I watched this in room full of sistas..("whoop his ass!)".
And yeah I understand the "Get the whitney back" emotion, yet I felt it was way too obvious in the whipping scene.
Im old enough to have seen the shit done enough, that it wasnt next level. I expected that. There was no twist on it.

Unless your 16 and havent seen endless Blax joints,Roots, etc, I was surprised that my Sista friends were "shocked'.

Like u really thought Sam Jack wasnt gonna get it?

Di Caprio did a very good job. The German dude stole the show IMO. And i liked the side actors. James Remar, the dude who played Boyd Crowder from Justified and Dead Crowder Sr, Don Johnson.

good point i think when he was treading on the blaxploitation side of things it was less succesful than the western nods
waltz was the movie for me

At the theater I went to, I noticed that there were a lot of guys - dads and boyfriends, probably - whispering to the person with them whenever there was some sort of reference, as if they had known what to expect beforehand. Funny shit.

    Yeah good points.
And that Shaw Bros zoom is old.
Maybe normal people who don't recognize it think its cool?
I hope QT does something more original next time around, but I doubt it.

  • I think Spike Lee is a hater, the vast majority of whose movies actually suck (he's about 2-for-50 IMO, and, having revisited it lately, I even include "Do The Right Thing" in the lose column; it's corny as hell; hate me now). And I did like Django. That said, I have no problem with his remarks re: the movie (i.e. that slavery was not a spaghetti western and that "it's disrespectful to [his] ancestors."). Those are totally reasonable reactions to this movie.

    Spike''s remark.

b/w DTRT is better than Django.

  • yeah, I mean if you didn't expect Spike to say something along those lines, well then you were at least unsurprised when he did. obvious, yeah. but I wasn't hearing anyone else on his level saying it, and I was kinda unsettled by how many folks jumped down his throat for doing so is all.

  • DTRT is corn.

i gotta agree with that. poorly written, rushed ending in my opinion. there was some good tension building but everything got very sloppy as soon as the german went rogue and the deal went to hell. bah

lots quality for the first 70% though
loved jamie foxx's expression after his first sip of beer. nice touch.

The bloody shoot out and the end was cartoonish.

I have to check some of the older flicks to see where he was going.
I'd imagine the home release will have some good extras.

going nowhere, i think. just more exploito homage shit.
btw i just watched a QT interview where was talking about Django and how he wanted to make a movie "exploring slavery" and how Django has gotten lots of people talking about slavery.

    LOLWUT

According to Tarantino, his blood gushed scenes are supposed to be cartoonish. Even the most goriest. It's part of his style. I didn't knock the movie because of it, and thought some of it was pretty good in fact.

  • i dont mind the cartoonishness. i actually loved when django shoots the sister and she flies off screen from the blast as if she was getting sucked out of a plane. and the grounded bodies in the lobby continually getting shot over and oer by stray bullets was amusing.
the plot was well written, interesting and somewhat serious until the calvin/shulz showdown. shulz goes completely out of character when victory is in hand. completely out of character. just seemed a way to quickly segue into the bullet fest. not a very imaginative ending from that point on. all super predictable, boring, and unsatisfying as far as vengeance goes (and who wouldnt want to see the slavers comeuppance?). up to that point most of the vengeance seemed well earned. the end was almost like cheating: ok, heres the part where django becomes invincible and quickly kills everybody. boo

were there other leone or corbucci films that had such silly endings?

again, it was a shame, cause i liked the build up to that point and i thought waltz and foxx were great.

  • and Do The Right Thing haters need to escort themselves to the dungeon stat. that movie was masterful

I hope QT does something more original next time around, but I doubt it.

Rumor has it he is going to do a retread of "Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill, Kill!"...which would be a shame.

it would surprise me if QT made as heavy-handed a move as that.

that's pretty much screaming "I AM ATTEMPTING TO RAISE PULP/EXPLOITATION MOVIES TO HIGH ART AND WILL STOP AT NOTHING; PLEASE WATCH!!!"

I would think he'd have the good sense to leave that one alone.

One of the parts that really bothered me about the ending was the whole Django talks his way out of the shit. Being sent to the Mining Company w/ the Australians... Dunno why. But that seemed too easy/lazy and a bullshit way to do it.

As far as Do The Right Thing.

I still ride. In fact, one of the main theaters in my city is playing it in a week or two for $6 and I'm going to check it out again. Tho, they are also playing Infernal Affairs and The Departed back to back on the same day. Not sure if I can do a whole day of movies.

    .

Yeah that was a pretty half-assed way to resolve that issue.

i read an interview and he said Death Proof pretty much cured his itch to do that. I think he's doing Killer Crows next. It will be the third in the IB/DU trilogy. African-American soldiers awol in WWII. Rumor is Depp is interested and some of the Basterds will make cameos.

Like I said, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire movie from beginning to end.

Specifically about the conclusion, Django tried to fight his way out the first time, lost, had his wife taken away, and then got sent to the mining company. I didn't completely buy the way he talked his way out of the mining company scenario, yet at the same time I thought it was plausible. Why would a slave have a wanted poster in his pocket and the three other slaves all said Django was not in bondage. Then he comes back and gets his revenge. Even before he got to Candyland they showed that Django was a dead eye shot and even had a flashback of it to remind the point with the audience. I liked Django telling the black folk to get away from all the white folk, shooting the sister, and Jackson's character meeting his end. This was a western afterall, were you so surprised that there was a big shoot as the finale???!?!?!? I didn't see that as a cop out at all. Were you shocked to see a big samurai fight at the end of Seven Samurai??? It's part of the genre.

The end of Fistfull of Dollars has Eastwood wear a big metal plate underneath his poncho, get shot a bunch of times before he kills the bad guy and rides out of town.

For a Few Dollars More Eastwood and his partner shoot down the gang before there is a finale duel between Eastwood and the bad guy.

Point being, there's a big shoot out before some kind of final confrontation between the two biggies, which is again, a shooting.

P.S. - Fistful of Dollars has a similar finale to Django in that Eastwood tries to confront the bad guys, but fails and almost dies the first time, only to make a comeback and kill all the bad guys the second time.

Maybe my issue was that one minute Django is caught, hanging naked and then after then send him off he's still got the wanted poster? I was surprised they even gave him his clothes back, let alone let him keep the wanted poster... I'm shocked they didn't let him keep a gun or knife or something as well.

Don't get me wrong. I still thought it was a good movie. Just a bit longer than it had to be. Though I'm not sure if that is an issue for me really. Or just that he spent so much time building things up, and then kinda half assed it in the end that the length of the flick seemed longer than it should have felt to me.. There were parts of the end that I enjoyed. Just that most of it felt lacking...

  • motown67motown67 4,513 Posts
I think that's a bit knit picking. They're going to send Django off naked to the mining company? They're going to give him a new set of clothes to send him off to the mining company?
