yeah, I saw him once and he was funny as shit, also REALLY drunk but hilarious. Points taken away for doing that awful King of Queens show though; I guess he's got to pay the bills somehow.
Wanda Sykes - I still have to see that White House Correspondents' Dinner thing
I thought there would have been a thread, perhaps there was.
I watched it and she was pretty good. The "tasteless" stuff she did that everyone got butthurt over was okay, but the stuff about the President playing basketball was really funny.
I dont think anyone soon will be able to top Colbert's however.
anyone that makes their whole paycheck from stand-up is funny.
that's all there is to it.
Andy Kaufman had a great take on this....
His theory was that when people pay $$$ to go to a Comedy Show they want to laugh...they EXPECT to laugh...so making them laugh is pretty easy....
But he said for a comedian to take a crowd that WANTS to laugh and get every last one of them to HATE you...to want to KILL you...now THAT takes talent.....hence his Tony Clifton character which was pure genius.
Patton Oswalt should be up there as well. His routine about the failure bowl was great. Actually, all of his routines are good.
I love Patton Oswalt. The bit he does about the steakhouse with all of the insane food (a whole, deep fried pumpkin filled with fried scallops!) makes me laugh every time.
I also ride for Mike Birbiglia, Brian Posehn, David Cross, Dana Gould...
that whole Tough Crowd crew are really good: Giraldo hits me prefectly every time; I saw dumbass Vos KILLIT once; even asshole Nick DiPaolo was amazing when I saw him.
Dudes that are saying exactly what they want: that's the whole point.
Dane Cook is just not funny. He spazzes out and shit, but he doesn't make any hilarious observations or tell any hilarious stories. He just talks about really common shit and delivers it in his annoyingly over-the-top drunken frat boy manner.
Garbage. I have no idea how he got this far.
Russell Peters, Chris Rock, Dave Chappelle. These dudes kill it.
srsly these people are funnier than anyone you will ever meet, know, or be: larry the cable guy gallagher carrot top dane cook probably mo'nique jay leno foxworthy mensteala
I work with a young dude who was going on about Dane Cook...I said he wasn't the least bit funny so he made me go to Youtube and watch some routine of his about the Kool-Aid Man....even less funny than I had thought...then I found this.....now THIS is funny!!
see: I have him in the Funny Song Guy category...I think he does more, but that's where I saw him first.
...and I don't like Funny Song Guys.
Much like people (perhaps in this thread) get super-purist with their comedy acceptance levels, I draw lines with funny songs. I've convinced myself that music is unfuckwittable, and while you can be funny IN your songs, you cannot use songs to merely be funny. Those are my rules.
so, for me: Flight of Conchords Paul Barman Weird Al--these are my Dane Cooks. I will fight to the death...for no reason...but, still... hate that shit.

You have appallingly bad taste in comedians.
i think duke is trying to say that because those dudes make a living being a comedian, they're funny but I dont buy that shit. Yeah, they're funny to some people but here, where we decide taste, they suck.

huh?
My Current Favorites: Louis CK (by a longshot) Greg Giraldo "Birbiglia." Todd Barry
all the bald white dudes pretty much.
...
the list above: I probably wouldn't pay to watch any of their acts. I used that amazing list to show just how much I believe any "pro" comedians are, by default, funny.
Even that David Cross quote about Dane Cook: he stops short of saying that dude isn't funny... Not in his definition of "good" funny--but I bet he'd have to admit that these are funny people.
Comments
that's all there is to it.
even the woman comics, the funny-to-women comics, and the rip-off artists...they're all funny, unfortunately.
funny enough? I dunno. Dane Cook's made me laugh...but his joke thievery mitigates that...
very interesting LOL

but, as you said: people want to laugh at a comedy show.
seems to be a disconnect (as with a lot of kaufman's life) there: if I show up for "funny" and I get "talented"...
I'd rather see a sorta funny comedian than The Most Talented Typist or whatever...if I'm paying for comedy...

NOT. FUNNY.
