His body of work is too small for him to be considered in the best conversation despite his contributions to Critical Breakdown.

Im a BIG Ultra fan and acknowledge how he+Ced-Gee changed the game, but there are too many producers out there above him that impacted the game for a longer amount of time.

He's second of third tier IMO when looking at the entirety of Hip Hop.

Now u could say that he influenced Public Enemy to create Nations, and his underlying influence is felt w/ Large Professor/Main Source but I still cant place him at the same table as Marley Marl, DJ Screw, and Dr. Dre.

On the real, I feel like white boys prop him up due to his skin color. Great yes. Best....step back.

plus Stezo, Super Lover Cee/Casanova Rud & much more all by the time he was murdered at the age of just 24, a baby! Taught Large Professor all he knows aswell. Did more then most by 24

btw, couldn't care less what colour his skin was, dope is dope

I dont care if he got murdered at 24 in this context...were talkin about his ART.

    Measure his work against others.

Scott La Rock & J.Dilla, or or any other deceased Hip Hop artist shouldn't be overrated because they died "young".

Also, most of the Let the Rhythm Hit 'Em LP, which is Eric B & Rakim's finest. But really, his legacy isn't his discography so much as it is the production techniques he pioneered, along with his engineering skills.

  • Yeah, I'd say he deserves credit most for some super knockin engineering. He's not really in this contest though. I'm sure plenty of producers grabbed impeach from super lover cee and skull snaps from Stezo because of his engineering.

I'd say bomb squad and Premier have to be short listed. They worked well with more than one group or artist. I love Prince Paul, but for the most part you'd just be judging De La records. Large Professor. Q-tip.

I still think bomb squad and Dj premier for overall accomplishments. They aren't necessarily
My favorites either. I just think their case could easily be argued.

Agreed with Premier. His work today is still making a big impact plus he has history for days. Overall he's shaped so much of hip hop for so long.

    hahahaha

  • Paul C is like the default "insider" answer but he belongs in a different category of most influential engineers or mentors to producers. How about:
    Quik
    Dre
    Larry Smith
    QTip
    Neptunes
    Timbaland
    Rza
    Muggs
    Kanye
    Manny Fresh
    Diamond
    Rick Rock
    The Dust Brothers
    Kurtis Mantronik
    Organized Noize

Just throwing a few out there. It's always like the same six names in these threads and a ton of regional bias.

  • I'm sure this is such a repetitive subject on the forum, I apologize for beating the dead horse. But I'm new to the site and didn't feel like combing through old threads.

And thank you to all who have responded!

Aww, don't ban me yet! I mean well. Just a young gal looking for a group of music loving people to chit chat with. And to answer your initial question, Off The Wall.

Yup. Discussing new producers (past 10 or so years) would be a nice change.

Big KRIT = my favorite producer RIGHT NOW.

He's doing a great job carrying Pimp C's torch on the country rap tunes tip.

  • Last years producers that caught my attention the most were Alchemist, Harry Fraud, Tommy Mas and Apollo Brown.
