-Cranberry sauce
-Beets
-Fruit-filled pies

Flip TV and Reading around and that's my house. I tend to have a TV, stereo, laptop and book or magazine going all at once. Admittedly I lack focus. I am a more discerning reader, as I prefer non-fiction about subjects I am interested in.
After 6 years I still can't find a pattern to what my wife likes to read, but I still buy her books sorta randomly. And she always reads some of them.

well i don't exaclty follow spin.. but i assumed you were pointing the finger at most so called modern rock bands.. of the ilk mags like spin tends to cover.

    matchbox 20 vs spin

the lameness scale would be hard to judge.. i think the arms would just fall right off on both sides.

They probably don't fancy themselves as such, but MB20 is pretty pop. I was referring to the YeahYeahYeahs, The Darkness, The Pixies, The Hives, The Vines, Morrissey, etc.

I quite agree on all the crap except "The Amazing Race"...I got hooked on that last season(when the Amazing Racists won) and I have to say, if 'reality TV' has any redemtive qualities, Amazing Race embodies all of them, with only a few of the terrible side effects that the genre spreads all day every day.

    In my opinion, great TV.

I really hate period pieces about the upper crust too...I can't grasp the appeal.

i think it's cause every time i've seen the show they're in some country other than their own treating the locals like shit all in the name of this race. it's like rude tourists to the power of 1000. maybe i missed all the good parts once i clicked off.

    LISTENING TO[/b]

    - Madonna. I fucking hate Madonna. I'll just leave it at that, though, because I'll admit that I can look back at similar pronouncements I've made over the years and see that they no longer hold true. "I'll never listen to that crunk shit!" Oops. So check back. Maybe I'll be bumpin' "Borderline" one day.

    DOING FOR MONEY[/b]

    - Giving a record a good review (if it doesn't deserve one), although that'd be one way to make some money writing about music.

    SAYING[/b]

    - "Nigga" (or any variant spelling)
    - "Faggot"
    - "You know, Bush has a point."
    - "My Astros are a lock!"
    - "San Francisco is such a lame little town. Let's move to Portland."

    READING[/b]

    - John Grisham and most modern fiction best-sellers. I used to not be into non-fiction, but I read tons of it these days. Even poorly written non-fiction, as long as the topic interests me (see the East Bay Dragons and Hell's Angels books I've been reading lately).

    WATCHING[/b]

I wish I could front like I don't watch TV, but I must admit that I enjoy its anesthetizing effects. Having said that, I don't fuck with the Lifetime Network or Dr. Phil.

    EATING[/b]

    - Again, not much falls into this category. I eat healthier now than I ever have (read: fewer items in my diet are preceeded by the adjective "chicken-fried"), but I'll still eat damn near anything. What I won't eat is squab (pigeon); as a general rule, I don't eat things that shit on my car.

I read some story in Essence or Black Enterprise about Chip and Kim. The article was about the strength of their marriage despite the financial hardfalls they experienced (ie, "Chip's broke ass needs to give up on this 'acting' thing and get a J-O-B," then, "We were victims of the dot com bust and shady friends! How are we going to feed our kids?).
